DDP Shipping from China to Nigeria: Buyer Guide
DDP shipping from China to Nigeria can simplify buying stock when the seller takes responsibility for transport and import clearance. But before paying an "all-inclusive" quote, establish the delivery address, the clearing arrangement and the evidence you will receive.
A shipment delivered to a Lagos collection warehouse has a different scope from one delivered to your shop in Onitsha. Your written agreement should make that difference clear.
What does DDP shipping from China to Nigeria mean? #
DDP means Delivered Duty Paid. Under the ICC's Incoterms 2020 DDP rule, the seller arranges carriage, handles export, transit and import formalities, and pays the applicable import duties and taxes. Delivery normally occurs at the agreed destination, with the goods cleared for import and ready for unloading from the arriving vehicle.
The seller generally carries the transport risk until that delivery point. The buyer must still pay for the goods, provide necessary assistance and receive them.
Write the term precisely: DDP [full delivery address], Nigeria, Incoterms 2020. Put it in your purchase order for the Chinese supplier, alongside the goods, quantities and agreed delivery period.
If another quote uses FOB or CIF, compare the responsibilities using our FOB vs CIF guide.
Is DDP shipping the same as door-to-door delivery? #
"Door-to-door" describes a delivery service. DDP defines responsibilities between buyer and seller when incorporated into a sale contract. A forwarder's advertising label alone does not establish your supplier's contractual obligations.
Ask who promises delivery, who you pay and whose terms govern a loss or extra charge. Match the supplier's agreement with any separate forwarding contract.
For an illustrative example, both offers below involve Nigerian delivery:
- Offer A ends at the forwarder's Lagos warehouse, where you collect the cartons.
- Offer B ends at your specified shop address in Onitsha.
They cover different journeys. Before comparing prices, make both quotes end at the same address. If you need onward delivery, request its cost and responsibilities separately, as explained in our Nigerian haulage guide.
Under DDP, unloading is normally the buyer's responsibility. Check whether its cost is already included in the seller's carriage contract; the ICC's DAP and DDP explanation addresses this distinction.
Is DDP shipping legal in Nigeria? #
DDP is a recognised trade term, but a lawful shipment also needs a compliant operator, accurate declarations and the required product approvals.
On 12 January 2026, Nigeria Customs announced a DDP procedure specifically for courier companies. It requires an NCS licence, advance electronic manifests, customs declarations and payment of duties, VAT and other statutory levies before clearance.
That announcement concerns courier operations. It does not automatically validate every sea freight or forwarding business advertising DDP.
Before booking, request the operator's legal name, relevant licence details and the identity of the company handling declarations. Verify them through the relevant authority's official channels.
Compare shipping companies serving Nigeria on their documented responsibilities and ability to explain the clearance process.
What should a DDP shipping quote include? #
Send each provider the same product descriptions, quantities, values, carton measurements, gross weights and destination. Ask for a written quote covering:
- Collection point in China and the Nigerian delivery address.
- Air, sea or courier service, including any consolidation.
- Billing basis, minimum charge and measurement method.
- Freight, export handling and Nigerian clearance costs.
- Duties, taxes and levies included in the price.
- Final delivery, unloading, storage and any exclusions.
- Currency, exchange-rate basis, payment terms and quote validity.
- Estimated delivery period, tracking and claims procedure.
For air shipments, check whether the charge uses actual or volumetric weight. For sea cargo, request the measurement and minimum-charge rules.
A flat amount still needs a defined scope. Ask what could change the bill, who must approve an increase and what evidence supports it.
Compare the total expense to the same endpoint using your landed cost calculation. Include expenses you will pay after the provider's service ends.
What documents and customs evidence should you request? #
Agree the document package before dispatch. Request the supplier's commercial invoice, an accurate packing list, transport reference and written delivery terms.
Confirm which company will appear as importer or consignee, who will make the declaration, and which clearance and duty-payment records will identify your goods. In a consolidated shipment, ask how your cartons can be matched to the relevant consignment.
The 2026 courier procedure requires declarations supported by invoices, air waybills and packing lists. It also provides for proof of delivery on request.
Check the proposed HS code against the actual product. Reject requests to invent a lower value or describe commercial stock as something else.
DDP does not remove product compliance obligations. SON describes SONCAP as a pre-shipment conformity programme for regulated imports. Use our product certificate guide to identify the approvals to confirm before shipping.
Does DDP shipping include cargo insurance? #
DDP itself does not require the seller to purchase an insurance policy for the buyer. The ICC's explanation of DDP separates the seller's transport risk from an obligation to buy insurance.
Nigeria's insurance law also matters. Section 82 of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 requires import insurance to be placed with an insurer registered under the Act.
Ask who arranges compliant cover, which goods and journey it covers, and who can claim. Request the policy or certificate, insured value, exclusions, deductible and reporting deadline.
A promise to compensate you needs written terms too. Find out whether payment would reflect the invoice value or a stated limit. Our cargo insurance guide explains the questions to take to the insurer.
When is DDP shipping a good choice? #
DDP can suit a buyer who wants the seller to manage delivery and clearance, provided the seller can fulfil those obligations lawfully and the service scope is clear.
It is less attractive when nobody will identify the clearing operator, explain the declared goods or provide evidence of the agreed cover. Pause payment until those gaps are resolved.
Before dispatch, confirm product quality through inspection in China. At delivery, count cartons, photograph damage, compare the contents with the packing list and report discrepancies within the applicable claims deadline.
To request a comparable quote, prepare the product description, quantity, value, packed dimensions, weight and exact Nigerian destination. Use our China to Nigeria shipping page to start that enquiry.
The strongest DDP arrangement is one you can explain: who delivers, who clears, what you pay, where responsibility ends and what happens if something goes wrong.
