FOB vs CIF Shipping from China to Nigeria
FOB vs CIF shipping from China to Nigeria can change who arranges freight, what your supplier's price includes and which costs you must budget separately.
Your Chinese supplier offers a price "CIF Lagos". Another offers a lower "FOB" price. You want to know which deal will cost less by the time the goods reach your shop.
Start by checking what each quotation covers.
A price that includes freight is not automatically your full landed cost.
You also need to understand shipping risk, the insurance arrangement and Nigeria's import requirements before choosing the term.
What is the difference between FOB and CIF? #
Both are Incoterms rules used in international sales contracts.
FOB means Free On Board.
The seller delivers the goods on board the buyer's nominated vessel at the named shipment port and handles export clearance. The buyer normally arranges and pays for the main sea freight.
CIF means Cost, Insurance and Freight.
The seller arranges and pays for sea freight and the required cargo insurance to the named destination port. Nigerian import clearance remains the buyer's responsibility.
The ICC's sea transport rules explain these obligations.
Write the named port and rule version into the agreement. "FOB China" does not identify a shipment port. "CIF Lagos" should be clarified to the actual destination port.
Use our proforma invoice checklist to check the supplier's quotation before paying.
When does shipping risk pass to the buyer? #
Under the normal FOB and CIF arrangements, risk passes when the goods are placed on board the vessel at the shipment port.
CIF does not keep transport risk with the seller until the goods arrive in Nigeria.
The seller can pay for freight while the buyer bears the risk during the voyage. The insurance arrangement matters because it covers the buyer's exposure, subject to the policy.
ICC Academy explains this separation in its guide to risk under C terms.
Ask which loading port is used and when insurance starts. Keep the shipment notification and relevant transport records together.
Our bill of lading guide explains the document references to check.
Does CIF include Nigerian customs clearance and delivery? #
CIF does not automatically include import duty, Nigerian customs clearance or delivery to your warehouse in Lagos, Aba, Onitsha or Kano.
Ask for a separate destination-cost breakdown covering:
- Import duties and applicable taxes.
- Clearing-agent services.
- Carrier document and release charges.
- Terminal handling or storage charges.
- Trucking to your final delivery address.
Some unloading charges may already be included in the seller's freight contract. Confirm the allocation rather than paying twice for the same service.
Check our landed-cost guide and ask your agent to explain the Apapa clearing process where that port applies.
Also confirm free time and collection arrangements. A CIF quotation does not remove the need to plan for demurrage and detention.
What insurance should a Nigerian importer check? #
Do not accept "insurance included" as a complete answer.
Under Incoterms 2020, CIF normally requires the seller to obtain Institute Cargo Clauses (C) cover or similar. Parties can agree wider cover. ICC explains this in its insurance guidance.
Nigeria's local insurance requirement also matters.
Section 82 of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 requires insurance for goods imported into Nigeria to be placed with an insurer registered under the Act.
It also requires relevant Nigerian bank letters of credit or similar documents to use a carriage and freight basis. Confirm the permitted invoice and financing wording with your bank before ordering.
Ask your Nigerian insurer and bank to check the supplier's proposed arrangement. A foreign policy should not be assumed to satisfy the local requirement.
If the seller will arrange sea freight while you arrange compliant insurance, discuss CFR, where appropriate for the shipment. Under CFR, the seller pays freight without a duty to buy insurance for the buyer.
Use our cargo insurance guide to prepare questions about cover, exclusions and claims.
Are FOB and CIF suitable for container shipments? #
FOB and CIF are sea or inland-waterway rules. They are not air-freight terms.
For containerised goods handed to a carrier at a warehouse or terminal before vessel loading, consider a rule that matches that handover.
ICC Academy's FCA and FOB comparison explains why FCA is often the appropriate choice for container movements.
FCA means Free Carrier. It identifies an agreed delivery place where the seller hands over the goods under that rule's conditions.
If the seller arranges the main transport, discuss CPT or CIP as appropriate. Any insurance arrangement must still meet Nigeria's requirements.
Ask your forwarder to confirm the actual handover point, transport mode and responsibilities. Our shipping company guide explains the different providers involved.
How do you compare FOB and CIF prices fairly? #
Compare FOB vs CIF shipping from China to Nigeria using the same product specifications, quantity, shipment dates and destination.
Illustrative comparison
Imagine two provisional supplier quotations for the same order:
- FOB quotation: USD 8,000.
- Your separately quoted sea freight: USD 1,800.
- Your separately quoted local insurance: USD 120.
- Subtotal before destination costs: USD 9,920.
The second supplier quotes USD 9,900 CIF.
These are invented figures for comparison, not current shipping rates.
The apparent USD 20 saving does not settle the decision. Check the second quotation's insurance compliance and what each freight arrangement includes.
Then add the remaining destination charges and inland delivery to both options without duplicating included costs.
Confirm carton measurements and weight using the packing-list guide. For Alibaba orders, the shipping-cost checklist helps you ask for an itemised quote.
What should you agree before paying the supplier? #
Record the arrangement in your purchase order, not just a chat message saying "shipping included".
Confirm:
- The trade term, named port or place and Incoterms version.
- Product specifications, quantity and packing.
- Who books transport and handles export clearance.
- The insurance provider and required cover.
- Charges included and excluded from the quotation.
- Shipment timing, documents and cargo-release procedure.
- Payment milestones and the person coordinating each step.
Keep the commercial invoice consistent with the agreed transaction details. Use quality inspection in China to check the goods against your specifications before shipment.
