1688, Alibaba.com and Taobao are all part of the Alibaba ecosystem, but they were built for different buyers.

That difference matters when you are importing from China to Nigeria.

Alibaba.com is an international B2B marketplace built for businesses buying across borders.

1688.com is China's domestic wholesale marketplace, built mainly for Chinese businesses buying stock.

Taobao is primarily a Chinese retail marketplace built for consumers buying individual products.

Alibaba Group itself describes 1688 as its leading domestic wholesale marketplace, Alibaba.com as its international wholesale business, and Taobao as China's leading retail e-commerce platform. (alibabagroup.com)

The cheapest price on the screen is therefore not automatically the cheapest way to get goods into Nigeria.

Here is the difference.

1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao at a glance #

Alibaba.com 1688.com Taobao
Main market International B2B China domestic wholesale China domestic retail
Best for Importers and businesses Traders sourcing at domestic wholesale prices Samples and individual consumer products
Main language International/multilingual Mainly Chinese Mainly Chinese
Pricing Export-oriented Usually domestic RMB pricing Retail pricing
Typical quantity Sample to container Small wholesale to large wholesale Often one piece
Supplier type Factories and trading companies Factories, distributors and wholesalers Retail stores and merchants
Buyer protection Strong cross-border Trade Assurance system 1688 transaction protection, but designed around China Consumer marketplace protection
Nigerian payment International payment options Cross-border payment now possible; agents also common Usually more difficult from Nigeria
Shipping to Nigeria Supplier/Alibaba Logistics/your forwarder Some official Nigeria routes now exist; forwarders still widely used Usually agent or forwarder
Best beginner choice Usually yes Once you understand the process Mainly for samples

The important word is usually.

There are exceptions on every platform.

Alibaba.com: easiest for a Nigerian beginner #

If this is your first real China order, Alibaba.com is normally the easiest platform to understand.

Alibaba.com says it operates across more than 190 countries and regions and is specifically designed for business-to-business sourcing. Buyers can search suppliers, negotiate, place orders, pay and arrange logistics within the platform. (buyer.alibaba.com)

You can communicate with suppliers in English.

Prices are presented for international buyers.

Suppliers are accustomed to questions about:

That convenience is valuable when you are still learning.

What does Trade Assurance actually protect? #

This is Alibaba.com's biggest advantage over trying to send money directly to an unknown Chinese supplier.

For an eligible order, you agree the terms with the supplier and pay through Alibaba.com.

Alibaba currently says Trade Assurance can provide protection where an order:

Alibaba can mediate disputes and provide refunds or compensation where the conditions are met. (tradeassurance.alibaba.com)

The protection depends heavily on what is written into the order.

If you simply write:

10,000 quality chargers.

that is weak.

Write:

10,000 USB-C 20W chargers, EU plug, 100–240V input, model ABC20, specified chipset, Nigerian-compliant packaging, shipment deadline 15 November.

Now there is something measurable.

Our Alibaba Trade Assurance guide explains how to write an order that is actually useful in a dispute.

Keep the Alibaba conversation on Alibaba #

Alibaba itself advises buyers to keep sourcing and transaction communication within its Message Center where possible.

That matters if something goes wrong.

A supplier may quickly ask:

“Send me WhatsApp.”

WhatsApp is convenient.

But the important price, specification, delivery date and quality commitments should also exist in the Alibaba order or message record.

And pay through Alibaba.com if you expect Trade Assurance protection.

Alibaba states that Trade Assurance applies to qualifying orders placed and paid through its system. (activity.alibaba.com)

What do Alibaba supplier badges mean? #

Do not treat every badge as identical.

Alibaba currently describes:

Gold Supplier — a business whose legal registration has been verified by a third-party institution.

Verified Supplier — a Gold Supplier that has undergone additional third-party assessment of areas such as the company profile, management, production capabilities, products and processes.

Trade Assurance Supplier — a supplier accepting transactions through Alibaba.com's protected payment/order system. (activity.alibaba.com)

A Verified Supplier badge is useful.

It is not the same thing as personally verifying your particular order.

A genuine company can still manufacture a bad batch.

A factory inspection performed last year does not prove that the 5,000 power banks you are buying this month contain the battery cells you agreed.

Use the badge as one check, not the final check.

Is Alibaba.com always more expensive? #

No.

This claim is repeated too casually.

Alibaba.com can sometimes show higher export prices than 1688 because the seller may be including:

But the same manufacturer may quote competitively on both platforms.

And some 1688 listings are wholesalers rather than factories.

Compare the same specification and same quantity.

Do not compare an Alibaba export-ready charger with a cheap domestic 1688 charger simply because both photographs look identical.

1688: where China buys wholesale #

1688 is different.

Alibaba Group describes it as China's leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace and a major supply source for Chinese e-commerce sellers. (alibabagroup.com)

This is why Nigerians are interested in it.

The platform can put you closer to the prices Chinese shop owners and online sellers themselves see.

Listings are primarily in Chinese.

Prices are usually in RMB.

Suppliers commonly serve China's domestic market first.

That can produce excellent sourcing opportunities.

It also creates extra work.

Is 1688 always cheaper than Alibaba? #

No.

Often cheaper is fair.

Always cheaper is not.

Suppose:

Alibaba price: ¥20 equivalent per piece

1688 price: ¥15

The ¥5 difference looks excellent.

Now add:

The final difference may be ¥2.

Or it may still be ¥5.

Or the Alibaba supplier may beat it when you ask for 10,000 pieces.

Compare landed cost, not screenshots.

Our landed cost guide explains that calculation.

Can a Nigerian now pay directly on 1688? #

This is one of the big 2026 updates.

Yes, there are now authorised cross-border payment routes.

WorldFirst currently offers several 1688 payment options for international buyers, including World Pay, a solution developed with 1688 that lets overseas buyers fund payments outside mainland China while suppliers receive Chinese currency. (worldfirst.com)

Its current Africa guidance also lists additional methods, including WorldFirst balance payments and, for eligible checkout situations, Visa/Mastercard payments subject to platform conditions and fees. (worldfirst.com)

So the old advice:

“You cannot buy from 1688 without a Chinese agent because you cannot pay.”

is now outdated.

A sourcing agent can still be extremely useful.

They are just no longer the only route to payment.

Do you still need an agent for 1688? #

Sometimes.

Payment is only one job an agent performs.

A good China sourcing agent can:

If you are buying from ten separate 1688 sellers, direct payment does not magically put ten cartons into one Nigerian shipment.

You still need a logistics plan.

Our shipping from 1688 to Nigeria guide explains that part.

Does 1688 now ship to Nigeria? #

For some Nigerian users and eligible orders, official logistics options have begun appearing.

Current WorldFirst Africa guidance for its 1688 partnership says the Nigeria route can use Speedaf Express, with sellers first sending goods to a Guangzhou warehouse before international transport and Nigerian delivery or collection. It also describes multiple Nigerian pickup locations. (worldfirst.com)

That is a meaningful change.

But do not turn it into:

“1688 now ships every product directly to every address in Nigeria.”

Availability depends on:

For larger commercial shipments, dangerous goods, batteries, machinery or consolidated supplier orders, a specialist freight forwarder may still be the better route.

1688 does not mean factory #

This is another mistake.

You will find factories on 1688.

You will also find:

A cheap listing is not proof of factory ownership.

If direct manufacturing matters, verify:

Our Chinese supplier checking guide explains the checks.

Taobao: China's retail giant #

Taobao solves a different problem.

Alibaba Group describes Taobao as China's leading retail e-commerce platform, built around Chinese consumers buying an enormous range of everyday goods. (alibabagroup.com)

Think:

Chinese Amazon-style consumer shopping ecosystem

rather than

international wholesale sourcing platform.

That makes Taobao very useful for one thing:

finding individual products and samples.

When is Taobao useful to a Nigerian importer? #

Suppose you see a new rechargeable lamp trending online and want one unit to inspect.

The factory on Alibaba wants an MOQ of 100.

A 1688 seller wants six.

A Taobao shop sells one.

Buy the Taobao piece.

Inspect it.

Open it.

Test it.

Then find the manufacturer or wholesale source if you decide to import properly.

That is a good use of Taobao.

Should you build your import business around Taobao? #

Usually no.

Not because Taobao is a bad platform.

Because it is solving the wrong problem.

Retail prices are not necessarily wholesale prices.

Sellers are not necessarily set up for export documentation.

Product quantities may be limited.

A shop selling individual consumer items may not want to customise cartons, labels or specifications for you.

And Nigerian delivery is not the platform's main use case.

For Nigerian buyers, Taobao purchasing normally makes more sense through a China-side agent or forwarding arrangement where direct delivery is unavailable.

Which platform should a Nigerian beginner use? #

For somebody placing their first serious commercial order, I would normally start with Alibaba.com.

Not because it always has the lowest price.

Because the learning curve is lower.

You have:

Pay a little more while learning if necessary.

Losing 5% in purchasing price hurts less than losing 100% of the order.

When should you move to 1688? #

Move toward 1688 when you know the product.

For example, you have already sold three batches of the same phone charger.

You know:

Now search 1688.

Compare the domestic supply chain.

Get samples.

Calculate the landed cost.

That is when 1688 becomes powerful.

You are no longer buying a mysterious product because it is cheap.

You are sourcing a product you understand.

Which is better for mini importation? #

It depends on what you mean by mini importation.

For a beginner buying small amounts of several products:

Alibaba.com — easiest for international ordering.

1688 — potentially better pricing, but more operational work.

Taobao — useful for individual samples or unusual consumer items.

For products that can be purchased internationally in tiny quantities, AliExpress can sometimes also be easier than all three, although it is a different marketplace.

The goal should not be to use the platform that sounds most advanced.

Use the one that leaves you the best combination of price, control and risk.

What about regulated products? #

The platform changes nothing about Nigerian law.

A SON-regulated product bought on 1688 does not become exempt from SONCAP.

A cosmetic bought on Taobao does not become exempt from NAFDAC because you ordered only 20 pieces.

A telecommunications product on Alibaba may still have NCC requirements.

The supplier needs to be able to produce whatever technical and regulatory documentation your Nigerian import requires.

Use our certificate guide before paying.

What about batteries and power banks? #

This is particularly important for Nigerian mini importers.

You may find an excellent 1688 price on:

The sourcing price is not the full problem.

Lithium products have additional transport requirements.

Your normal air-cargo route may charge more or require specific documents.

Read our shipping batteries from China guide before ordering 500 power banks because the unit price looks attractive.

How should you compare the same product properly? #

Do not search:

iPhone cable

and compare three random listings.

Build one specification.

For example:

USB-C to Lightning cable

1 metre

PD fast charging

specific conductor requirement

100g packaging maximum

white

custom brand

2,000 pieces

Then ask Alibaba suppliers.

Search the same specification on 1688.

Buy one Taobao example if useful.

Now compare.

That is a real sourcing exercise.

A simple example #

Imagine the same type of phone holder appears as:

Taobao: ¥25 for one

Alibaba: ¥16 at 500 pieces

1688: ¥10 at 100 pieces

The beginner says:

1688 wins.

Not yet.

Maybe the 1688 unit:

Meanwhile the Alibaba seller agrees to ¥14.50 for 1,000, packs for export and accepts Trade Assurance.

Now the decision is different.

The screen price is only the beginning.

Paying safely on Alibaba #

On Alibaba.com, keep qualifying payments inside the Alibaba system if you want Trade Assurance.

Alibaba currently supports various payment methods including cards, bank transfers and digital payment options depending on buyer eligibility. (tradeassurance.alibaba.com)

If the supplier says:

Cancel the Alibaba order and send $8,000 directly to my personal account. I give you 5% discount.

you now understand what that discount costs.

You may be leaving the platform protection behind.

Our China payment scams guide covers this pattern.

Paying safely on 1688 #

1688 is improving for overseas buyers, but still check whose account receives the money.

If using the official cross-border payment integration, keep the order and payment linked through the recognised system.

If using an agent, make sure you receive:

Do not allow:

“Goods: ₦1.4 million.”

with no breakdown.

You cannot compare what you cannot see.

So which one should you use? #

For a first-time Nigerian importer:

Alibaba.com.

For an importer who already understands the product and wants to push purchasing cost down:

1688.

For one sample or an unusual consumer product:

Taobao.

For a container order, the answer could still be Alibaba or 1688 depending on the supplier.

The platform is not the business.

The supplier, specification, landed cost and Nigerian market are the business.

Where ChinaBridge comes in #

ChinaBridge can source across all three marketplaces.

But our job should not be:

“Send us any 1688 link and we buy it.”

The better process is:

  1. Identify what you want to sell in Nigeria.
  2. Confirm the specification.
  3. Compare Alibaba, 1688 and other Chinese sources.
  4. Check the suppliers.
  5. Order samples where necessary.
  6. Calculate the landed cost.
  7. Choose the source that makes commercial sense.
  8. Receive or consolidate the goods in China.
  9. Inspect before international shipment.
  10. Send the correct documents with the cargo.

Sometimes 1688 wins.

Sometimes Alibaba wins.

Sometimes neither one has the right factory.

If you send ChinaBridge the product, quantity and target Nigerian selling price, we can compare the Chinese sourcing routes and tell you which one is cheapest after the goods reach Nigeria, rather than which website shows the smallest number.
