Every Nigerian citizen needs a visa to enter China, whether you are going for two days or two weeks, and whether you are visiting one factory or walking every hall at the Canton Fair. Start here, before you book anything else, because the visa decides your dates.
Which visa does a Nigerian trader apply for?
For a buying trip, supplier meetings or the Canton Fair, the category is the business visa for trade and commercial activity, usually written as M. It is not a tourist visa and it is not a work visa. Applying under the wrong category is one of the quickest ways to get a refusal, and using a tourist visa to do business can cause you trouble at entry as well.
Your file has to tell one story. If you say you are travelling to buy phone accessories, your business papers, your bank movement and your invitation should all point the same way. A dealer buying for Computer Village or Alaba should look like an electronics trader on paper. Somebody buying auto parts for Ladipo or Nnewi should look like an auto parts trader. Somebody buying fashion for Balogun or Aba should look like a clothing trader. Do not invent a purpose because it sounds more impressive. Consistency is worth more than impressiveness.
How the application works now
The process changed and a lot of the advice circulating on WhatsApp is out of date. It is no longer simply a matter of booking an appointment and walking in with a folder.
You now complete the application form online first and upload your documents there. The file goes through an initial review. Only when your status changes to show that your passport is to be submitted do you attend the visa application centre in person, hand over your passport and documents, give your fingerprints and pay the fee. After the decision you return to collect your passport.
That first online stage is where most of the damage is done or avoided. A form that contradicts your documents will come back to you, and every round trip costs days you may not have before a fair.
Where you attend in person
Lagos. The Chinese Visa Application Service Centre moved in March 2026 and is now on the third floor of Purple Mall, Freedom Way, Lekki Phase 1.
Abuja. The centre serving the Abuja consular district is at Churchgate Plaza, Plot 473, A0 Cadastral Zone, Constitution Avenue, Central Business District.
Which one you use depends on where you live, because the consular districts are split between Lagos and Abuja. Confirm the current address and opening hours on the official site before you travel, since these things do change, as the Lagos move shows.
Fingerprints are collected when you attend, unless you fall under one of the specific exemptions the authorities publish from time to time. Assume you will give them and plan the journey.
What goes into a strong file
Your passport
It should have comfortable validity beyond your return date and blank pages. If yours is close to expiry, renew it before you spend money on anything else. A passport running out of time is one of the most common reasons a plan collapses.
The application form
It is long and detailed: personal information, family, education, work history for several years, travel history, your itinerary, and who is inviting you. Every answer has to agree with the documents behind it. A name spelt differently, a date that does not line up, an address that conflicts with another paper, and the file goes back for correction.
This is the part we do with you. We take your answers in plain English and map them onto the official form field by field, so nothing contradicts your passport or your business papers.
Evidence of your business
The people reviewing your file want to see a real trader. Your business registration, tax papers, invoices or stock records should show that you actually buy and sell the goods you say you are going to source. Bank statements should show ordinary business movement. A single large deposit appearing days before the application raises more questions than it answers.
The Canton Fair invitation letter
If you are attending the fair, the invitation from the organiser supports your stated purpose. It confirms the dates, the venue in Pazhou and your status as a registered buyer. We request it as part of your trip planning once you are registered. We do not sell invitation letters on their own, because a letter without a real trip behind it helps nobody and it is the kind of thing that gets a file refused.
What makes a file weak
Rarely the absence of one document. Usually contradiction. A stated income that does not match the account. A company address that does not match the utility bill. An itinerary that does not fit the fair dates. Each mismatch is another reason to ask questions.
A first-time traveller with no stamps in the passport does attract more scrutiny. That is normal and it is not a disqualification. The answer is a clean, honest, consistent file, not a manufactured one. Never let anybody talk you into a fake bank statement or a borrowed balance. A refusal is recoverable. A false document is a much larger problem, and it follows you.
There is no magic bank balance. If somebody quotes you a figure and guarantees approval at that number, they are selling you comfort, not truth. What matters is whether your documents make sense together at the scale of business you are describing.
Fees and timing
The fee is set by the Chinese authorities and paid at the centre when you attend. A reduced fee policy has been running and is currently extended to the end of December 2026. We will not print an amount here, because fee schedules and exchange rates move and a stale number on a website is worse than no number. We tell you the current figure when we plan your file.
Work backwards from the date you need to be in China, not forwards from today. You need the invitation, then a complete file, then the online review, then the in-person visit, then processing, then room for something to go wrong. Processing after submission is normally a matter of working days, but normal is not a promise, and the weeks before a fair are the busiest of the year.
Two things not to do while you wait. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket because you have started an application, and do not tell a supplier your visa is approved before it is in your passport. Both are ordinary mistakes and both are expensive.
Being honest about the calendar: for the October 2026 session, a new applicant starting now is realistically too late for a first-time visa, and remote sourcing is the sensible route. For the Spring 2027 session, expected in April and May but not yet confirmed by the organiser, starting your file in January gives you a comfortable run.
Start here, it takes two minutes
Tell us three things and a person from the desk replies on WhatsApp, usually the same working day. Nothing is payable to register, and nothing is due until you have agreed a plan in writing.
