Volumetric Weight for China Shipping to Nigeria
Calculate volumetric weight for China shipping to Nigeria. Check carton sizes, chargeable weight, packing and the billing rules before accepting a quote.

Volumetric Weight for China Shipping to Nigeria
Volumetric weight for China shipping to Nigeria helps explain why your freight bill can show more kilograms than the goods weigh on a scale.
Your supplier says the cartons weigh 20 kg. The forwarder quotes a higher billable weight. Before paying, ask for the dimensions and calculation.
A bulky parcel takes up space even when its contents are light.
Check the packed size, gross weight and billing rule before comparing shipping prices per kilogram.
Why is the billed weight higher than the scale reading? #
Three different figures can appear in a shipping quotation.
Gross weight is the actual weight of the goods with their packaging and any relevant pallet or crate.
Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, converts the space occupied by the package into a weight equivalent.
Chargeable weight is the weight used to calculate the freight charge. For services using this comparison, the higher of gross and volumetric weight is the starting point, subject to the service's billing rules.
Flexport explains these distinctions in its chargeable-weight guide.
Light products in large cartons can be billed by volume. Dense products in compact cartons may be billed by gross weight.
Check whether the supplier gave you product-only weight or packed weight. Our packing-list guide explains how to record both.
How do you calculate volumetric weight? #
Use the formula specified by your carrier or forwarder:
Length x width x height in centimetres / agreed divisor = volumetric weight in kilograms.
Measure the finished package's outside dimensions. Include the packaging that will actually travel.
For an illustrative carton measuring 60 x 40 x 30 cm, with a gross weight of 8 kg, assume the quoted divisor is 5,000.
The calculation is:
60 x 40 x 30 / 5,000 = 14.4 kg.
Because 14.4 kg is higher than 8 kg, the volumetric figure becomes the weight basis before any applicable rounding or minimum charge.
DHL publishes this 5,000-divisor method in its weight and dimensions guidance.
Use our shipping-cost-per-kg guide to check what the quoted rate includes.
Should you divide by 5,000 or 6,000? #
Use the divisor stated for your booked service.
DHL Express's published method uses 5,000. Maersk's air-cargo guide describes 6,000 for general air cargo while noting that carrier calculations can differ.
The same 60 x 40 x 30 cm carton produces:
- 14.4 kg when divided by 5,000.
- 12 kg when divided by 6,000.
These are mathematical examples, not interchangeable billing options.
Also confirm how measurements and weights are rounded. FedEx's dimensional-weight guidance, for example, says to round dimensions up to the next centimetre.
Apply the rules for your actual shipment.
When comparing providers, check the service and billing method alongside the rate. Our shipping company guide explains their different roles.
How do you calculate chargeable weight for several cartons? #
Ask whether the comparison is made separately for each package or across the shipment.
DHL's published guidance says to calculate multiple packages separately.
Illustrative two-carton shipment
Assume a per-carton comparison and a divisor of 5,000.
Carton A
- Dimensions: 60 x 40 x 30 cm.
- Gross weight: 8 kg.
- Volumetric weight: 14.4 kg.
- Weight basis before rounding: 14.4 kg.
Carton B
- Dimensions: 40 x 25 x 20 cm.
- Gross weight: 12 kg.
- Volumetric weight: 4 kg.
- Weight basis before rounding: 12 kg.
The total is 26.4 kg before applicable rounding, although the cartons physically weigh 20 kg.
Under this assumed per-carton rule, comparing only the combined gross and combined volumetric weights would give the wrong result.
For volumetric weight for China shipping to Nigeria, keep a separate measurement record for each carton. Ask the warehouse to identify every package using your customer or warehouse reference.
Can you reduce volumetric weight without damaging the goods? #
Ask the supplier or warehouse to review packing before dispatch.
Practical checks include:
- Removing unnecessary empty space while retaining suitable protection.
- Choosing cartons that fit the products.
- Checking whether retail boxes must remain intact for resale.
- Confirming whether a pallet or crate is required.
- Measuring and weighing again after repacking.
DHL's packing guidance discusses selecting appropriately sized packaging.
For example, reducing Carton A to 60 x 40 x 20 cm gives a volumetric weight of 9.6 kg at a divisor of 5,000. If gross weight remains 8 kg, the weight basis falls from 14.4 kg to 9.6 kg before rounding.
That assumes the smaller package still protects the goods properly.
If you arrange quality inspection in China, include packing and carton measurements in the inspection brief.
Read our order-consolidation guide when several suppliers are involved. Request final measurements after repacking rather than assuming consolidation will reduce the bill.
Is volumetric weight the same as CBM? #
CBM means cubic metres. It measures volume, not physical weight.
Using dimensions in centimetres:
Length x width x height / 1,000,000 = CBM.
Our original Carton A occupies 0.072 CBM. Carton B occupies 0.020 CBM. Together, they occupy 0.092 CBM before any additional packing.
Volumetric weight converts that space into a weight equivalent using the service's divisor and calculation method.
Sea freight uses its own pricing arrangements. Do not apply an air-freight divisor to a sea quote without checking its basis.
Our cost-per-CBM guide explains what to ask about volume-based sea freight.

What should you ask your forwarder before paying? #
Request a written breakdown showing:
- Final outside dimensions and gross weight for each package.
- The divisor and measurement units used.
- Whether the calculation is per package or per shipment.
- Dimension and weight rounding rules.
- Any minimum billable weight or minimum shipment charge.
- The quoted rate, currency and separate fees.
- What customs clearance and local delivery arrangements are included.
Ask for scale and measuring-tape photos if the warehouse figures differ from the supplier's records.
