Air vs Sea Freight from China to Nigeria: Costs
Compare air vs sea freight from China to Nigeria: costs, delivery stages, chargeable weight and hidden fees, with examples for Nigerian importers.

Air vs Sea Freight from China to Nigeria: Costs and Timing
Choosing air vs sea freight from China to Nigeria starts with the packed shipment, the date you need the goods and the complete cost to your collection or delivery address. Air generally suits urgent, compact or valuable stock; sea often suits bulkier orders that can tolerate a longer journey.
Compare both methods using the same goods and delivery endpoint. An air quote ending at Lagos airport cannot be compared directly with a sea quote that includes clearance and warehouse collection.
For a Nigerian importer, the useful question is whether the saving from sea freight outweighs the commercial value of receiving the stock earlier. This guide explains the calculations, quotation checks and delivery stages needed to make that decision.
What is the practical difference between air and sea freight? #
Air and sea use different transport networks, charging methods and handling stages.
| Buying consideration | Air freight | Sea freight |
|---|---|---|
| Typical reason to choose it | Urgent replenishment, samples or compact stock | Larger, heavier or bulkier planned orders |
| Main freight charging basis | Chargeable weight under the service tariff | LCL weight/measure or an FCL container quotation |
| Timing question | When will the goods be accepted, flown, cleared and released? | When will the goods be consolidated, sailed, cleared and released? |
| Cost trap | Billing weight exceeds scale weight | Local charges or minimums outweigh the advertised ocean rate |
| Delivery check | Airport collection, warehouse collection or address delivery? | Port release, warehouse collection or address delivery? |
These are starting points. A small shipment can attract substantial sea minimums, while an urgent bulky product can become expensive by air. Request comparable quotations before deciding.
Also identify the actual air service: express courier, consolidated air cargo and another forwarder’s specialist line can have different inclusions and acceptance rules.
When is air freight worth the extra cost? #
Air deserves a quotation when a delay would have a measurable business consequence.
Examples include a Port Harcourt technician waiting for a correctly matched replacement board, an Abuja retailer testing a new product, or a Lagos distributor replenishing compact stock against confirmed orders.
Record what earlier delivery would achieve:
- An otherwise-lost sale can be completed.
- A repair customer can be served.
- A sample can be tested before a bulk order.
- A stock shortage can be covered until the main shipment arrives.
Use contribution after the normal product and selling costs when valuing an avoided lost sale. The full selling price is not the benefit available to pay for faster shipping.
Check the product’s packed size too. A light item in a large protective box may have a high billing weight. Our shipping cost per kg guide explains what to include in an air-cargo enquiry.
When does sea freight make more sense? #
Sea deserves serious consideration when the order occupies substantial space, has no immediate selling deadline and still produces a useful margin after all charges.
That can include planned replenishment of equipment, tools, packaging or other suitable goods. Product acceptance, import requirements and packing still need to be confirmed.
You do not need to fill a container to request sea freight. LCL means less than container load: your cargo shares container space. FCL means a container is booked for your shipment, even if every part of its capacity is not used.
DHL’s LCL cost guidance explains that weight, measurement and local origin and destination charges affect the bill. A low ocean-freight figure is only one component.
For an order approaching container scale, compare both options using our LCL vs FCL guide. There is no universal CBM threshold that makes one arrangement cheaper for every shipment.
How is air-freight chargeable weight calculated? #
Start with the final packed dimensions and gross weight of each package. Include pallets or crates where applicable.
A common calculation is:
Volumetric weight in kg = length × width × height in centimetres ÷ the service’s divisor.
The provider then applies its tariff, commonly comparing actual and volumetric weight. Confirm the divisor, rounding, minimum charge and whether the calculation is made per package or across the shipment.
DHL Global Forwarding’s explanation uses a 6,000 divisor for its air-freight example. DHL’s dimensional-weight help states a standard 5,000 divisor for that service. Do not assume every quotation follows the same rule.
Consider four hypothetical cartons, each measuring 60 × 40 × 50 cm and weighing 10 kg:
| Calculation | Per carton | Four cartons |
|---|---|---|
| Actual gross weight | 10 kg | 40 kg |
| Volume | 0.12 CBM | 0.48 CBM |
| Volumetric weight using 6,000 | 20 kg | 80 kg |
| Volumetric weight using 5,000 | 24 kg | 96 kg |
Under the stated comparison methods, the shipment could be billed at 80 kg or 96 kg before other tariff adjustments, despite weighing 40 kg on the scale.
Our volumetric-weight guide develops this calculation. Keep necessary protective packaging when reviewing whether cartons can be reduced.
How do CBM, weight and minimum charges affect sea freight? #
Calculate volume from the outside of the finished package:
CBM = length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 1,000,000.
For the four cartons above, the total is 0.48 CBM. That measurement alone does not establish the final sea bill.
Ask whether the service charges by CBM, weight/measure, another stated basis or a container rate. Under an illustrative LCL weight/measure tariff comparing CBM with metric tonnes:
| Cargo | Volume | Gross weight in tonnes | Larger billing measure before minimums |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four example cartons | 0.48 CBM | 0.04 tonnes | 0.48 |
| Hypothetical dense cargo | 1.2 CBM | 2 tonnes | 2 |
A quotation with a one-unit minimum would apply that minimum to the first example. A different service may use different rules, so obtain the actual tariff.
Check documentation, handling, deconsolidation, clearance, storage and collection charges separately. For a small shipment, those costs can materially change the result.
Use our cost-per-CBM guide when preparing the sea quotation request.
How should you compare delivery times? #
Compare the date the goods are available to you, rather than only the flight or sailing duration.
Ask each provider to identify:
- Supplier collection or warehouse receipt.
- Inspection, packing and document completion.
- Cargo acceptance and consolidation cut-off.
- Scheduled international departure.
- Arrival at the Nigerian airport or port.
- Clearance and release for collection.
- Onward delivery to your city.
Air can reduce the international transport stage substantially, but supplier delays, missed departures or incomplete documents still affect the whole journey.
Maersk’s air-service comparison labels its published service windows as airport-to-airport. Those windows should not be presented as a guaranteed China-to-Nigeria delivery period.
Our shipping-time guide helps separate the stages. If the goods are going beyond Lagos, include collection and inland transport; our Nigerian haulage guide covers that part of the planning.
How should you compare air vs sea freight from China to Nigeria? #
Make both quotations cover the same journey and identify every exclusion.
The following invented planning example compares logistics budgets through delivery to an Ibadan address. These are not current freight rates, tax assessments or ChinaBridge prices.
| Budget item | Air example | Sea example |
|---|---|---|
| China pickup and handling | ₦30,000 | ₦30,000 |
| Main freight | ₦480,000 | ₦150,000 |
| Other documentation and destination handling | ₦45,000 | ₦70,000 |
| Import charges and clearance allowance | ₦100,000 | ₦100,000 |
| Insurance allowance | ₦15,000 | ₦15,000 |
| Delivery to the Ibadan address | ₦20,000 | ₦35,000 |
| Total logistics budget | ₦690,000 | ₦400,000 |
The illustrative air premium is ₦290,000. The goods themselves and your other business expenses are excluded.
Equal import allowances here are arithmetic placeholders. Actual charges must be assessed separately for the shipment; changing freight arrangements can also change the valuation information used.
If faster delivery prevents otherwise-lost sales contributing ₦10,000 each before this premium, 29 such sales would cover the illustrative difference. Orders merely brought forward from next month do not automatically represent additional sales.
Check what the supplier already pays under the agreed FOB or CIF terms. For an all-inclusive offer, use our DDP shipping guide to clarify the contractual scope.
Then complete your landed-cost calculation, adding each cost once.
Can you send urgent stock by air and the balance by sea? #
Yes, where the cargo, supplier and providers support the arrangement. Compare it with sending everything by one method.
For example, a trader with 100 identical units could request three budgets: all by air, all by sea, and 20 by air with 80 by sea. The split is an option to price, not a recommended quantity for every business.
Check the costs created by separating the order:
- Additional packing and warehouse handling.
- Separate minimum freight or documentation charges.
- Applicable certification and clearance arrangements.
- Clear invoices, packing lists and carton identification.
- Supplier lead time for the first batch.
Allocate shared inspection or purchasing costs consistently. Keep each shipment’s quantities and references traceable.
If several suppliers are involved, our order-consolidation guide explains warehouse receiving. Combining supplier orders and choosing the international transport method are separate decisions.
Which documents and cargo restrictions should you check? #
Changing from sea to air does not by itself remove Nigerian import requirements.
Give your bank, licensed clearing agent and relevant conformity provider the exact product description, value and proposed arrangement. Confirm the applicable Form M, clearance and product-approval requirements before dispatch.
Check classification using our HS-code guide. Different products in one order may require separate descriptions and treatment.
SON’s official FAQ distinguishes the Product Certificate used for Form M from the SONCAP Certificate used for clearance of regulated goods. Our SONCAP guide explains the enquiry to make.
Cargo acceptance needs separate review. For lithium batteries, supply the model, chemistry, capacity, quantity and packing configuration. IATA’s battery guidance explains that air transport depends on the battery’s configuration and characteristics.
Ask for acceptance and the required documentation before buying. Use our battery-shipping guide for that planning step. Disclose liquids, aerosols and other products requiring classification review too.
How should you protect the goods and arrange insurance? #
Choose packing around the product, handling and route. A supplier’s retail box may need an outer carton, corner protection, moisture protection or a suitable crate.
Ask the provider to review fragile, non-stackable or unusually heavy packages before dispatch. Obtain the final measurements after the agreed protection is added, then refresh the quotation if needed.
For insurance, establish the insured journey, value, exclusions, deductible, evidence requirements and reporting deadline. A forwarder’s compensation promise and an insurance policy can offer different protection.
Our cargo-insurance guide sets out the questions to take to the provider.
Keep the commercial invoice, packing records, package photographs and transport references. At collection, check the carton count and visible condition and record discrepancies promptly under the applicable claims procedure.
What information should you send for comparable quotations? #
Prepare one shipment file and send the same version to both providers.
Include:
- Product names, photographs, materials and intended use.
- Quantity, invoice value and cargo ready date.
- China collection address or warehouse location.
- Final package count, outside dimensions and gross weights.
- Batteries, liquids, aerosols or other special handling information.
- Required collection or delivery address in Nigeria.
- Latest commercially useful delivery date.
- Supplier delivery terms and available documents.
A practical enquiry can read:
Please quote air and sea options for the attached shipment from [China address] to [full Nigerian address]. State the billing basis, minimums, included charges, exclusions, cargo acceptance, estimated departure and delivery stages, insurance arrangements and quote validity.
Request the quote currency and any conversion method. If China charges are in RMB and other charges are in USD or naira, record the rate, payment fees and when the amount becomes fixed.
ChinaBridge service fees and third-party charges should be identifiable in the quotation. Confirm which costs remain estimates and what could change them.

What else do Nigerian importers ask about air and sea freight? #
Is air freight always more expensive? #
The main air-freight charge is often higher for comparable cargo, but the complete result depends on shipment size, minimums, local charges and delivery scope. Price both options through the same endpoint.
Is sea freight always cheaper for a small carton? #
No. Minimum charges, handling and documentation can make a small sea shipment unattractive. Compare the final packed carton and all destination charges with an air quotation.
Can my 40 kg shipment be billed as 80 kg? #
Yes, under a tariff where volumetric weight is 80 kg and exceeds the physical weight. Request the dimensions, divisor, rounding and complete calculation before accepting the charge.
How many days will my shipment take? #
Request a current estimate for the actual cargo, route and service. Establish when the clock starts, what stages it includes and when the goods should be available at your Nigerian destination.
Can every battery product travel by air? #
No. Acceptance depends on the battery, packing configuration, applicable transport requirements and the provider. Obtain confirmation for the exact goods and shipment before purchasing or sending them to a warehouse.
Does door-to-door automatically include every charge? #
The label alone is insufficient. Confirm the named address, clearance, duties, handling, delivery, unloading and exclusions in writing. A Lagos warehouse collection service has a different scope from delivery to your Ibadan shop.
Which method should a first-time importer choose? #
Begin with the product, saleable margin and purpose of the order. A technically suitable small air trial may help test a supplier or product; a planned bulk replenishment may justify sea. Compare complete quotations and a trial quantity you can manage.
