For a business trip, getting the destination city right is only the beginning. You also need the correct station, a usable payment method and enough time to reach your supplier after arrival.

This guide covers ordinary mainland China journeys and the practical checks for a first trip.

Can Nigerians book Chinese train tickets using a passport? #

China Railway's guidance allows foreign travellers to purchase real-name tickets using valid passports accepted under its rules.

The passenger information must identify the person who will travel. Use your own passport details even when a colleague, supplier or agent helps with the purchase.

Start with the official 12306 English website or China Railway's 12306 app. A station ticket counter is another option if you need assistance.

Keep the original passport used for booking available for the journey. A passport photo saved on your phone is useful as a reference, but you should not plan station entry around that copy.

How do you register and verify your passport on 12306? #

Step 1: create the account through an official channel.

Follow the registration options displayed. Use contact details you can access and complete the requested email or phone verification.

Step 2: enter the passenger details carefully.

Check the name, nationality, document type, passport number and other requested fields against the passport information page. Follow the current form's instructions for names and spacing.

Do not shorten your name simply to make a field accept it. Ask official support or station staff if the format causes a problem.

Step 3: check the identity-verification result.

Official guidance describes automatic verification, online submission of a passport information-page image for manual review, and verification at a railway station ticket counter.

If online verification fails, review the entered details and use the available official assistance. Take the original passport if attending a counter.

Complete this before an urgent travel day. Registration, identity approval and an issued ticket are different stages; creating an account alone does not establish that you have a seat.

How do you choose the right train and station? #

Before you book train tickets in China, obtain the supplier's actual address and ask which station is convenient for that location.

Check the complete station name in the search result. These names identify different places:

• Guangzhou South: 广州南.
• Guangzhou East: 广州东.
• Guangzhou: 广州.
• Shenzhen North: 深圳北.
• Shenzhen: 深圳.
• Yiwu: 义乌.

Send the selected arrival station to the supplier before paying. Ask which exit or meeting point to use and whether pickup is arranged.

• The seat class, carriage and seat or berth details are understood.
• You can retrieve the order and booking reference.

If someone books for you, request the issued-ticket record and check the passenger details yourself. Agree how changes or cancellations will be handled and separate any agent fee from the railway fare.

What happens at the station before boarding? #

Go to the departure station printed in your booking, with the original passport used to buy the ticket.

Official guidance allows foreign travellers to enter and exit through automatic or manual ticket gates using the original identification document. If a gate does not read your passport, ask staff for the appropriate assisted channel.

Keep your train number, carriage and seat details accessible. Check the station displays and announcements; boarding closes before departure, so the train's departure time is not your target arrival time at the gate.

How should you plan luggage, transfers and changes? #

Check the current railway baggage limits and prohibited or restricted items before packing. Tell railway staff about unusual samples, batteries, tools or liquids when seeking advice. Acceptance under an airline rule does not establish railway acceptance.

Arrange suitable transport for commercial cargo rather than assuming several bulky factory cartons will be accepted as passenger luggage.

For a connecting journey, check whether both trains use the same station. Allow for getting off the first train, reaching the next gate and any station transfer or additional checks.

Hypothetical planning example:

• Hotel to departure station: 45 minutes.
• Time allowed at the station before departure: 60 minutes.
