How to Combine Orders from China to Nigeria
Learn how to combine orders from China to Nigeria, check supplier deliveries, compare consolidation costs and arrange shipping without missing cartons.

To combine orders from China to Nigeria, arrange for your suppliers to deliver their goods to a receiving warehouse, then ask your forwarder to prepare the accepted orders for onward shipment.
This is called cargo consolidation. It can help when you buy bags from one supplier, packaging from another and accessories from a third.
The problem usually starts when nobody has a complete list. One seller sends two cartons, another splits an order into three deliveries, and the warehouse dispatches before the last parcel arrives.
Plan the batch, identify every supplier delivery and approve what will actually leave China.
What does it mean to consolidate orders from China? #
Consolidation means bringing separate deliveries together for a planned shipment.
Your forwarder may keep the original cartons, repack compatible items or prepare a pallet or container load. The arrangement depends on the products, packaging and transport service.
Maersk's warehousing guide describes consolidation centres that combine goods before export.
You can ask a forwarder to consolidate suitable purchases from different suppliers or platforms. Confirm acceptance before directing the sellers to its warehouse.
Combining your own supplier orders is different from sharing a container with other buyers. Your consolidated cargo might still travel by air freight or as part of a shared sea shipment.
You do not need to buy a full container just to bring several purchases together.
Start with our China warehouse address guide for Nigerian buyers. If you are still placing orders, read how to buy from Alibaba in Nigeria.
Which goods should you combine or ship separately? #
Group orders around a suitable shipping method and a realistic arrival deadline.
Goods that are ready around the same time, accepted on the same route and going to the same Nigerian destination are easier to plan together.
Ask the forwarder to review the products before the sellers dispatch. Give accurate descriptions, product photos and information about batteries, liquids or other special handling needs.
Read our guide to shipping batteries from China if your purchases include power banks or battery-powered products.
Also consider the physical packing:
- Heavy cartons may need separate handling from delicate goods.
- Liquids need suitable containment and protection.
- Handbags and shoes may need protection against crushing.
- Retail boxes may be important to your resale price.
- Items requiring different shipping arrangements may need separate batches.
Suitable goods can travel in the same shipment while remaining in separate protective cartons.
For example, do not remove all protective packaging from a fragile product simply to fit it into a box with clothing.
If one order is urgent, compare sending it separately with holding the entire batch.
Plan the shipment before your suppliers dispatch #
Create one order list that you and the warehouse can both use.
For every supplier, record:
- Seller name and order reference.
- Product description and quantity.
- Expected number of cartons.
- Estimated packed weight and dimensions.
- Expected dispatch date.
- Domestic courier and tracking number once shipped.
- Warehouse customer code or shipping mark.
Give each order a simple reference, such as BAG-01 or PACK-02, while retaining the customer mark required by the warehouse.
A seller may split one purchase into several parcels. Ask whether the tracking number covers the full order or only part of it.
Send all suppliers the same confirmed receiving address and the exact labelling instructions. Ask them to photograph the marked cartons before dispatch.
For platform-specific steps, see how to ship goods from 1688 to Nigeria.
Agree the batch deadline with your forwarder. Specify which orders to wait for and who must authorise a partial shipment.
You can send this instruction:
Please hold my received goods until the orders on the attached list have been checked. If any supplier delivery is missing or late, contact me before dispatch. Send the received carton count, packing proposal, final weight or volume and complete quotation for my approval.
Ask the warehouse to acknowledge the instruction.
Check every supplier delivery before combining cartons #
Match each warehouse arrival to your order list.
A courier's "delivered" update should be followed by a receiving record showing the supplier reference, tracking number, carton count and your customer mark.
If you expected six cartons but only five were recorded, resolve the difference before repacking makes the original deliveries harder to trace.
Ask what the receiving service actually checks. Recording sealed cartons is different from opening them and counting every product.
Arrange the checks your order needs:
- Compare the items with your purchase specification.
- Count units where agreed.
- Record visible damage or wet packaging.
- Separate wrong items before consolidation.
- Photograph goods before and after repacking.
For testing, sample comparison or a more detailed product check, use our quality inspection in China guide.
Keep a record of which products enter each final carton.
If eight incoming cartons become five outgoing cartons, ask for an updated packing record. It should show the final carton numbers, contents, quantities, weight and dimensions as appropriate.
Keep each supplier's invoice and order records too. Combining the freight does not merge your separate purchases into one supplier order.
Our proforma invoice guide explains the order details to confirm before buying.
Will consolidation reduce your shipping cost? #
It can, but the final saving depends on the full arrangement.
Combining orders may reduce repeated minimum charges or improve how the goods are packed. Extra domestic transport, storage, handling and repacking can also increase the bill.
Ask for a comparison using the same destination, shipping method and service inclusions.
For air freight and courier services, request the final gross weight, dimensions and chargeable weight. Removing empty space may help, but placing goods in one oversized carton can increase the volume.
DHL's chargeable-weight explanation shows why both physical weight and volume matter. Confirm your forwarder's calculation and minimum charges.
For sea freight, obtain the final volume in cubic metres, usually called CBM, and ask how weight, minimum charges and packing affect the quotation.
Our guides explain shipping cost per kg and shipping cost per CBM.
Illustration only, using assumed costs:
- Sending the orders separately: N180,000.
- Combined international freight: N120,000.
- Additional receiving and repacking: N15,000.
- Additional transport within China: N10,000.
- Total for the combined option: N145,000.
- Difference: N35,000.
This comparison assumes the same costs outside these listed items. Add any storage, documentation, clearance or onward delivery differences before deciding.
Record the result in your landed cost calculation.
How do you avoid delays and unexpected charges? #
Give the consolidation plan a clear stopping point.
Ask when free storage ends, how storage is calculated and whether the shipping rate can change while the warehouse waits for another seller.
If the last supplier is late, request two options: the cost of waiting and the cost of sending the ready goods now.
Consider your Nigerian selling deadline too. Saving on freight may offer little benefit if your customers need the stock before the batch can arrive.
Confirm these points in writing:
- The dispatch cut-off and what it covers.
- The expected shipping schedule.
- Whether receiving is charged per delivery or carton.
- The repacking and protective-packing fees.
- Any minimum freight or handling charge.
- What happens if an order is rejected for the chosen route.
- Whether moving the goods to another forwarder attracts a fee.
Treat transit estimates separately from the time needed to collect all supplier orders.
If you want cover for loss or damage, ask about the insured value, exclusions and claims process. Read our cargo insurance guide for Nigerian imports.
Approve the final shipment and Nigerian delivery #
Before dispatch, ask for a final shipment summary.
Check the products, final carton count, packing photos, gross weight, dimensions or CBM, shipping method and agreed charges.
Confirm the documents required for the goods with your forwarder and clearing agent. Different product types may need different supporting documents even when they travel together.
Our guide to the certificate your product needs can help you identify the questions to ask.
Confirm where the shipment will finish.
If the quotation ends at a Lagos collection point, ask about delivery to your shop in Aba, Onitsha, Kano or Port Harcourt. Give the final address and contact person before booking the onward movement.
Keep the final packing record so you can check the cartons and contents when the goods arrive. Report shortages or damage promptly with photos and the shipment reference.
