How to Buy Clothes from China and Ship to Nigeria: Guangzhou Markets, Factories & Import Rules

If you want to buy clothes from China and ship them to Nigeria, the first question is not Alibaba or Guangzhou.

It is quantity.

Are you testing a new style with 10, 20 or 50 pieces?

Or are you buying hundreds or thousands of pieces of something you already know will sell?

For small quantities, Guangzhou's clothing wholesale markets are usually the easier route.

For repeat styles, private label and larger quantities, buying directly from a Chinese clothing manufacturer can give you more control over price, sizing, fabric and branding.

But clothing also has one major Nigerian complication:

Do not assume every type of textile is treated the same by Customs.

Finished new garments, fabrics, African prints and second-hand clothing can fall under different HS codes and import rules.

This guide explains how Nigerian fashion retailers, boutique owners and wholesalers can source clothing from China without buying the wrong goods, choosing the wrong market or discovering an import problem after shipment.

The two ways to buy clothes from China #

There are two basic sourcing routes.

Route 1: Buy ready-made clothes from a wholesale market #

Best when:

You choose garments that already exist, negotiate the quantity and price, and send them to your China warehouse or freight forwarder.

Route 2: Buy directly from a clothing factory #

Best when:

The factory produces specifically for your order.

That takes longer, but you control much more of the product.

Best Guangzhou clothing markets for Nigerian buyers #

Guangzhou remains one of China's most useful cities for clothing buyers because several large garment wholesale districts sit within the city.

You do not need to visit every market.

Go to the one that matches the customer you sell to.

Shahe Clothing Wholesale Market #

Best for: affordable women's fashion, men's casual clothing, jeans and fast-moving mass-market styles.

Shahe operates differently from a normal shopping centre.

The trade starts very early.

Many wholesalers are already doing business around 5am, and much of the serious activity is finished before lunchtime.

If you arrive in the afternoon expecting a full market day, you may have missed the best part.

Shahe suits Nigerian traders looking for:

The major advantage is price.

The disadvantage is that quality can vary sharply between sellers.

Do not judge a product only from the first sample hanging in front of the stall.

Check the actual pieces you are buying.

Shisanhang #

Best for: fast fashion, women's clothing, trendy styles, knitwear and smaller wholesale purchases.

Shisanhang is useful when you want styles that are moving quickly rather than committing to a large factory production run.

Different buildings within the district have different price and quality levels.

That makes it particularly useful for boutique owners who want to compare several suppliers in one morning.

Opening hours vary by building, but this is also a market you should visit early rather than late.

Guangzhou Railway Station clothing cluster #

Around Guangzhou Railway Station you will find major markets including:

Baima generally sits higher in the market than Shahe.

You will find more established brands, showrooms and mid-to-higher-end garments.

It is useful when your customer cares more about finishing and presentation than simply getting the cheapest possible item.

Unlike Shahe, these markets operate on more conventional daytime trading hours.

Shijing and Baiyun clothing areas #

Baiyun has several clothing, stock, denim and garment trading areas that can be useful for buyers looking beyond the main tourist-facing wholesale districts.

This is also where having somebody who already knows Guangzhou becomes more valuable.

The cheapest market is not automatically the best market.

The right market depends on whether you sell:

Our Guangzhou wholesale markets guide covers the main markets, locations, metro access and practical buying routes.

How many clothes do you have to buy in Guangzhou? #

There is no single Guangzhou clothing MOQ.

That is important.

Some wholesalers may sell a small mixed order.

Others may ask you to take a minimum number per design or colour.

A seller may quote one price for:

The more you take of the same style, the better the price usually becomes.

Instead of asking:

“What is your minimum?”

ask:

“What is the price for 10, 30 and 100 pieces of this style?”

That tells you far more.

If you are buying many styles in small quantities, the market route can make more sense than forcing a factory order.

Can you put your own label on Guangzhou market clothes? #

Sometimes.

But there are different levels of private label.

Level 1: Existing garment + your label #

The garment already exists.

The supplier removes or replaces the original label and adds yours.

This is the easiest route.

Level 2: Existing design + your changes #

You keep the basic design but change things such as:

MOQ normally increases.

Level 3: Fully custom clothing #

You supply your own:

Now you are dealing with garment manufacturing rather than simply wholesale buying.

That is where a factory becomes more appropriate.

How to buy clothes directly from a Chinese factory #

Once you know a product sells, buying directly from the manufacturer can make sense.

But do not start by asking:

“How much for 1,000 T-shirts?”

A factory cannot price a T-shirt properly without knowing what T-shirt you mean.

Send a specification.

Include:

Then request a sample.

Only after approving the sample should bulk production begin.

Our samples from China guide explains how to use a sample as the production reference.

How much is the MOQ for clothing factories in China? #

There is no universal MOQ.

Some modern small-batch manufacturers specialise in startup fashion brands and may accept relatively small runs.

Other factories want several hundred pieces per style.

Large production facilities may want considerably more.

MOQ depends on:

The biggest mistake is assuming MOQ means:

300 clothes in any combination you want.

A factory may actually mean:

300 pieces per style

or:

300 pieces per colour

Those are very different orders.

Before paying, ask:

“Is your MOQ per order, per design or per colour?”

Our minimum order quantity guide explains how Chinese MOQs work and what you can realistically negotiate.

Best clothing manufacturing cities in China #

Guangzhou is excellent for sourcing, but China does not manufacture every type of clothing in one city.

Different areas specialise.

Humen, Dongguan #

Humen is one of Guangdong's major clothing manufacturing centres.

It has thousands of garment-related businesses and is useful for:

It is particularly convenient if you are already sourcing in Guangzhou because Dongguan is nearby.

Shishi, Fujian #

Shishi has a large textile and clothing manufacturing chain.

It is particularly strong in areas such as:

Do not treat it as another Guangzhou suburb.

It is in Fujian Province and normally requires a separate sourcing trip or somebody acting for you there.

Zhili, Huzhou #

If you are importing children's clothing, Zhili is one of the most important manufacturing clusters to know.

The town has thousands of businesses connected to children's garments, production and e-commerce.

For somebody building a serious children's-wear business in Nigeria, going directly to the cluster can make more sense than buying every order through a Guangzhou middleman.

Puyuan, Tongxiang #

Puyuan is particularly strong in:

It is in Zhejiang Province, not Guangzhou.

It becomes relevant when knitwear is a major part of what you sell.

Pinghu #

Pinghu is known for:

For most Nigerian retailers, this is a specialised category rather than a first sourcing destination.

But it matters if you sell into colder markets or export beyond Nigeria.

Haining #

Haining is closely associated with China's leather-fashion industry.

Look there for:

If you want a wider breakdown of China's manufacturing clusters, see which Chinese city makes what.

Guangzhou market or factory: which is cheaper? #

The factory is not automatically cheaper.

That sounds strange, but it matters.

Suppose a wholesaler already produced 20,000 dresses for the domestic market.

You want 30.

The wholesaler can sell 30 pieces immediately.

A factory producing your custom 30-piece order may need to:

Your custom 30 pieces can therefore cost more.

The factory advantage becomes stronger when you need repeat quantities of the same product.

That is why a sensible progression is often:

Market stock → test sales → identify winner → sample → factory production → repeat order

Do not manufacture 1,000 pieces just because the unit price looks attractive.

First prove that Nigerians want the style.

Buying clothes from 1688, Alibaba or directly in China #

You can also source clothing online.

Alibaba #

Better suited to international buyers and factory enquiries.

Useful for:

1688 #

Useful for accessing China's domestic wholesale supply.

Prices can be attractive, but many sellers expect:

That is why many Nigerian buyers use a purchasing or sourcing agent.

Physical Guangzhou markets #

Nigeria import rules for clothes from China #

This is the section to check before paying the supplier.

Nigeria does not treat every textile product identically.

Your exact HS classification matters.

The 2026 Customs fiscal measures include revised tariff and import-prohibition schedules.

That means you should not rely on an old WhatsApp list saying simply:

“Clothes are allowed.”

or:

“Textiles are banned.”

Both statements are too broad.

Before shipping a commercial quantity, give your clearing agent an exact description of the product and get the HS code checked against the current Customs schedule.

Can you import new clothes into Nigeria? #

Many new garment categories are covered by normal Customs tariff classifications, but the exact treatment depends on the HS code and the current prohibition schedule.

For example, different tariff lines exist for:

Many apparel tariff lines in the Common External Tariff carry an import duty around 20%, with 7.5% VAT appearing on numerous garment classifications.

But do not use those percentages as the landed cost for every piece of clothing.

Your exact HS code determines the applicable treatment.

There may also be other Customs charges or adjustments applicable to your transaction.

Get the code before the container moves.

Can you import used clothes or okrika into Nigeria? #

Second-hand clothing is prohibited.

Nigeria Customs lists second-hand clothing among goods whose importation is absolutely prohibited.

That means a commercial shipment of used clothing is not simply a normal garment import with a higher duty.

It is prohibited cargo.

Do not confuse:

New factory surplus clothing

with:

Used clothing.

They are not the same thing.

If somebody in China offers you a container described as:

used clothes, second-hand clothes, charity clothing or worn garments

do not ship it to Nigeria expecting normal Customs clearance.

What about Ankara and textile fabrics? #

Fabric needs its own check.

Do not assume that because finished new garments can be classified for import, every type of fabric is automatically treated the same way.

Nigeria has historically maintained restrictions on specific textile categories, including particular printed fabrics.

Before buying fabric by the roll, identify:

and have the classification checked against the current 2026 Customs rules.

This is especially important if you are buying:

For sourcing fabric inside China, our Keqiao textile market guide covers one of China's largest textile sourcing centres.

Is Nigeria banning imported textiles in 2026? #

In June 2026, the Nigerian Senate adopted a resolution calling on the Federal Government to impose a wider ban on imported textile materials as part of efforts to revive domestic textile manufacturing.

That was a Senate resolution and policy proposal, not by itself a new Customs prohibition.

Nigeria Customs subsequently implemented the Federal Government's 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments, including a revised import-prohibition schedule.

For an importer, that distinction matters.

Do not make a shipment decision from a newspaper headline.

Check the current Customs prohibition list and the exact HS code that applies to your goods.

If the government changes the applicable import rules later, the Customs classification is what affects your shipment.

Can you get FX for importing clothes into Nigeria? #

Clothes and woven fabrics were previously among the 43 categories restricted from accessing foreign exchange through the official market.

The Central Bank of Nigeria removed that restriction in October 2023.

That removal did not make every textile automatically importable.

FX eligibility and Customs import legality are separate questions.

For commercial imports requiring Form M, our Form M Nigeria import guide explains the banking and documentation process.

The five things that ruin clothing orders #

Clothing looks simple until 800 pieces arrive in Nigeria with the same problem.

These are the details to control.

1. Size #

Never approve a garment order using only:

S, M, L, XL.

One factory's XL can be another factory's L.

Give the manufacturer an actual size chart in centimetres.

For example:

If your target customer is Nigerian, fit the garment for that customer.

Do not simply accept the supplier's domestic Chinese sizing.

2. Fabric weight #

Two T-shirts can look almost identical in photographs and feel completely different in your hand.

For relevant fabrics, specify the GSM — grams per square metre.

For example:

180 GSM cotton

is a much clearer instruction than:

good quality cotton.

3. Fabric composition #

Specify:

100% cotton

or:

95% cotton / 5% elastane

rather than simply writing:

cotton material.

Small differences affect:

4. Colour #

Colour photographs on WhatsApp are not reliable enough for serious production.

For custom-dyed fabric, approve a physical colour reference or lab dip where appropriate.

Bulk dye lots can vary.

If colour consistency matters, write it into the specification.

5. Stitching and measurements #

A garment can use the correct fabric and still be bad.

Inspection should check:

Our quality inspection in China guide explains what to check before paying the final balance.

Be careful with branded clothing #

A Chinese supplier telling you:

“Original Nike factory.”

does not give you the right to import Nike-branded goods.

The same applies to other protected brands.

If you do not have authorisation to trade the branded product, counterfeit or infringing goods can create Customs and intellectual-property problems.

For your own private label:

Do not build your business around somebody else's trademark because a supplier says it is safe.

Check a clothing factory before paying #

Do not assume every seller calling itself a factory owns production equipment.

Many are trading companies.

That is not automatically bad.

A good trading company can be useful.

You simply need to know who you are dealing with.

Before placing a significant production order, check:

Our Chinese supplier checking guide explains the verification process.

Also read our Chinese supplier scams guide before sending a large deposit.

How to pay a Chinese clothing supplier from Nigeria #

For a factory order, the payment structure is often different from buying ready stock.

A typical production order may involve:

Deposit → production → inspection → balance → shipment

The exact percentages depend on the supplier and order.

Do not release the final payment blindly because the supplier says:

“Goods finished.”

For an important order, verify first.

And make sure the company receiving the money matches the supplier you have checked.

Our guide on how to pay a Chinese supplier from Nigeria covers the main payment routes.

How to ship clothes from China to Nigeria #

Clothing creates a particular shipping problem.

It may not be very heavy.

But it occupies space.

That means large clothing orders are often affected heavily by CBM — cubic metres.

Air freight #

Makes more sense for:

Sea freight #

Usually makes more sense as the shipment becomes larger.

It is particularly useful for:

Before comparing shipping quotes, ask for:

Our cost per CBM from China to Nigeria guide explains how volume affects the freight bill.

How to calculate whether the clothes will actually make money in Nigeria #

Do not calculate profit from the Chinese unit price.

Calculate from the landed cost.

If one dress costs ¥45 at the supplier, your Nigerian cost is not simply ¥45 converted to naira.

Include:

Product cost

= Landed cost

Then compare that number with what the garment can realistically sell for in your market.

The cheapest dress in Guangzhou can still be a bad business if freight and import costs destroy the margin.

The smartest route for a new Nigerian clothing importer #

If you are starting small:

Buy several styles in small quantities.

Do not begin by manufacturing hundreds of pieces because the factory price looks cheap.

Watch what sells.

Then reorder the winners.

Once you know that one dress, shirt, trouser or children's set sells consistently, approach the manufacturer for:

That is when direct factory sourcing becomes powerful.

A practical progression is:

10–50 pieces to test → identify the winner → approve a sample → produce a larger batch → inspect → ship → repeat

It protects your cash while you learn what your customers actually want.

Market or factory? Use this rule #

Choose a Guangzhou wholesale market when you want variety.

Choose a factory when you want volume and control.

If you need 20 different styles in small quantities, the market is usually more practical.

If you need 1,000 pieces of the same proven style with your own sizing and brand, talk to the manufacturer.

And if you are buying from several markets or factories and need somebody in China to receive, inspect and consolidate everything, that is where a sourcing agent becomes useful.

Tell the ChinaBridge desk:

and the first job should be deciding the right sourcing route before anybody asks you to pay for an order.
