Commercial Invoice for China Imports to Nigeria

A commercial invoice for China imports to Nigeria records the goods sold, their prices and the parties involved in the shipment.

You may have paid your supplier correctly and arranged freight, but a vague description, wrong quantity or missing charge can still create questions when the shipment documents are checked.

A common mistake is treating the invoice as a payment reminder. The amount left to pay is different from the total value of the goods being shipped.

Request the draft invoice before dispatch, while the supplier can still correct it.

Use this guide to check the details and compare them with your order, packing list and payment records.

What is a commercial invoice and who issues it? #

The seller or exporter normally issues the commercial invoice. It describes the transaction associated with the goods being shipped.

It serves a different purpose from these documents:

Compare the final invoice with your purchase order for a Chinese supplier and the accepted quotation.

Our proforma invoice guide explains what to check at the quotation stage.

If a trading company sells you goods made by another factory, record the actual seller and relevant exporter correctly. Ask your forwarder to clarify any difference between those parties.

What should a China-to-Nigeria commercial invoice contain? #

Start with a clear, readable document that identifies the transaction.

Check for:

Confirm any required identifiers, signature, stamp or document format with your clearing agent, forwarder and bank where applicable.

DHL's international shipping paperwork guide explains the core information used for customs declarations.

Replace descriptions such as "accessories" or "general goods" with the actual products.

For example, "canvas tote bags, model BAG-01" is more useful than "bags." If several products have different materials or functions, give them separate lines.

Verify the manufacturing origin. Dispatch from a Chinese warehouse does not by itself establish Chinese origin.

Ask your Nigerian clearing agent to check any HS code suggested by the supplier against the exact product.

A simple commercial invoice example for Nigerian buyers #

Payment record

Add the actual delivery terms, named receiving point and relevant shipment references. International freight, Nigerian clearance and onward delivery are outside this example's supplier invoice.

The packing list for the same order records 60 bags across three cartons.

The invoice total is not automatically the complete customs value or the final cost of bringing the goods into Nigeria.

Should the invoice show the full value or only the balance? #

The invoice should show the transaction value of the goods being shipped. Record payments separately so the supplier and buyer can see what remains outstanding.

In the example, the USD 96 deposit does not replace the USD 300 goods value or the USD 320 invoice total. The USD 224 balance is the unpaid portion of that total.

If the balance has already been paid, update the payment status while keeping the goods and charges visible.

Our supplier deposit guide explains how to agree payment stages.

Keep receipts and transfer references alongside the invoice. Read how to pay a Chinese supplier from Nigeria when confirming the payment arrangement.

For a genuine discount, retain the supplier's written agreement and show how it affects the price.

Do not request a falsely reduced invoice to lower clearance charges. Your documents should support the real transaction.

How do you match the invoice with the actual shipment? #

Check three records together: the accepted order, commercial invoice and final packing list.

The descriptions, models and quantities should describe the same goods. The carton count and shipping marks should connect the documents to the packages your warehouse receives.

A packing list explains the contents of the cartons. It does not replace the invoice's prices and transaction details.

If only 40 of an ordered 60 bags are being shipped, ask the supplier to prepare documents for that partial shipment and identify the order reference. Keep a separate record of the remaining 20 bags.

Confirm how any deposit and delivery charge are allocated instead of copying the full order total into every shipment invoice.

For orders from several suppliers, preserve the individual seller invoices and link each one to the relevant cartons. Our guide to combining orders from China to Nigeria explains the warehouse checks.

Arrange corrections with the issuer and share the revised version with everyone using the documents. Identify which earlier version it replaces.

How is the invoice used for Customs valuation in Nigeria? #

Nigeria Customs explains that customs value normally starts with the price actually paid or payable, with specified additions where applicable.

These can include transport to the Nigerian place of importation, handling and insurance. Applicable additions need supporting figures and should not be counted twice when already included.

See the official Nigeria Customs valuation guide.

For the example order, USD 320 excludes international freight and other relevant charges. Hand the invoice and separate cost records to your clearing agent so the declaration can be prepared correctly.

Customs can query the accuracy of declared values and supporting documents. Retain the order, invoice, payment evidence and any genuine discount agreement.

Our customs duty calculation guide explains why the invoice total alone does not tell you the duty payable.

For business planning, use the landed cost guide to include the costs of getting the goods to your Nigerian destination.
