Lost Passport in China: Guide for Nigerian Visitors

For a lost passport in China, report the loss promptly, contact the Nigerian mission handling your location and complete the required Chinese immigration formalities before travelling.

A photograph of your passport can help establish your identity. It does not replace the travel document and approvals needed for your journey.

You may need help from several offices, so keep their roles clear: Chinese authorities handle the loss report and immigration requirements; the Nigerian mission handles the Nigerian replacement-document process.

1. What should you do when you notice the passport missing? #

Check the last place you used it and contact the hotel, transport operator or venue involved. Record when and where you last had it. Do not let a prolonged search delay reporting the loss.

Find copies of your passport data page, Chinese visa, entry record and current accommodation details. If your phone is also missing, ask a trusted person to help retrieve the copies you saved before travelling.

Tell the authorities what actually happened. If you suspect theft, explain the circumstances rather than inventing a simpler story.

Keep your current address and a reachable contact number available. Our Guangzhou safety guide covers wider travel precautions.

2. How do you obtain the official passport-loss document? #

China’s National Immigration Administration directs foreigners to the local public-security exit-entry authority to obtain a passport-loss certificate.

The local process can also involve reporting at a police station. Beijing’s official guide, for example, distinguishes the initial police report from the passport-loss certificate issued through exit-entry administration.

Ask which office serves your location and what you must bring. Prepare:

Confirm photo requirements locally before paying for them. Requirements published for Beijing are not automatically the checklist for Guangzhou or another city.

For immigration guidance in English, contact NIA’s 12367 service. Our translation-app guide can help with everyday communication while you arrange the official steps.

3. Which Nigerian mission and replacement document should you contact? #

Contact the Nigerian mission responsible for your location and explain that you have lost your passport. Ask about the current application route, appointment, documents, fees and expected processing time.

China’s Foreign Ministry lists the Nigerian Consulate General in Guangzhou as covering Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Its published telephone is +86 20 8521 9783.

Check the official consulate listing and confirm current office arrangements before travelling there. The listed number is not presented here as a verified round-the-clock emergency line.

Ask whether your circumstances require a replacement passport or an emergency return document. Nigerian Emergency Travel Certificate guidance describes a one-way journey to Nigeria. Confirm the exact document currently issued in China and its conditions.

Do not assume an emergency return document supports continued business travel or entry into another country. Ask the mission for the requirements relevant to your intended journey.

4. What happens to your Chinese visa and accommodation record? #

Obtaining a Nigerian replacement document does not complete the Chinese side of the process.

For travellers who entered with a visa, NIA and Guangzhou police guidance direct them back to Chinese exit-entry administration for the necessary replacement visa or stay-document formalities.

Ask the handling authority:

Raise an approaching stay deadline immediately. Do not assume that reporting the loss automatically extends it.

Ask your hotel or accommodation host how the registration record should be updated to reflect your replacement document. Keep evidence of where you are staying. Our Guangzhou accommodation guide explains related arrangements.

5. How should you handle flights and other bookings? #

Contact the airline or ticket seller before your booked departure if you may be unable to travel. Ask about changing the booking, any no-show consequences and the documents needed to update your passenger record.

Before paying for a replacement itinerary, confirm that the airline can accept your new document for the complete route. Check the transit requirements of every country involved.

An emergency document accepted for return to Nigeria may raise different questions on a connection through another country. Describe the exact document rather than saying only that you have a Nigerian passport.

Keep the airline’s instructions with your case records. Our Nigeria-to-Guangzhou flights guide explains wider route-planning considerations.

If you have travel insurance, contact the insurer about the evidence and approval needed for any claim. Keep receipts for document applications, accommodation and booking changes.

6. What practical arrangements will make the process easier? #

Keep one case file for your lost passport in China, with documents arranged by date.

Include the loss-report reference, official receipts, mission correspondence, application details, accommodation record and airline instructions. Record the next action, responsible office and deadline after each conversation.

Keep a working communication method. If you need to replace a SIM or change a service, ask the provider which identification it accepts in your circumstances. Our China SIM guide explains the broader options.

Before visiting an office, confirm the address, appointment and opening arrangements. Save the Chinese address and a screenshot using our China navigation guide.

Reschedule supplier visits and other non-essential appointments so they do not conflict with official appointments. Keep someone you trust informed of your revised plans.

7. What else do Nigerian travellers ask? #

Can I board a flight with only a police report? #

Do not rely on the report alone. Obtain the appropriate travel document and confirm the Chinese departure, airline and transit requirements for your actual route.

Does reporting the loss automatically extend my stay? #

Do not assume an extension. Tell exit-entry administration your existing stay deadline and ask what document or application establishes your status while the case is being handled.

Can I keep my original transit route? #

Confirm this with the airline and the relevant transit authorities using the exact replacement document. Permission to return to Nigeria does not by itself settle another country’s transit requirements.

What if I find the original passport after reporting it? #

Tell the Nigerian mission and Chinese handling authority before using it. Ask whether the document remains valid and what must happen to the loss report or replacement application.

Can a friend or agent complete everything for me? #

Do not assume that assistance removes attendance or identity checks. Ask each office which steps you must complete personally and what another person is permitted to help with.

What if the Nigerian mission cannot issue a replacement? #

Ask Chinese exit-entry administration about the applicable options. China has an exit-entry permit route for specified cases, including certain situations where a foreign mission cannot reissue a travel document. Eligibility and approval must be assessed by the authority.

How much will it cost, and how long will it take? #

Obtain separate current estimates for the Nigerian document and Chinese formalities. Add any booking and accommodation costs. Another mission’s published fee or processing time does not establish the result for your case in China.
