What the fair is, and why it is worth the trip
The Canton Fair runs twice a year at the Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou, Guangzhou, at 382 Yuejiang Zhong Road, Haizhu District. Thousands of exhibitors bring samples, quote prices and negotiate minimum order quantities in person. For a Nigerian buyer, it is the difference between ordering from a website and looking a supplier in the face before you commit several million naira.
The three phases are really three different fairs
This is the single most important thing on this page. Between phases the booths change completely. Come in the wrong week and the suppliers you travelled for are simply not there.
- Phase 1 is electronics, machinery, hardware, building materials, vehicles and new energy. Phone accessories for Computer Village, solar and inverters, auto parts for Ladipo and Nnewi, building materials for Orile and Coker.
- Phase 2 is home goods, kitchenware, furniture, gifts, toys and personal care. General merchandise for Trade Fair and Onitsha Main Market, hair and beauty for Balogun.
- Phase 3 is textiles, garments, shoes, bags, food and health products. Fashion for Balogun and Aba, children's wear, food and health lines.
140th Canton Fair, Autumn 2026
Phase 1: 15 to 19 October. Phase 2: 23 to 27 October. Phase 3: 31 October to 4 November.
Break days: 20 to 22 October and 28 to 30 October.
The 141st session, Spring 2027, is expected in April and May 2027. Treat that as unconfirmed until the organiser publishes it, and check the dates yourself before booking anything.
Coming this October?
We take a Nigerian group to this session: visa file prepared, buyer badge, hotel near Pazhou, interpreters in the halls, and a factory visit day on the break days. Twenty five places, and applications close 30 September.
Apply for the October delegationNothing payable to apply. A person replies on WhatsApp, usually the same working day.
The break days are the part most buyers waste
Between phases the halls are closed and most visitors sit in their hotels. Those are the best days of the whole trip. Foshan for furniture and ceramics, Dongguan for electronics and hardware, Shenzhen for tech and components, all reachable by road or train from Guangzhou.
A factory visit tells you what a booth cannot: whether the company that quoted you actually manufactures, or is a trading office with a good display. It is also when you negotiate properly, because the pressure of the fair floor is gone and there is time to ask about capacity, quality control and payment terms.
Being fair about it, a factory visit is not the same as a full supplier check. Seeing a busy floor tells you production exists. It does not confirm the company's registration, its trading history, or that the goods shipped will match the sample. Treat the visit as one piece of evidence, not the whole answer.
The invitation letter
Your visa file needs an invitation. For the fair it comes from the organiser and confirms the dates, the venue and your status as a registered buyer. You register as an overseas buyer, get your badge, and request the letter. None of it is difficult, but people leave it late and then rush, and rushing is what causes refusals.
We handle this with you as part of trip planning. We do not sell invitation letters on their own.
Getting there from Lagos
There is normally no direct flight to Guangzhou. You stop once, most often in Addis Ababa, Cairo, Doha, Istanbul or Nairobi, and door to door it usually runs somewhere between 16 and 22 hours depending on the layover.
October and April are fair season. Fares climb, and the good connections sell out first. Booking early is not a sales line, it is simply cheaper. Aim to land a day or two before your phase opens. Negotiating prices while jet lagged is how buyers make expensive mistakes on day one.
Where to stay
Pazhou is the district around the complex, on the south side of the Pearl River. Hotels near the halls fill early during fair weeks and prices rise accordingly. The metro reaches the complex, so a hotel near a station on that line is often better value than paying for the one across the road.
Sharing a room with another Nigerian buyer is common and sensible if you are watching costs. It also gives you somebody to compare notes with at the end of each day, which is worth more than most people expect.
Language, and why an interpreter changes the trip
Many exhibitors speak some English, rarely enough for real negotiation. Without help, three days of meetings turn into a pile of business cards you cannot match to prices you half remember.
An interpreter walking the halls with you, writing down the price, the minimum order quantity, what sample was promised and on what terms, is what turns those three days into a comparison you can act on from Lagos.
Money on the ground
China runs largely on phone payments now and cash is rare. This needs setting up before you fly, not discovering on arrival. For your own spending money, your bank's travel allowance process is the legal route and it takes time, so ask them early.
For buying, you should not need to hunt for dollars at all. Your costs are quoted in naira and paid to a registered Nigerian company. If anyone ever asks you to pay into a personal account, in dollars, or into an account in China, that person is not us.
Working the halls without losing control
Write your brief before you fly. For each product: the specification, the quantity you actually want, the packaging, any Nigerian compliance requirement, when you need it to arrive, and the questions every supplier must answer. If you are buying phone accessories, that means compatibility, warranty handling and replacement terms. If you are buying auto parts, it means exact models and part references. Walking in without this is how three days turn into vague memories.
Then hold the discipline on the floor. Do not place a serious order at the first attractive booth. Record the same details for every supplier you meet, so you are comparing like with like: company name, whether they manufacture or trade, minimum order quantity, sample policy, production time, and what documents they can provide. Ask for a written quotation that states the specification, quantity, packaging, delivery terms and how long the price holds.
Label samples the moment you collect them. An unlabelled sample two days later is just an object you cannot trace to a price.
What a well-run trip looks like
- Before you leave: a buying plan, fair registration and badge, the invitation letter, the visa file, flights, a hotel near Pazhou, and a shortlist of booths matched to what you sell
- At the fair: someone meets you at the airport, an interpreter beside you at every meeting, prices and terms recorded as you go
- Break days: factory visits in Foshan, Dongguan or Shenzhen, and serious negotiation
- After: supplier checks, samples you approve, an order, inspection before anything ships, then freight to Lagos
Start here, it takes two minutes
Tell us three things and a person from the desk replies on WhatsApp, usually the same working day. Nothing is payable to register, and nothing is due until you have agreed a plan in writing.
