Which Chinese city makes what: the Nigerian buyer's map

Which Chinese city makes what, for the goods Nigerians buy: Yiwu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Keqiao, Xuchang and Jinjiang, and why the right city cuts the price.

Guide Where China Makes What Updated 13 min read
A hand drawn or printed map of China on a desk with pins in Guangzhou, Yiwu, Shenzhen, Foshan and Xuchang, a notebook beside it

China does not manufacture every product evenly across the country.

It manufactures in clusters.

One town becomes known for socks.

Another for lighting.

Another for wigs.

Another for toys.

Around the factories come the:

raw-material suppliers + component makers + mould shops + packaging companies + testing labs + warehouses + freight companies.

That is why knowing the right city matters.

But do not take the idea too literally.

A phone can contain components from Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou and several other cities. A Guangzhou wholesaler may sell a bag made in Shiling. A Yiwu booth may sell a toy made in Chenghai.

So this is not:

“the only city in China where this product is made.”

It is:

“the Chinese cluster you should know if this product becomes important to your business.”

Why does the Chinese city matter? #

Because industrial clusters give a buyer more competition in a smaller area.

Take lighting.

Guzhen in Zhongshan has more than 20,000 lighting manufacturers and related businesses, while Zhongshan government sources put the wider cluster at roughly half of global lighting supply and around 70% of China's domestic market. (zs.gov.cn)

That means when you need:

LED drivers,

housings,

chandeliers,

commercial lighting,

outdoor lights,

smart lighting,

or customised fittings,

you are not negotiating with one lonely factory.

You are standing inside the supply chain.

The same principle appears in Xuchang, where more than 4,000 hair-related companies operate and current Henan government reporting says the cluster produces at least six out of every ten wigs sold globally.

That concentration can mean:

more suppliers + faster sampling + easier price comparison + more specialised components + better access to factories.

But factory-direct is not automatically cheaper for every order.

If you only need two cartons, a wholesaler holding stock may give you a better practical deal than a factory demanding an MOQ of 5,000 pieces.

The cluster becomes most valuable when your volume grows.

The China sourcing map #

What you buy City or cluster to know Why it matters
Mixed small goods — jewellery, accessories, gifts, stationery, umbrellas, kitchen items, general merchandise Yiwu, Zhejiang Yiwu is primarily an enormous wholesale and distribution ecosystem rather than the factory for everything it sells. Its official market platform lists about 2.1 million product types across roughly 80,000 booths.
Clothing and fashion wholesale Guangzhou, Guangdong Best treated as a wholesale-market and sourcing hub. It is particularly useful when you want to compare many fashion suppliers in smaller quantities before going deeper into the manufacturing clusters.
Electronic components, accessories, prototyping Shenzhen, Guangdong Huaqiangbei alone has 22 specialist electronics markets and over one million types of electronic components; Shenzhen remains a major computer, phone, drone and electronics manufacturing centre.
Furniture, ceramics, sanitary ware and home products Foshan, Guangdong Foshan has deep manufacturing in ceramics, home/furniture products and related building-material supply chains; Shunde is also strong in smart/home appliances.
Lighting and LED products Guzhen, Zhongshan, Guangdong One of the world's deepest lighting clusters, covering decorative, commercial, outdoor and smart lighting.
Fabric and textile by the roll Keqiao, Shaoxing, Zhejiang China Textile City has around 38,000 vendors and an entire textile chain covering fibre, weaving, dyeing, printing, garments and industrial fabrics.
Human hair, wigs, extensions and hairpieces Xuchang, Henan More than 4,000 hair-product companies form one of the world's dominant wig manufacturing clusters.
Sports shoes and sportswear supply chain Jinjiang / Quanzhou, Fujian Jinjiang has a complete footwear and sportswear chain, from materials and machinery to finished footwear and major Chinese sports brands.
Fashion shoes and leather footwear Wenzhou, Zhejiang Wenzhou remains a major footwear and leather-products manufacturing centre and in 2025 its footwear cluster was recognised as having reached world-class cluster development level.
Bags and luggage Shiling, Huadu, Guangzhou Shiling has a dense leather-goods and luggage ecosystem; Huadu government describes a complete chain covering fashion bags, functional bags, brands and OEM production.
Toys Chenghai, Shantou, Guangdong Chenghai is one of China's strongest toy-manufacturing clusters. Its 2025 industry report counted about 68,000 toy production/business entities and roughly one-third of global plastic-toy production capacity.
Socks and hosiery Datang, Zhuji, Zhejiang Current Zhejiang reporting puts Datang/Zhuji at more than 25 billion pairs annually, around 70% of Chinese production and roughly one-third of global output.
Hardware, power tools, metal doors and kitchen hardware Yongkang, Zhejiang Yongkang's core manufacturing cluster covers power tools, household doors, appliances, kitchenware and other hardware industries.
Switches, breakers and low-voltage electrical equipment Liushi / Yueqing, Zhejiang Liushi is described by Zhejiang's government as a leading Chinese production hub for low-voltage electrical products, with manufacturers such as CHINT and Delixi in the wider Yueqing cluster.
Locks and smart locks Xiaolan, Zhongshan, Guangdong Xiaolan has more than 200 smart-lock manufacturers and thousands of supporting businesses; the cluster is a major Chinese export base for locks.
Spectacle lenses and eyewear Danyang, Jiangsu Danyang produces more than 400 million pairs of lenses annually, representing roughly 70% of Chinese lens output and around half of global production by current government reporting.
Sweaters and knitwear Puyuan, Tongxiang, Zhejiang Puyuan has a complete knitwear chain covering weaving, dyeing, manufacturing, logistics and wholesale distribution.
Small home appliances Cixi/Ningbo, Zhejiang; Shunde/Foshan, Guangdong Cixi has more than 2,000 home-appliance manufacturers and a very dense component supply chain; Shunde is another major smart-home-appliance cluster.
Solar panels and PV equipment Changzhou, Jiangsu Changzhou has a complete photovoltaic chain covering wafers, cells, modules, equipment and system integration, and its PV cluster is now part of a national advanced-manufacturing cluster.
Lithium batteries and energy-storage cells Ningde, Fujian Ningde is one of the world's largest lithium-battery clusters and home to CATL, with a chain covering materials, cells, packs, equipment and recycling.
Motorcycles and motorcycle components Chongqing Chongqing produced about 7.86 million motorcycles in 2025 and has hundreds of component suppliers around its motorcycle manufacturing base.

That table tells you where to start.

It does not mean you should automatically fly to every city.

Yiwu is a market city before it is your factory city #

This distinction is important.

Yiwu is one of the best places in China for a Nigerian trader who needs:

30 products from 30 suppliers in one shipment.

You can source jewellery, toys, stationery, accessories, kitchen items, gifts and thousands of other lines without crossing China.

The official Yiwu market now includes six International Trade Market districts and millions of product varieties.

But the item on the booth may have been manufactured somewhere else.

The toy might come from Chenghai.

The sock might come from Datang.

The appliance might come from Cixi.

The bag might come from Shiling.

That is not a problem when you need one or five cartons.

It becomes relevant when you start buying the product in serious volume.

Read our Yiwu market guide.

Guangzhou is your front door to South China #

Guangzhou works differently.

For many Nigerian buyers, it is the easiest city from which to learn the China supply chain.

You have wholesale markets.

The Canton Fair.

Freight companies.

African trading communities.

And several major manufacturing clusters around the Pearl River Delta.

From the Guangzhou area you can reach:

Foshan — furniture, ceramics, appliances

Shiling/Huadu — bags and leather goods

Zhongshan/Guzhen — lighting

Zhongshan/Xiaolan — locks

Dongguan — manufacturing across electronics, footwear, components and many OEM categories

Shenzhen — electronics

That makes Guangzhou an excellent base.

It does not mean Guangzhou itself manufactures everything sold there.

Use our Guangzhou wholesale market guide.

Shenzhen: go there when the product becomes technical #

Huaqiangbei is not just a place to buy phones.

It is useful because a buyer can find:

components

PCBs

screens

connectors

cables

sensors

chips

accessories

small electronic finished products

within a concentrated area.

Shenzhen government describes Huaqiangbei as a 1.45-square-kilometre electronics district containing 22 specialised markets and more than one million component types.

For somebody building or customising an electronic product, that density matters.

But for a container of a mature finished product, do not assume a Huaqiangbei shop is the factory.

Ask where production occurs.

Use our Shenzhen electronics market guide.

Foshan: furniture is only part of it #

A Nigerian buyer hears Foshan and thinks:

sofa.

The wider Foshan industrial base is much broader.

It includes:

Shunde, within Foshan, is particularly important for appliances and modern home manufacturing.

So a buyer furnishing:

hotels

apartments

offices

or importing building finishes can combine several categories in the same wider sourcing trip.

Use our Foshan furniture market guide.

Guzhen is where lighting buyers stop shopping randomly #

If lighting becomes one of your main products, learn Guzhen.

The town's industry now extends far beyond decorative chandeliers.

It includes:

LED bulbs

drivers

commercial lights

outdoor lights

smart lighting

solar-related lighting

fixtures

lighting components

and production machinery.

The 2025 Guzhen International Lighting Fair connected more than 3,600 businesses across a combined exhibition area exceeding 1.5 million square metres.

That is what a real industrial cluster looks like.

Keqiao for fabric, not Guangzhou forever #

Guangzhou is useful for fabric.

But if fabric becomes your actual business, learn Keqiao.

China Textile City recorded about RMB401 billion in transactions in 2024, and the surrounding supply chain extends from polyester and spinning through weaving, printing, dyeing and finished textiles.

That is where the advantage becomes obvious for somebody buying:

lace

polyester

curtain material

uniform fabric

lining

printed fabric

by serious volume.

Use our Keqiao textile market guide.

Xuchang matters if hair becomes your business #

Guangzhou has plenty of hair showrooms.

But Xuchang is the cluster behind much of that trade.

Henan government reporting in 2026 says Xuchang has more than 4,000 wig-related businesses, directly supports close to 300,000 jobs and accounts for at least six out of ten wigs sold globally.

That does not mean every bundle of human hair originates in Henan.

Raw hair is sourced internationally.

The cluster's strength is in:

processing + sorting + colouring + wig making + synthetic fibres + extensions + packaging + export.

If you sell a few cartons, Guangzhou can be easier.

If hair becomes your main category, learn Xuchang.

See our human hair from China guide.

Jinjiang for sports shoes #

If you want serious sports footwear manufacturing, Jinjiang and the wider Quanzhou area deserve more attention than a general wholesale market.

The cluster covers:

shoe materials

soles

fabrics

machinery

finished footwear

sportswear

and brand development.

Jinjiang government describes it as one of China's major complete shoe-and-clothing manufacturing bases.

For fashion/leather footwear, Wenzhou is another major cluster.

Use our China wholesale shoes guide.

Chenghai if toys become serious volume #

Yiwu is excellent for comparing toys in smaller quantities.

But Chenghai in Shantou is where you start looking once you need factory depth.

Shantou's 2025 industry report says Chenghai has about 68,000 toy production and business entities and accounts for roughly one-third of global plastic-toy production capacity.

That includes:

building blocks

remote-control toys

educational toys

baby toys

plastic toys

electronic toys

and the components that feed them.

For container-level toy sourcing, that matters.

Datang if you are buying socks by the container #

Yiwu sells socks.

Datang makes socks at industrial scale.

Current Zhejiang reporting puts Zhuji's hosiery output at more than 25 billion pairs annually, roughly one-third of world output.

So:

20 mixed cartons of socks?

Yiwu may be convenient.

One million pairs under your own brand?

Start looking at Datang.

That is how this map should be used.

When should you leave the wholesale market and go to the cluster? #

Use this rule.

Stay in the market when: #

you are testing the product,

you need small quantities,

you want many SKUs,

you do not yet know which style sells,

you need ready stock.

Go toward the factory cluster when: #

you reorder constantly,

you buy by container,

you need private label,

you need your own specification,

you need custom packaging,

you need certification support,

you need a lower manufacturing price.

The cluster is not automatically the right place for your first carton.

It is often the right place for your tenth container.

Regulated goods make the manufacturer more important #

There is another reason to know where the product is actually made.

Nigeria may require conformity documents.

For SONCAP-regulated goods, SON says the Product Certificate is used for Form M, while the SONCAP Certificate is required for Customs clearance, and compliance is verified before shipment.

That does not mean a market trader can never sell you a compliant product.

A competent exporter or trader can work with the manufacturer and certification body.

But you need a traceable supply chain.

For:

electrical goods

lighting

appliances

building products

certain machinery

do not ask only:

“How much?”

Ask:

“Who manufactures this, and can this product meet Nigerian conformity requirements?”

That question should come before the deposit.

What this map does not tell you #

It does not tell you whether Nigeria will allow the product in.

That has to be checked separately.

Nigeria implemented revised 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures, including a revised Import Prohibition List, National List and Import Adjustment Tax schedules.

So do not use the old rule:

“Shoes are banned.”

“Bags are banned.”

“Furniture is banned.”

“Plastic goods are banned.”

Those blanket statements come from older schedules and can now be misleading.

Check the current 2026 HS code against the Customs tariff and prohibition controls. Nigeria Customs now operates a tariff/CET lookup covering HS classifications, regulated codes and import-prohibition controls.

Use our Nigeria prohibited imports guide.

The map also does not tell you who is trustworthy #

Going to Xuchang does not make every wig factory honest.

Going to Guzhen does not make every lighting supplier good.

A manufacturing cluster gives you:

choice.

It does not give you:

verification.

Still check:

Use our Chinese supplier verification guide.

The easiest sourcing strategy for a Nigerian buyer #

Think of China in three levels.

Level 1: the fair #

Use the Canton Fair when you still do not know which supplier or city you need.

It brings manufacturers from many clusters into one place.

Level 2: the wholesale market #

Use:

Guangzhou

Yiwu

Shenzhen

when you need choice and relatively small quantities.

Level 3: the industrial cluster #

Go to:

Xuchang

Guzhen

Keqiao

Jinjiang

Datang

Yongkang

or the relevant production city when the product has proved itself and volume justifies going closer to the source.

That is the progression.

Not every importer needs to visit a factory town.

But every serious importer should eventually know where their product actually comes from.

The short map #

If you remember nothing else:

Mixed small goods → Yiwu

Fashion wholesale → Guangzhou

Electronics → Shenzhen

Furniture/tiles/home → Foshan

Lighting → Guzhen

Textiles → Keqiao

Hair/wigs → Xuchang

Sports shoes → Jinjiang

Fashion shoes → Wenzhou

Bags → Shiling

Toys → Chenghai

Socks → Datang

Hardware/tools → Yongkang

Breakers/switches → Liushi

Locks → Xiaolan

Glasses/lenses → Danyang

Knitwear → Puyuan

Small appliances → Cixi/Shunde

Solar → Changzhou

Lithium batteries → Ningde

Motorcycles → Chongqing

That is not a list of places China is allowed to manufacture those products.

It is the map of clusters worth knowing when you want to buy closer to the source.

Where ChinaBridge fits #

Our team is based in Guangzhou, which makes the Pearl River Delta particularly practical.

From there, buyers can work across:

Guangzhou → Foshan → Huadu/Shiling → Zhongshan → Dongguan → Shenzhen

without treating every sourcing trip as a separate China expedition.

For Yiwu, Xuchang, Keqiao, Jinjiang and the other specialised clusters, the question is whether your volume makes the extra trip worthwhile.

Tell the desk:

what product + expected quantity + Nigerian selling price.

The first answer should not simply be:

“Here is a supplier.”

It should be:

“This is the cluster, this is the likely buying route, this is the Nigerian compliance issue, and this is whether going factory-direct is actually worth it at your quantity.”

Then use the Yiwu market guide, Guangzhou wholesale guide, or Shenzhen electronics guide depending on where the product takes you.
