Seasonal Import Planning for Nigerian Sellers

Seasonal import planning starts with the date your customers need the goods, then works backwards through receiving, shipping, inspection and production.

For a Nigerian seller, stock that arrives after customers have finished buying can become a cash problem even when the purchase price looks attractive.

Christmas merchandise, school supplies and event-related products have different buying windows. Your customers may purchase weeks before the occasion itself. Build your plan around their buying behaviour rather than the public celebration date.

This guide provides a reusable worksheet. All quantities, dates and costs in the examples are fictional planning assumptions, not shipping promises or market forecasts.

Which selling date should you plan around? #

Choose a stock-ready date: the date goods must be checked, priced and available at your selling location.

For a wholesaler, that may be before retailers begin stocking up. For a retailer, it may be before parents or event organisers complete their purchases.

Write down three separate dates:

Use your invoices, enquiry records and conversations with repeat buyers. Different schools, cities, sales channels and customer groups may follow different calendars.

Treat product ideas as candidates to investigate. Our best products to import guide can help you shortlist categories, but a category list does not establish demand for a particular design or quantity.

How do you work backwards to an order deadline? #

List every stage between approving the product and having usable stock. Include payment arrangements, production or stock preparation, inspection, corrections, China transport, export handling, international transport, applicable import processing and final delivery.

Confirm which stages overlap. Do not add overlapping periods as though they always happen consecutively, or omit a stage because someone calls the quotation door-to-door.

Here is a simplified fictional example with consecutive calendar-day allowances:

The total is 80 days. Counting backwards from 1 December gives 12 September.

That is a planning illustration, not a recommendation to order every Christmas product on 12 September. Actual routes, goods, documentation and supplier commitments differ.

An uncertainty allowance creates room in a plan; it cannot guarantee arrival. Our shipping timelines guide helps you separate transport time from the full purchasing timeline.

How much seasonal stock should you order? #

Forecast sales across the buying window, then account for usable stock and confirmed incoming goods expected before that window closes.

Keep untested enquiries separate from paid orders and repeat purchasing history. A popular video may bring attention without producing enough buyers at your intended price.

In a fictional example:

The extra twenty units are an assumption for this example, not a standard buffer.

If the supplier requires two hundred units, the minimum order exceeds the indicated requirement by eighty. Investigate a smaller order, shared purchase or different sourcing route before increasing your commitment.

Check each size, colour and model separately. A total of two hundred pieces can still leave you short of the popular variant and overstocked with another.

What should you confirm before paying the supplier? #

Confirm the exact product, quantity by variant, packaging, readiness date and inspection arrangements in writing.

Ask what the quoted readiness date means. Production completion, availability for collection and handover to a carrier are different milestones.

For customised goods, approve the sample and artwork before final production. Check spellings, dates, colours and the contents of each set. Our samples guide explains how to document an agreed reference.

Avoid treating dated packaging as a minor detail. A generic gift box may remain usable beyond one occasion; a box printed for a specific year or event may have fewer alternative buyers.

Confirm current import eligibility and product requirements before payment. Seasonal use does not remove applicable safety, certification or import obligations.

Record who will arrange each stage and who must report a delay. Request an updated plan whenever a milestone slips.

What if the goods may arrive too late? #

Recalculate the decision using the remaining selling window. Money already spent does not prove that spending more will recover it.

Ask four questions:

Here is another fictional example. Faster delivery would cost an additional ₦120,000. You estimate that eighty extra sales might be retained, each contributing ₦1,000 after the other variable costs.

That gives ₦80,000 of estimated additional contribution, leaving a ₦40,000 shortfall against the extra freight. Under those assumptions, speeding up solely to retain those sales does not cover its cost.

Different quantities or margins can change the result. Include other relevant consequences, such as agreed customer commitments, rather than relying on this calculation alone.

Use the landed cost guide to check the revised budget. Compare equivalent service scopes and avoid counting the same charge twice.

How do you control sales and leftover stock? #

Track units received, checked, reserved, sold, returned and still available. Incoming goods should not quietly become ready-to-dispatch stock in your sales messages.

Set clear order cutoffs based on your ability to fulfil. A platform accepting another order does not establish that you can deliver it before the customer’s event.

Our online selling guide covers presenting imported stock to Nigerian buyers.

Decide in advance when you will review slow sales, stop reordering or consider a promotion. Assess the actual contribution after discounts, selling costs and delivery support.

For leftovers, compare storage until the next season, selling through another channel, repackaging where appropriate or clearing the stock. Our dead stock guide examines those choices.

Use this seasonal import planning worksheet for each product:

What do Nigerian sellers commonly ask? #

Is October always too late to import Christmas stock? #

There is no universal cutoff. Compare the specific supplier’s readiness, service schedule, processing requirements and your stock-ready date. Do not treat a general transit estimate as a delivery commitment.

Check whether your customers want the exact product at your delivered selling price. Views and enquiries alone do not establish a profitable order quantity.

Can I use last year’s sales as my entire forecast? #

Use them as evidence, then consider changes in price, customer numbers, competition, product specification and the dates you actually had stock available.

Are school supplies seasonal in the same way everywhere? #

No. Confirm the relevant school calendars and when your customers purchase. Different institutions and locations can have different needs and timing.

Should I print the year on seasonal packaging? #

Only when it serves a clear purpose. Consider whether the remaining packaging would still be usable if delivery or sales fall behind plan.

Can faster shipping rescue every late order? #

No. Check remaining demand, goods eligibility, service availability and the additional cost. A faster route can still arrive too late or remove the expected margin.

What is the most important habit? #

Use seasonal import planning before paying: set the stock-ready date, verify the full timeline, size the order from evidence and decide what happens if demand or delivery changes.
