How much is one CBM from China to Nigeria? What is in the price

How much one CBM from China to Nigeria costs depends on what is inside the quote. How a cubic metre is measured, the minimum, and what arrives as a second bill.

If you ask five shipping companies how much one CBM from China to Nigeria costs, you can easily get five different answers.

That does not automatically mean four of them are cheating you.

The problem is that “one CBM” is only a measurement of space. It does not tell you what is included in the shipping quote.

One forwarder may give you a rate that covers only the sea freight from China.

Another may include the China warehouse, export handling and freight.

A third may quote something closer to door-to-door delivery.

All three can advertise a price “per CBM” and still be selling different services.

So before comparing rates, you need to know what one CBM actually means, how it is calculated, and which charges are sitting outside the number you were shown.

What does one CBM mean? #

CBM means cubic metre.

It is a measurement of volume.

One cubic metre is a space measuring:

1 metre × 1 metre × 1 metre.

For sea groupage, where your goods share a container with cargo belonging to other importers, forwarders often charge according to the amount of container space your cartons occupy.

That is why CBM matters.

You are not buying a whole container.

You are buying part of one.

If your cartons occupy 2.4 cubic metres, the forwarder may charge you for 2.4 CBM, subject to whatever minimums and rounding rules they use.

This is different from air freight, where the price is usually based mainly on kilograms or chargeable weight.

Our shipping cost from China to Nigeria per kg guide explains that side of the calculation.

How do you calculate CBM? #

The formula is simple:

Length × width × height = CBM

But the measurements must be in metres.

Suppose one carton measures:

0.6 metres long
0.5 metres wide
0.4 metres high

The calculation is:

0.6 × 0.5 × 0.4 = 0.12 CBM

If you have ten identical cartons:

0.12 × 10 = 1.2 CBM

So your shipment occupies approximately 1.2 cubic metres.

If the supplier gives you measurements in centimetres, convert them first.

A carton measuring 60 cm × 50 cm × 40 cm is the same calculation:

0.60 × 0.50 × 0.40 = 0.12 CBM

Do not estimate this by looking at the cartons.

Ask the supplier for the packed dimensions, not the product dimensions.

A chair may look small when dismantled, but once the factory adds foam, cartons, wooden framing or protective packaging, the shipping volume can be much larger.

That extra space is what you pay for.

So how much is one CBM from China to Nigeria? #

There is no permanent answer.

CBM rates move.

They change with vessel space, fuel costs, the Chinese port, the Nigerian destination, the type of goods, the shipping season and the forwarder you are using.

A quote from Guangzhou may not match one from Yiwu.

A quote to Lagos may not match one that includes delivery to Aba or Kano.

And a cheap rate this month can become expensive next month.

That is why we do not recommend building your business around a single number you found on an old Instagram post.

The useful question is:

What does your CBM rate include?

If a forwarder quotes US$X per CBM, ask them to break that price down.

Does it include:

If the answer is no, ask what each missing part is expected to cost.

A low freight rate is not useful if the second bill destroys the saving.

Why do two companies quote different CBM prices? #

Because they may not be quoting the same route or the same service.

One company may load directly from Guangzhou.

Another may first move your goods from Yiwu to a warehouse elsewhere.

One may have its own regular consolidation containers.

Another may buy space from somebody else.

One quote may stop when the goods reach Lagos.

Another may include clearing.

Another may include delivery to your city.

There is also the type of cargo.

Ordinary clothing, furniture, electronics, batteries, liquids and regulated products do not all move under the same conditions.

Some goods need additional handling or documentation.

Some carriers will not accept certain cargo at all.

So when somebody tells you another forwarder is “cheaper per CBM,” make sure you are comparing the same thing.

Otherwise you are comparing one line from two completely different bills.

What is the minimum CBM charge? #

This catches small importers surprisingly often.

A forwarder may have a minimum chargeable volume.

For example, your cartons may physically measure less than the minimum amount the company is willing to invoice.

That means a shipment measuring 0.3 CBM might still be charged at the forwarder's minimum.

The exact minimum depends on the company and service.

Ask before sending goods to the warehouse.

Do not assume that because your goods occupy half a cubic metre you will automatically pay exactly half of the advertised one-CBM price.

Also ask how they handle rounding.

If your shipment measures 1.46 CBM, will they charge 1.46?

1.5?

Or 2
