China sourcing agent in Nigeria: what they do and charge
Whether a Nigerian buyer needs a China sourcing agent: what an agent does, commissions from 3 to 10 percent, the hidden markup to watch, and a test for any agent.

A China sourcing agent for Nigerian importers is someone on the ground in China who helps you find suppliers, negotiate prices, buy goods, inspect products, consolidate orders and prepare them for shipping to Nigeria.
For some orders, you do not need one.
For others, especially when buying from 1688, Chinese factories or several suppliers at once, having someone in China can save you from expensive mistakes.
The important question is not simply whether an agent can find a cheap supplier.
It is whether you can see what the factory actually charged, what the agent charged and what you are getting for the money.
This guide explains what a China sourcing agent does, typical sourcing fees, when you need one and the warning signs Nigerian importers should watch for.
Do you need a China sourcing agent in Nigeria? #
Not every importer needs a sourcing agent.
You can usually source directly when:
- The product is simple and easy to specify
- You have found suitable suppliers on Alibaba
- The supplier accepts an eligible Trade Assurance order
- Your order is relatively small
- You can compare quotations yourself
- You understand product specifications
- You can arrange inspection and shipping independently
A sourcing agent becomes more useful when:
- You want to buy from 1688 from Nigeria
- The Chinese seller does not accept international payment
- You need somebody to pay the supplier in yuan
- You are buying from several suppliers
- You need goods consolidated in one Chinese warehouse
- You need factory verification
- You are ordering customised products
- Your order value is large
- Quality problems would cost you significant money
- You need production follow-up
- You want someone to negotiate directly with Chinese suppliers
- Your goods require additional compliance documents before entering Nigeria
If you are still deciding where to buy, our 1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao guide explains the differences between the three platforms and which one suits different types of Nigerian importers.
The larger or more complicated the order becomes, the more valuable proper sourcing, inspection and supplier verification can be.
What does a China sourcing agent charge? #
China sourcing agent fees vary according to the value of the order and the amount of work involved.
A common commission range is roughly 3% to 10% of the goods value.
For straightforward or high-value orders, the percentage may be lower.
For smaller, customised or complicated sourcing projects, the percentage may be higher.
Around 3% to 5% #
This may be possible for larger or repeat orders where the supplier is already known and the agent mainly handles purchasing, communication and order follow-up.
Around 5% to 8% #
This is more common for fuller sourcing services involving:
- Supplier search
- Quotation comparison
- Negotiation
- Order monitoring
- Inspection coordination
- Consolidation
Up to around 10% #
This may apply to smaller orders or projects requiring more supplier research, product development, samples, inspections or detailed coordination.
Some sourcing companies charge a fixed fee instead of a percentage.
Neither system is automatically better.
What matters is knowing exactly:
- What percentage is being charged
- What value the percentage is calculated from
- Which services are included
- Which services cost extra
- Whether the factory quotation is disclosed
A cheap-looking sourcing fee can become expensive if other costs are hidden inside the product price.
Be careful with “free” China sourcing agents #
A sourcing company can legitimately earn money in different ways.
The problem starts when you do not know how it is being paid.
An agent advertising zero commission or free sourcing may receive money from the supplier, add a margin to the factory price or earn through other charges.
That does not automatically mean the service is fraudulent.
But you should know where the money comes from.
For example, imagine a factory quotes:
¥50 per unit
but the buyer receives a quotation showing:
¥58 per unit
The visible sourcing fee may be zero, but the real cost is inside the product price.
This becomes particularly expensive when you are buying thousands of units.
The same issue can happen when using interpreters or buying at trade fairs. Our Canton Fair interpreter guide explains why buyers should understand exactly who an interpreter or sourcing representative is working for.
Ask for a clear breakdown before paying.
What does a China sourcing agent actually do? #
A full-service sourcing agent should do considerably more than send you product pictures.
Find suppliers #
The agent searches for manufacturers and wholesalers that match your:
- Product specification
- Quantity
- Target price
- Quality requirement
- Packaging requirement
- Delivery deadline
This may include suppliers on 1688, Alibaba, Chinese wholesale markets or direct factories.
Compare quotations #
The cheapest supplier is not automatically the best supplier.
A proper comparison should consider:
- Unit price
- Minimum order quantity
- Material
- Product specification
- Packaging
- Production time
- Sample quality
- Payment terms
- Factory capability
Two products that look identical in a photograph can have completely different specifications.
Negotiate minimum order quantity #
Chinese suppliers often quote based on MOQ, especially when branding or custom production is involved.
An experienced agent may be able to negotiate a lower starting quantity, particularly when dealing directly with the manufacturer.
Our China MOQ guide explains how minimum order quantities work and what Nigerian buyers can realistically negotiate.
Verify the supplier #
Before sending a large deposit, the agent should establish who you are actually paying.
Depending on the size and risk of the order, verification can include checking:
- Chinese business registration
- Company name
- Factory address
- Bank account information
- Production capability
- Export experience
- Product certificates
- Factory photographs or video
- Physical factory inspection
For larger orders, online verification alone may not be enough.
Negotiate the price #
Chinese suppliers often quote according to quantity, specification, packaging and payment terms.
A sourcing agent can negotiate:
- Unit price
- MOQ
- Packaging cost
- Sample cost
- Production time
- Deposit
- Replacement terms
- Spare units
- Custom branding
The goal should not simply be the lowest possible price.
It should be the best acceptable combination of price, specification and reliability.
Arrange samples #
For customised or unfamiliar products, buying a sample before production can prevent a costly mistake.
An agent can receive several samples in China, compare them and send the selected ones to Nigeria when necessary.
This is particularly useful when you are comparing several factories.
Follow production #
Paying a deposit should not be the last time anybody checks the order until completion.
A sourcing agent should follow production and confirm important stages such as:
- Deposit received
- Raw materials prepared
- Production started
- Production progress
- Packaging completed
- Goods ready for inspection
- Shipment ready
This allows problems to be identified before your expected shipping date.
Inspect the goods #
Inspection is one of the biggest reasons to have somebody physically in China.
Depending on the product, checks may include:
- Quantity
- Size
- Colour
- Material
- Branding
- Packaging
- Measurements
- Basic functionality
- Visible defects
- Carton count
- Shipping marks
For technical, regulated or high-value products, a specialist third-party inspection or laboratory test may still be necessary.
A few photographs are not the same thing as a proper inspection.
Consolidate goods from different suppliers #
This is especially useful for Nigerian traders buying different products from several factories.
Instead of every supplier shipping separately, the products can be sent to one warehouse in China.
The warehouse can then:
- Receive the goods
- Count the cartons
- Check obvious discrepancies
- Repack where necessary
- Measure the shipment
- Consolidate everything
- Prepare it for air or sea freight
Consolidation can make shipping easier and reduce unnecessary separate shipments.
If you are trying to understand the full transport process after sourcing, see our shipping from China to Nigeria guide.
Buying from 1688 through a sourcing agent #
One of the biggest reasons Nigerians search for China sourcing agents is 1688.
1688 is primarily built for the Chinese domestic market.
That means some sellers may:
- Communicate mainly in Chinese
- Expect payment in yuan
- Deliver only to Chinese addresses
- Have little experience dealing directly with overseas buyers
A sourcing agent can act as the China-side buyer.
Typically, you send the product link and required quantity.
The agent confirms the item with the supplier, verifies important specifications, makes the domestic payment, receives the goods at a Chinese warehouse and prepares them for shipment to Nigeria.
But do not assume every 1688 price is automatically cheaper after all costs.
Calculate:
Product cost + China delivery + sourcing fee + inspection + warehouse charges + international shipping + Nigerian import costs
before comparing it with another supplier.
For a deeper comparison, see our 1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao guide.
What about Alibaba? #
Alibaba is easier for many Nigerians to use directly because it is designed for international trade.
If your product is straightforward and you find an appropriate supplier, you may not need a sourcing agent.
Alibaba's Verified Supplier programme provides additional third-party assessment information about participating suppliers.
Trade Assurance can also provide order protection for eligible transactions when the order and payment are handled according to Alibaba's requirements.
Still, neither badge should replace your own checks.
For a large order, confirm:
- Exact specifications
- Sample approval
- Company details
- Payment details
- Inspection requirements
- Delivery terms
before production begins.
China sourcing agents and SONCAP #
If you are importing SONCAP-regulated goods into Nigeria, compliance should be considered before the goods leave China.
SONCAP is Nigeria's pre-shipment conformity assessment programme for regulated imported products.
Depending on the product and certification route, conformity procedures can involve documentation, inspection, testing and other checks before shipment.
Do not buy a container first and start asking whether the product can meet Nigerian requirements afterwards.
Before placing a regulated order, confirm:
- Correct HS code
- Whether the product is SONCAP regulated
- Applicable Nigerian standard
- Required Product Certificate
- Testing requirements
- Certificate requirements
- Whether the manufacturer can supply the necessary technical documents
This is particularly important for products such as certain electrical goods, machinery, building materials and other regulated items.
A sourcing agent can coordinate with the supplier, but Nigerian regulatory compliance should never be treated as a casual paperwork exercise.
China sourcing agent vs shipping agent #
These jobs are related, but they are not the same.
A sourcing agent helps you buy the goods.
A shipping agent or freight forwarder helps move the goods.
Your sourcing agent may handle:
- Supplier search
- Price negotiation
- Purchasing
- Samples
- Production monitoring
- Inspection
- China warehousing
- Consolidation
Your freight provider may handle:
- Air freight
- Sea freight
- Container booking
- Export transport
- Shipping documentation
- Freight coordination
Some companies provide both services.
Others specialise in only one.
Our shipping companies from China to Nigeria guide explains what to compare before choosing a freight company.
Where Form M enters the process #
For qualifying Nigerian imports, sourcing the goods in China is only one part of the transaction.
The Nigerian side can involve your bank, import documentation and the Form M process.
That is why your product description, invoice and other commercial documents should be prepared correctly from the beginning.
If you are unfamiliar with the process, read our Form M Nigeria import guide.
You can also read our proforma invoice guide if you need to understand what should appear on the supplier's quotation before you proceed with payment or banking documentation.
What a good China sourcing agent should provide #
A reliable sourcing process should give you visibility.
You should be able to see important information such as:
- Supplier name
- Product specification
- Supplier quotation
- Agent's service fee
- Payment record
- Sample photographs
- Production updates
- Inspection evidence
- Warehouse receipt
- Shipping information
You should know what you are buying, who is supplying it and what each major charge represents.
Red flags when choosing a China sourcing agent #
Be careful when an agent:
- Refuses to explain how they earn money
- Will not identify the supplier
- Will not provide a quotation breakdown
- Changes exchange rates without explanation
- Pressures you to pay quickly
- Requests large payments into unrelated personal accounts
- Cannot provide a clear Chinese warehouse address
- Cannot explain its inspection process
- Avoids written specifications
- Keeps changing suppliers without explanation
- Sends only random product photographs as proof of inspection
- Becomes difficult to reach immediately after payment
One warning sign does not automatically prove fraud.
But several warning signs together are a reason to stop and verify before sending more money.
5 questions to ask any China sourcing agent #
Before giving an agent a large order, ask these five questions.
1. How exactly do you make your money? #
Ask whether the agent charges:
- A percentage
- A flat fee
- A supplier commission
- A product markup
- Warehouse charges
- Inspection charges
- Another fee
You should understand the complete payment structure.
2. Can I see the original supplier quotation? #
This helps you understand the real cost of the product and the agent's separate fee.
If the supplier must remain confidential for a specific reason, the agent should explain that clearly before you commit.
3. Where is your warehouse in China? #
Ask for the actual location used to receive customer goods.
For a significant order, independent verification is sensible.
4. Who checks the goods before shipment? #
Find out whether inspection is:
- Done by the sourcing company
- Done by the supplier
- Done by an independent inspection company
These are not equivalent.
5. What happens if the goods fail inspection? #
This question is more useful than asking whether problems ever happen.
Problems happen in international sourcing.
The important issue is the process for handling them.
Ask what happens when:
- Quantity is short
- Colour is wrong
- Packaging is damaged
- Specifications are incorrect
- Production is late
- Products fail inspection
The answer should be clear before you pay the deposit.
The test for any China sourcing agent, including us #
Do not judge a sourcing company only from its website or social media.
Test it.
Ask:
- How are you paid?
- Will you show me the supplier's original quotation?
- Where is your warehouse in China?
- Who inspects the goods?
- What happens when an order goes wrong?
You can verify ChinaBridge Global here and apply the same questions to us that you would apply to any other sourcing company.
A sourcing company should be willing to explain its process before you send money.
Should you use a sourcing agent or buy directly? #
Use this simple rule.
Buy directly when the transaction is simple and you can control the risk yourself.
Consider a sourcing agent when the transaction becomes complicated enough that having somebody physically in China gives you meaningful protection or saves you significant time.
For example:
Small Alibaba order
You may be able to handle it yourself.
Several 1688 suppliers
An agent can make purchasing and consolidation much easier.
Custom product
Supplier verification, samples and production monitoring become more important.
Large commercial order
Inspection before shipment becomes much more valuable.
Regulated product entering Nigeria
Compliance should be checked before production and shipment.
The agent should earn their fee by reducing risk, improving visibility and handling work you would otherwise struggle to manage from Nigeria.
Before you send money #
For Nigerian importers, the safest sourcing process starts before the first payment.
Know:
- What you are buying
- The exact specification
- Who manufactured it
- Who you are paying
- How the agent is paid
- What inspection will be done
- What happens if the goods fail inspection
- Where the goods will be received in China
- How they will be shipped to Nigeria
- Whether the product has Nigerian import requirements
A China sourcing agent should make your transaction more transparent, not less.
If the agent controls the supplier, quotation, payment, inspection and shipping but will not show you what is happening, you are not reducing your risk.
You are simply moving the risk to somebody you cannot see.
ChinaBridge Global helps Nigerian buyers source, verify, purchase, inspect and consolidate goods in China.
Before committing to any sourcing service—including ours—ask for the fee structure, supplier information, inspection process and China warehouse details so you know exactly how your order will be handled.
Start here, it takes about two minutes
