WeChat Pay and Alipay for Nigerians visiting China

How a Nigerian visitor sets up WeChat Pay and Alipay in China, which card works, the limits and fees on a foreign card, and why the wallet is not for suppliers.

China runs on QR payments.

In Guangzhou, you will use Alipay or WeChat Pay for taxis, food, metro trips, market purchases, hotel bills and samples far more often than you will use a physical Visa or Mastercard.

The good news for a Nigerian traveller is that you no longer need a Chinese bank account.

Both apps accept foreign phone numbers and can link supported international cards. China's official foreign-visitor guide lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover and UnionPay among supported card networks, although the exact cards accepted can vary by payment platform and issuing bank.

Set both apps up before leaving Nigeria.

Which should you use: Alipay or WeChat Pay? #

Install both.

Alipay is excellent for everyday payments, transport and other visitor services.

WeChat Pay is useful because WeChat is already where most Chinese suppliers will communicate with you.

If one card or payment fails in one app, the other gives you a backup.

Do not arrive with only one payment method.

How to set them up in Nigeria #

For each app:

  1. Register using your +234 Nigerian number.
  2. Add your real personal information.
  3. Complete identity verification when the app requests it. Keep your passport available.
  4. Add your international Visa, Mastercard or other supported card.
  5. Complete any verification requested by your Nigerian bank.
  6. Make sure the card appears correctly inside the wallet before travelling.

China's official guidance specifically says overseas users can register WeChat and Alipay using foreign phone numbers and link international bank cards.

Do this several days before your flight.

The Guangzhou market is not where you want to discover that your bank has blocked an overseas wallet transaction.

Will a Nigerian card work? #

It can.

But nobody can responsibly promise that every Nigerian Visa or Mastercard will link successfully.

China's official guidance makes the reason clear: the foreign issuing bank must approve the card binding, and some banks decline it because of their own security or risk controls.

So the important question is not:

“Is it a naira card or dollar card?”

It is:

“Will my bank authorise this card for international online/mobile-wallet transactions?”

Try your card while you are still in Nigeria.

If it fails, call the issuing bank or prepare another supported card.

What are the WeChat Pay and Alipay limits for foreigners? #

The limits were increased substantially in 2024.

For overseas visitors using linked international cards, the official limits are now up to:

US$5,000 per transaction

and

US$50,000 per year.

That is more than enough for normal travel expenses such as:

It does not mean you should use a mobile wallet to pay for a commercial container order.

We will come to that.

What are the fees? #

China's official foreign-investment/payment guide states that when an overseas bank card is linked to Alipay or WeChat:

RMB200 or less: no additional platform service fee.

Above RMB200: a 3% service fee can apply.

Your Nigerian bank can separately charge:

So if the app says RMB1,000 but your Nigerian account is debited more than the simple exchange-rate equivalent, that does not automatically mean Alipay overcharged you.

Check both sides.

How do you actually pay? #

At a shop or market stall, one of two things normally happens.

You scan the merchant #

The seller displays a QR code.

Open Alipay or WeChat Pay, scan it, enter the amount and confirm.

The merchant scans you #

For some businesses, you display your payment QR code and the cashier scans it.

China's official visitor guide confirms that both methods are supported.

Before confirming, check:

amount + merchant name + currency.

Do not become so comfortable scanning codes that you stop reading the confirmation screen.

Alipay QR and WeChat QR are not always the same thing #

Do not assume every Chinese QR code accepts both apps.

A merchant may show:

Alipay

or

WeChat Pay

or a payment code that supports several networks.

If WeChat refuses the code, try Alipay.

If neither works, ask the seller.

This is another reason to install both before travelling.

Can you still use cash in China? #

Yes.

China has not banned cash.

RMB remains legal tender, and Chinese authorities have specifically instructed businesses to accept cash and have said refusal can be penalised.

Carry some cash.

You may need it when:

But mobile payment is far more common in everyday life, especially at small shops and restaurants.

Think of cash as the backup, not your main payment system.

What about paying directly with Visa or Mastercard? #

It works in some places.

Large hotels, major attractions and businesses displaying the relevant international card logo may accept foreign cards directly. China has also been expanding foreign-card acceptance at hotels, attractions and major commercial locations.

But do not expect the small trader selling phone accessories in Guangzhou to have a Mastercard terminal waiting for you.

QR payment is the safer expectation.

Paying for samples at a market #

For small purchases, Alipay or WeChat Pay is ideal.

Suppose you buy:

20 sample handbags,

three pieces of fabric,

a power-bank sample,

or food after a supplier meeting.

Pay through the wallet.

Then immediately record what the payment was for.

Do not wait until Friday and look at twenty transactions thinking:

“What was this RMB680 payment?”

For business purchases, keep:

merchant name + amount + product + date

and ask for an invoice or proper receipt where you need one.

The payment-history screen proves money moved.

It does not automatically replace every document your accountant may need.

Check the name before paying #

A QR code can belong to a person rather than the company standing in front of you.

For a RMB40 lunch, that is usually not important.

For a RMB20,000 business payment, it matters.

Before making a substantial payment, ask:

Who owns this account?

and compare it with who you believe you are dealing with.

A supplier saying:

“Don't pay the company. Send the deposit to my personal Alipay instead.”

should make you stop.

Not scan faster.

WeChat Pay and Alipay are for spending in China #

This is the line Nigerian importers need to keep clear.

Use your wallet for:

food

transport

samples

small market purchases

hotel expenses

ordinary travel spending

Do not turn it into your main method for paying a Chinese supplier for commercial inventory.

A serious import transaction needs a clean connection between:

supplier → invoice → payment → shipping documents → Nigerian import paperwork.

Sending a large deposit to a salesperson's personal QR code weakens that trail and makes a dispute much harder.

Our guide to paying Chinese suppliers from Nigeria covers the proper routes.

For deposits and balances, read how to pay a China supplier deposit safely.

Mobile wallet limits are not your import budget #

The US$5,000 transaction limit sometimes creates the wrong idea:

“If WeChat lets me send it, it must be a good way to pay the factory.”

No.

A technical payment limit is not an import-compliance recommendation.

If you are ordering commercial goods, think instead about:

The amount matters.

But who received it and what document supports it matter more.

Keep payment records for your landed cost #

Your China spending is part of the cost of the buying trip.

Keep records of payments for:

When you return to Nigeria, those numbers help you calculate what the order really cost.

Our landed cost from China to Nigeria guide shows where they fit.

Your payment setup before the flight #

Do this in Nigeria:

  1. Install Alipay.
  2. Install and verify WeChat.
  3. Register both with your +234 number.
  4. Complete any required identity verification.
  5. Link a supported international card.
  6. Confirm that the card issuer allows international transactions.
  7. Carry a second card if possible.
  8. Keep some RMB cash as backup.
  9. Set up your travel eSIM so the apps remain connected after landing.

That is enough.

The short answer #

For a Nigerian travelling to China:

Alipay and WeChat Pay should be set up before you fly.

Both support overseas users and international cards.

Current official limits are up to US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year for overseas visitors using linked cards, while transactions above RMB200 can attract a 3% platform service fee.

Keep some cash because cash is still legal and accepted.

Keep another card because Nigerian bank authorisation can fail.

Use mobile wallets for the trip and small purchases.

Use a proper commercial payment route for the goods you are importing.

Before travelling, set up WeChat in Nigeria.

Then choose your China SIM or eSIM.

And before paying a factory deposit, read how to pay a Chinese supplier from Nigeria.
