China accommodation registration matters when a Nigerian trader stays with a friend, rents an apartment or moves out of a hotel during a buying trip.

A visa, room payment and registered address serve different purposes. Arrange each before it becomes an urgent problem between supplier meetings.

China expanded online registration for non-hotel stays nationwide from 21 September 2026. You can now use official online channels, while in-person registration remains available.

Who must register a hotel or private stay in China? #

Article 39 of China's Exit and Entry Administration Law separates two situations.

Hotels must register foreign guests and report their accommodation information. For a non-hotel stay, the foreign guest or host must register with the local public-security authority within 24 hours of arrival at that accommodation.

Private accommodation can include a friend's home, rented housing or accommodation provided by a company. Paying no rent does not remove the requirement.

Use the address where you actually sleep. A supplier's office, warehouse or invitation-letter address should not replace your real accommodation address.

For example, you might book a hotel for the first two nights, then move into a friend's flat. Plan the registration for that flat before moving your suitcase there.

Registration also does not extend your permitted stay. Keep the immigration deadline in your travel plan separately from the date your rent runs out.

How do you arrange China accommodation registration online? #

The National Immigration Administration, or NIA, lists these channels:

• Its government service website at https://s.nia.gov.cn.
• The NIA 12367 app.
• The NIA 12367 WeChat mini program.
• The NIA 12367 Alipay mini program.

For a first registration at a private address, NIA guidance calls for the host's assistance. The host may be Chinese or a foreign national.

Arrange a time when both of you are available. Do not discover after landing that the person with the property information is away for several days.

The documented process involves account registration and identity verification, followed by the accommodation-registration service under foreigner services. Follow the current prompts for the selected channel.

A practical sequence is:

• Agree who will operate the application.
• Prepare identity and accommodation information together.
• Enter the actual address and arrival details.
• Review every field before submitting.
• Check the outcome and keep the registration record.

Do not assume sending your passport photo to a host completes those steps. Ask to see the result.

What information should you and your host prepare? #

Build a small travel folder before leaving Nigeria. Keep the documents accessible privately, rather than posting them into a large traders' group.

Prepare:

• Your valid passport and a clear image of its information page.
• Your visa or other applicable stay documents.
• The accommodation address in Chinese.
• Building, block and apartment numbers.
• Your actual arrival date and time.
• The host's name and working contact details.
• Property or tenancy information requested by the official service.

The exact documents depend on the route and local requirements. For example, Beijing's published online checklist includes a passport information-page photo, a live photo without headwear and an address-page image from a property certificate or lease.

That is a Beijing example, rather than a universal upload checklist for every city.

Confirm that the apartment number matches the property information. An English building nickname copied from a booking message may be insufficient to identify the dwelling accurately.

Use the maps and navigation guide for China to prepare the location for travel. A map pin helps you find a building; it does not establish that the registration details are correct.

You can send this message before paying for a private stay:

“I am a Nigerian passport holder arriving on [date]. Please confirm the full Chinese address and whether this stay is registered through a hotel or as private accommodation.”

“If it is private accommodation, who will assist with my first registration, what property information is available, and how will I receive the completed record?”

What changes if you book a hotel or serviced apartment? #

At a hotel, provide the identification needed for check-in and confirm that staff complete the required registration. You do not ordinarily need a separate personal online filing for that hotel stay.

An accommodation listing labelled “serviced apartment” needs a further question. Ask the operator whether it handles registration as a hotel or whether the stay uses the non-hotel process.

A reception desk, cleaning service or booking-platform listing alone does not answer that question.

Keep three pieces of evidence organised:

• Your booking confirmation.
• Your payment receipt.
• Your accommodation registration record or the operator's confirmation of registration.

These answer different questions. A receipt shows payment; it does not prove that the address information was submitted correctly.

Agree room charges, deposits and accepted payment methods separately. The WeChat Pay and Alipay guide for Nigerians helps with payment preparation, but payment-app access does not complete accommodation registration.

Must you register again after moving or returning? #

When moving to a different private address, arrange registration for the new stay. An earlier hotel's record does not automatically cover a friend's flat across the city.

Here is a hypothetical timing example. You move into private accommodation at 10am on Monday. The 24-hour period runs to 10am on Tuesday, using local China time. Preparing and filing promptly leaves time to resolve mistakes.

Save the new address before checking out. Use getting around Guangzhou to plan the move without losing the afternoon to an avoidable transport problem.

The September 2026 NIA guidance includes limited exceptions after a previously registered person travels and returns:

• Returning to the same home owned by the foreigner or their spouse in China.
• Returning to the same habitual residence while holding the same valid residence permit or permanent residence permit.

For the second exception, the guidance describes habitual residence as long-term residence exceeding 180 days.

A short business visa is not a residence permit. Do not apply that second exception simply because you have stayed in the same rented room on previous buying trips.

If you are unsure whether an exception covers your return, ask the local authority before relying on it.

What should you do if registration fails or details are wrong? #

An unfinished form, upload screenshot or message saying “I will do it” is not your completed registration record.

Check the result. Suzhou's October 2026 police guidance confirms that a successful electronic registration record can be queried and retained, with the same effect as the paper record.

If the application contains an error, use the correction instructions for that service or seek help from the local authority. Explain the actual arrival date and address accurately.

NIA directs users with difficulties to its published registration guide, the 12367 service hotline, local exit-entry service windows or the relevant police station. Online access problems do not remove the deadline.

Keep a short note of what failed and when. This helps you explain the problem; it does not guarantee an extension or excuse a late filing.

Failure to complete required non-hotel registration can lead to a warning and a fine of up to CNY 2,000 under Article 76.

If somebody charges for translation or assistance, ask what work the charge covers. Separate private assistance, rent and deposits from any claimed government charge, and verify the latter with the authority.

No. A private stay still needs the applicable registration. Discuss the process with your friend before arrival.

Does a hotel booking cover a later apartment stay? #

No. Organise registration for the address you move into. Keep the earlier hotel details as part of your travel records.

Must I use WeChat to register? #

No. NIA lists a website, an app and an Alipay mini program as alternatives. In-person registration also remains available.

Can I complete my first private-stay registration alone? #

NIA guidance calls for host assistance initially. It separately allows independent online filing for specified situations, including an owned home or repeat registration at the same previously registered residence.

Is a screenshot of my submitted form enough? #

Keep it, but also check the outcome and obtain the successful registration record. Save that record with the address and dates it covers.

Does accommodation registration extend my visa? #

No. Track your authorised stay separately and use the proper immigration process if you need more time.

What should I settle before paying for an apartment? #

Confirm the actual address, host assistance, available property information and how you will receive the record. Put those answers alongside the rent and cancellation terms.
