Flat-pack Furniture from China: Nigerian Buyer Guide

Flat-pack furniture can occupy less shipping space than the same item packed fully assembled. The useful comparison is the total cost of receiving a complete, usable product in Nigeria.

Include packaging, freight, assembly, missing-part exposure and delivery to the final room or premises.

First confirm whether your specific furniture can be imported under the current Nigerian rules. This guide compares packing options; it does not establish permission to import a particular item.

1. What must you confirm before comparing freight? #

Identify the actual product, materials, intended use and proposed HS classification.

Nigeria announced revised fiscal and tariff measures in 2026, including a revised trade prohibition list. Older furniture lists and seller assurances should not be treated as a current product-specific ruling.

Ask for confirmation of the applicable import status and requirements through Nigeria Customs and a competent licensed customs agent before paying.

Do not assume dismantling an item automatically makes it eligible as a permitted furniture part.

Once the actual product is confirmed suitable for import, compare its packing options. Our Foshan furniture-market guide explains the sourcing setting.

2. Which dimensions should the supplier send? #

Request the final external dimensions of every package, its gross weight and the quantity of furniture units contained inside.

Keep assembled product dimensions separate from shipping-carton dimensions.

For an item split across several cartons, ask for the full package list. A quotation showing only the largest panel carton may leave out legs, fittings or accessories packed elsewhere.

Confirm whether protective frames, crates or pallets will be added later. Request revised measurements after any such work.

Our CBM guide explains how to review volume-based quotations.

Use photographs showing the closed packages alongside the supplier’s measurement record. Confirm final figures with the forwarder before approving dispatch.

3. How do you compare the packed volume? #

Calculate each package separately using metres:

Length × width × height = CBM.

Then add every package required for the same complete item.

Here is a fictional measurement example, not a supplier quotation or loading plan.

An assembled item travels in one carton measuring 120 × 60 × 70 cm:

1.20 × 0.60 × 0.70 = 0.504 CBM.

The alternative packing uses two cartons:

Combined volume is 0.129 CBM per complete item.

The difference is 0.375 CBM. For ten identical complete items, the example totals are 5.04 CBM versus 1.29 CBM.

These are geometric volumes. Ask whether the tariff also uses weight, minimum charges, rounding or handling restrictions.

For air or express options, our volumetric-weight guide explains why packed space can affect chargeable weight.

4. What work moves to Nigeria when furniture is dismantled? #

Compare the quoted costs of flat-pack furniture with the practical work needed after arrival.

Ask who will assemble it, what tools and skills are needed and how long assembly should reasonably take.

Request clear instructions, a complete hardware list and identification of each component. Confirm whether fittings are standard or specific to the model.

Arrange a trial assembly before committing to a larger order. Check whether parts align, the finished item functions properly and the instructions match the actual product.

Establish who will resolve missing or incorrect components. A small fitting can delay completion if a suitable replacement is unavailable locally.

Include assembly labour, transport to the installation point and any agreed installation work in the budget.

5. Which packing risks should you compare? #

Both formats need protection appropriate to their construction and transport conditions.

For dismantled items, review panel edges, corners, surfaces, glass where present and the way fittings are secured.

For assembled items, examine vulnerable projections, joints, legs and spaces where movement could damage the item.

Ask whether packages can be stacked and what handling restrictions the forwarder will apply. A compact carton is useful only if the packing protects the goods adequately.

Use our quality-inspection guide to agree checks for components, finish, fit, hardware and packaging.

If several suppliers are involved, identify which cartons form each complete item. Our order-consolidation guide explains receiving coordination.

6. How should you compare the complete quotations? #

Give the forwarder the same product quantity, origin arrangements and final Nigerian delivery location for both options.

Request a breakdown covering:

A reduction in volume does not guarantee the same percentage reduction in the final bill. Some charges are fixed, and the actual tariff may use other factors.

Use our landed-cost guide to keep the comparison consistent.

Choose using the total cost and the likelihood of receiving a complete usable item. Record the approved packing specification so the supplier does not change it without review.

7. What else do Nigerian buyers ask? #

Is flat packing always cheaper? #

Compare actual quotations. Smaller packages may reduce space-related charges while adding assembly, packing or handling costs.

Does dismantling furniture remove import restrictions? #

Do not assume that it does. Confirm the classification and current import position of the actual goods before buying or shipping.

Can I use the showroom dimensions for shipping? #

Request final packed dimensions. The assembled product size does not describe the cartons, protective materials or other packages that will travel.

What if one product needs several cartons? #

Link every carton to the same item reference and record the complete package count. Check that all required cartons are received before treating the item as complete.

Should I remove protection to reduce CBM? #

Ask the supplier and forwarder to review suitable packing. Savings need to be assessed alongside the risk of damage and the agreed transport conditions.

What if I cannot assemble the sample? #

Resolve the instructions, fitting or design problem before a larger order. Confirm that the proposed assembly method works with the actual components.

Does lower CBM guarantee more units fit in a container? #

No. Actual loading also depends on package shapes, stackability, weight, access and securing arrangements. Request an appropriate loading assessment.
