How to Import Spare Parts from China to Nigeria

To import spare parts from China to Nigeria, identify the exact replacement, obtain comparable supplier quotations, test a sample, confirm the import requirements and calculate the cost of getting usable stock to your Nigerian destination. Buying from a photograph alone can leave you with parts that arrive cheaply but cannot be fitted or sold.

This guide covers car, appliance, generator and equipment parts. The process is similar, but the information needed to confirm compatibility differs. A Changan vehicle component needs a different buying file from an inverter AC board.

Before requesting a price, prepare five things: the equipment model, original part number, clear photographs, required quantity and delivery city. For car parts, add the vehicle identification number where the supplier needs it for a catalogue lookup.

Which spare parts are worth importing for your business? #

Begin with demand you can document. Speak to the technicians, workshops or shops you intend to supply and record the parts they failed to obtain, the price they could accept and how often the request repeats.

A practical starting exercise is to record enquiries over several weeks. For each one, note the equipment model, part number, quantity, buyer and whether the customer purchased elsewhere. Repeated enquiries for the same identifiable component are more useful than general requests for “AC parts”.

Compare these categories before choosing your first shipment:

Category What to establish before buying Main stock risk
Car and motorcycle parts Vehicle model, year, engine or trim details, VIN/catalogue fitment and part number A similar part fits a different vehicle variant
AC and refrigeration parts Equipment model, board revision or component ratings, connectors and supported application Electronics look alike but use different control logic
Generator parts Generator and engine model, original component code and electrical or mechanical specification A seller matches nominal size rather than the exact application
Solar and inverter parts Equipment model, board or accessory version, firmware and connection requirements A replacement needs programming or manufacturer support
Machinery parts Machine model, drawings, dimensions, material and operating conditions Dimensions match but material or performance does not

These are categories to investigate, not a claim that each one has proven high demand in Nigeria.

For a Port Harcourt repair business, five components already requested by technicians may be a better trial than fifty unrelated parts. For a Lagos car-parts retailer, a clearly defined vehicle range helps organise fitment records and customer enquiries.

Small size is only one consideration. A lightweight board with frequent compatibility disputes can be less attractive than a heavier part with reliable repeat demand.

Where can you buy spare parts in China? #

You can approach manufacturers, specialist distributors, trading companies or marketplace sellers. Choose the route around your order rather than assuming a factory always gives the best complete offer.

1688: Useful for investigating domestic supplier listings, provided you can handle Chinese descriptions, purchasing arrangements and delivery within China. Examine selectable variants and quantity tiers before recording a price.

Alibaba: Useful for requesting export quotations and discussing samples, documents and written order terms. Check the specific supplier and transaction rather than relying only on a badge.

Specialist distributor: May be suitable for branded components or a mixed list of model-specific parts. Establish the source, condition and traceability of every line.

Manufacturer: May suit repeat quantities or custom parts, but ask whether it actually makes the requested model, what its minimum order is and whether it supports small sample orders.

Our 1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao comparison explains the platform differences. If several suppliers are involved, the China sourcing agent guide helps you decide what coordination you need.

Compare three quotations where practical. Send the same specification to each supplier, then compare the exact part, condition, quantity, testing, packing and delivery responsibilities.

What should you search on 1688? #

Start with the original part number. Search it alone, then combine it with the equipment model or a Chinese product description. If you have a clear photograph, use 1688 image search to identify candidates.

These Chinese terms can help narrow the search:

What you are researching Chinese search term
Car parts 汽车配件
Motorcycle parts 摩托车配件
Air-conditioner parts 空调配件
Inverter AC main board 变频空调主板
Refrigerator parts 冰箱配件
Generator parts 发电机配件
Inverter parts 逆变器配件
Temperature sensor 温度传感器

These are search starting points. Add your model or component code; a broad search does not establish compatibility.

For example, searching “变频空调主板 + [original board number]” is more specific than searching only “AC board”. If a listing shows several board options, save the selected option and ask the seller to confirm what that option includes.

Read whether the displayed price covers a full assembly, a bare board, one accessory or a quantity tier. Keep the listing link and quotation together so the offer can be traced later.

How do you confirm that a replacement will fit? #

Build a buying file before you import spare parts from China to Nigeria. For each item, record the original label, dimensions, connection arrangement and required condition.

For car parts: Supply the vehicle model, year, engine or trim where relevant, VIN and original part number. Ask the seller to identify the catalogue reference used for its fitment claim. A VIN is useful for lookup, but the result still needs to match the actual component and any relevant revisions.

For AC boards and electronics: Photograph both sides, labels and connectors. Record the full equipment model and board revision. Ask whether the board is supplied programmed, whether it needs pairing and what instructions or tools are required.

For motors and mechanical parts: Record the applicable voltage, frequency, speed, dimensions, mounting, shaft and connector details. For wear parts, establish material and operating requirements as well as measurements.

Manufacturer documentation can be more useful than a seller’s “fits all models” statement. Danfoss’s compressor catalogue, for example, distinguishes refrigerant, application and voltage/frequency characteristics.

Have a qualified technician review any proposed substitute. If the seller cannot explain what differs from the original part, keep it outside the approved order.

What do genuine, OEM, aftermarket and refurbished mean? #

Ask the seller to describe the exact goods and support the description with evidence. Marketplace labels are not enough.

Do not sell an aftermarket board as a genuine branded replacement. Do not describe a used component as new because it has been cleaned or repacked.

Record the agreed condition on the quotation, order and final invoice. Also confirm that the intended condition is acceptable for import before paying.

How do you check a supplier and test a sample? #

Request the registered Chinese company name, business licence, seller’s address and explanation of the source of the parts. Compare that identity with the quotation and payment recipient.

Watch for unexplained company changes, refusal to identify the chosen variant, copied product photographs and pressure to pay before compatibility is discussed. Our Chinese supplier scams guide covers further checks, and you can request a supplier verification check.

Agree a sample plan before a larger order:

  1. Obtain the exact model and revision being offered.
  2. Record the sample’s labels and condition on arrival.
  3. Have it fitted or assessed by a qualified technician on appropriate equipment.
  4. Test the relevant functions under agreed conditions.
  5. Record faults, configuration requirements and the outcome.
  6. Confirm that bulk goods must match the approved specification.

Use our samples from China guide to organise the trial. Agree in writing what happens if the sample is unsuitable.

For bulk orders, quality inspection in China should cover the agreed part numbers, quantities, condition, labels and packing. Specialist functional testing needs a separate scope and suitable equipment.

A warehouse photograph showing fifty boards confirms little about whether each board works. For a small, valuable batch, consider individual functional testing where practical, and agree who performs it and what record you receive.

Which documents, approvals and duty charges apply? #

There is no single “spare-parts duty rate” that covers every component. The exact product, classification and import circumstances determine the assessment.

Give your licensed clearing agent a line-by-line list of the goods, functions, materials, condition and values. Ask for the proposed Nigerian classification and written cost breakdown. Use the Nigeria Customs tariff resources when checking the assessment with the agent.

Establish the applicable Form M, PAAR and other document requirements early. Nigeria’s official trade portal identifies these within its spare-parts import procedures; confirm the current workflow with your bank and agent.

SON’s import-permit guidance distinguishes eligible manufacturing and other permitted imports from commercial stock for sale and distribution. Do not assume a manufacturer’s route applies to your resale business. Review our SONCAP requirements guide.

Prepare an accurate commercial invoice with separate descriptions and values. Keep it consistent with the packing records and shipment contents.

A freight quotation described as “all-inclusive” still needs an explanation of the import arrangement, covered charges and available shipment records. Do not approve false descriptions or reduced invoice values to make the quotation appear cheaper.

Should you ship spare parts by air or sea? #

Compare the urgency, packed measurements, shipment value and complete delivery cost.

Air: Consider it for a small trial, urgent repair or relatively light parts where the selling margin supports the quote. Ask how chargeable weight is calculated, whether there is a minimum charge and where the service ends.

Sea or groupage: Consider it for heavier or larger stock when the quoted cost and lead time suit the business. Ask about minimum volume, destination charges, clearing and onward delivery.

A mixed shipment: Consolidation can reduce separate dispatches, but each parcel still needs identification. Tell the warehouse which supplier, part numbers and quantities belong in each carton.

Use our 1688 shipping guide for receiving and consolidation, and the China-to-Nigeria shipping service page to discuss the actual route.

Request anti-static protection where appropriate, protection for exposed connectors and packing suitable for heavier components. Disclose batteries, oils, liquids or other contents that affect acceptance.

Ask for separate estimates for supplier preparation, China delivery, international movement, clearance and Nigerian delivery. An advertised transit time is not necessarily the complete order-to-shop time.

How much does it cost to import spare parts? #

The answer needs a supplier quotation and a shipment quotation. Unit price alone does not reveal whether the order is profitable.

Include goods, payment conversion and transfer costs, China delivery, buying fees, testing, packing, freight, insurance where applicable, import charges, clearance and delivery to your business. Avoid counting a charge twice if it is already included in another price.

Worked example: 50 replacement control boards. These figures are invented for arithmetic only; they are not ChinaBridge prices, current freight rates or a Customs assessment.

Cost category Illustrative amount
Goods, converted to naira ₦450,000
China domestic delivery ₦25,000
Buying and payment service charges ₦25,000
Sample/testing allocation ₦35,000
Packing and international freight ₦80,000
Documentation, import charges and clearance ₦65,000
Nigerian delivery ₦20,000
Total batch cost ₦700,000

The planned cost is ₦700,000 ÷ 50 = ₦14,000 per board.

If two boards cannot be sold and you recover nothing for them, allocate that cost across 48 usable boards: ₦700,000 ÷ 48 = about ₦14,583 each.

If you then budget ₦1,000 for support/returns and ₦1,000 for selling overhead per usable unit, your planning cost becomes about ₦16,583.

For an illustrative 25% margin on sales after those allowances, divide by 0.75: ₦16,583 ÷ 0.75 = about ₦22,111. Multiplying cost by 1.25 gives a 25% markup, which is a different calculation.

Check whether customers will pay that amount. If the realistic selling price is lower, renegotiate, change the shipment or leave the order. Our landed cost guide explains the broader calculation.

What message should you send to a supplier? #

A useful enquiry identifies the part and asks for a complete comparable offer. Replace the brackets before sending:

Hello. We are sourcing [part description] for delivery to Nigeria.

Equipment/vehicle model: [full model and relevant year or version].

Original part number: [number].

Revision or other identifying details: [details].

Required condition: [new genuine / new aftermarket / other accurately stated condition].

Trial quantity: [quantity].

Possible repeat quantity: [quantity, if known].

Please check the attached labels and photographs and confirm compatibility with this exact equipment. Identify any differences or substitutions.

Please quote the selected part, sample cost, minimum order, available stock or production time, and delivery to our China receiving address.

Also confirm programming or pairing requirements, included accessories, test records, packaging, packed weight and dimensions.

Please provide your registered company name and explain the source of the goods. Confirm your procedure for wrong parts, defective arrivals and shortages, including who pays return freight.

Please do not substitute another model or revision without our written approval.

Save the reply with the listing and specification. For an Alibaba transaction, review our Trade Assurance guide and the terms of the specific order.

What should you check before paying and selling? #

Before you import spare parts from China to Nigeria, confirm that the quotation, approved sample, payment recipient and shipment instructions describe the same order. Use our supplier payment guide when choosing and checking the payment arrangement.

Agree how claims work. Record the evidence needed for a wrong revision, a faulty arrival or a missing unit, the notification deadline and who pays parts, labour or return freight.

Label stock by part number and revision. Link purchase and test records to the units sold. Ask customers for the equipment details needed to check fitment before dispatching a replacement.

If a board fails during installation, do not automatically assume the imported part is faulty. Have a qualified technician document the equipment diagnosis, installation and failure so the claim can be assessed.

ChinaBridge can help coordinate supplier checks, sample purchases, inspection and shipping. Send the equipment model, part number, clear photographs, quantity and delivery city. Request a written quotation separating ChinaBridge service fees from supplier, testing, freight and import costs.

Questions Nigerian buyers ask about spare-parts imports #

Can I start with a small quantity? #

Ask for a sample or mixed trial order. Minimum quantities depend on the supplier and part; one seller’s policy does not establish the market minimum. Compare the total trial cost before committing.

Can one board fit several AC or inverter models? #

Possibly, but obtain a documented compatibility list and check revisions, software and connections. A claim that a board is “universal” needs explanation and testing.

Are parts bought on 1688 automatically cheaper? #

Compare the same part, condition and delivered cost. A low displayed price may cover another variant or exclude accessories, testing, payment service charges and freight.

Can a supplier guarantee that a car part fits? #

Request a documented catalogue match using the relevant vehicle information and original part number. Agree the remedy for an incorrect supplier-confirmed match. A sales assurance is not a substitute for those records.

How long will the parts take to reach Nigeria? #

Obtain separate preparation and transport estimates for the actual order. Stock availability, dispatch schedules, inspection, clearance and onward delivery all affect the final date.

Which spare part gives the highest profit? #

There is no reliable answer without your local demand and cost records. Compare usable-unit landed cost, realistic selling price, returns and the time it takes to sell the stock.
