Where to stay in Guangzhou: Xiaobei, Sanyuanli, Tianhe or Pazhou

Where to stay in Guangzhou as a Nigerian buyer: which district suits which markets, the rule that hotels must take foreigners, registration, deposits, long stays.

Guide Travelling and Living Updated 12 min read
A mid range hotel room in Guangzhou with the city skyline through the window, or the street outside a Xiaobei hotel with African restaurants and cargo shops

Where you stay in Guangzhou should depend on what you came to buy.

A cheap hotel on the wrong side of the city can cost you:

one hour going out + one hour coming back

every working day.

For a five-day buying trip, that is almost a full working day lost to traffic and metro transfers.

The practical choices for most Nigerian buyers are:

Xiaobei/Yuexiu for a first trip and the West African trading network.

Sanyuanli/Baiyun for leather goods, bags, cosmetics and related wholesale markets.

Shisanhang/Liwan for clothing.

Tianhe for business meetings and a quieter base.

Pazhou/Haizhu for Canton Fair.

Pick the area before you pick the hotel.

Xiaobei and Dengfeng: easiest for a first Nigerian buying trip #

For a first trip to Guangzhou, Xiaobei is one of the easiest places to settle into.

The area around:

Xiaobei Metro Station — Line 5

and nearby Dengfeng has long had a large African trading community.

You will find:

For a Nigerian arriving alone for the first time, that familiarity can make the first few days much easier.

But use the area as a base.

Do not automatically use every:

agent

money changer

or:

shipping company

you meet because somebody speaks English, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba or Pidgin.

The normal supplier and payment checks still apply.

Use official payment channels and check freight companies properly.

Who should stay in Xiaobei? #

Choose Xiaobei if:

this is your first Guangzhou trip

you are buying from several different areas

you want easy access to African food and trading services

or:

you want a central base rather than sleeping beside one market.

It is also reasonably positioned for moving toward:

Guangzhou Railway Station

Sanyuanli

Tianhe

and:

Liwan.

For a mixed buying trip, that can be more useful than being directly beside one market.

Sanyuanli and Guangyuan West Road: bags, leather and beauty trade #

If your buying trip is focused on:

bags

leather goods

shoe-related products

beauty products

cosmetics packaging

or:

some auto-parts markets,

look around Sanyuanli and Guangyuan West Road.

This area sits north of central Yuexiu and connects well with the large wholesale belt around Guangzhou Railway Station and Baiyun.

For leather and bags, remember that Guangzhou is only part of the story.

Guangzhou's government recognises the much larger leather and leather-goods market cluster in Shiling, Huadu, farther north, as one of the city's important market-purchase trade zones.

So:

Sanyuanli is convenient for wholesale buying.

Shiling is worth knowing when you start going deeper into the leather supply chain.

Nigerian import rules matter before you buy bags or shoes #

Do not see a market full of products and assume that because they are legal to sell in China they are legal to import into Nigeria.

Nigeria's import rules restrict several categories of finished:

footwear

and:

bags/luggage

with specific exceptions.

Read shoes and bags from China before paying a deposit.

Your hotel location should help you buy.

It should not help you buy the wrong product faster.

Shisanhang and Cultural Park: clothing buyers #

If clothing is your main business, look toward:

Shisanhang — 十三行

around Cultural Park in Liwan District.

This corrects an important location mistake in many Guangzhou guides:

Shisanhang is not in Yuexiu.

Guangzhou's own market guide places New China Plaza at:

1 Shisanhang Road, Liwan District

with access from:

Cultural Park Station, Metro Line 6.

This is one of the city's important low- and mid-price clothing wholesale areas.

If your days will mainly be spent comparing:

dresses

shirts

jeans

knitwear

women's fashion

and:

general ready-made clothing,

staying nearby can save a lot of movement.

Clothing buyers should also know the railway-station markets #

Not every Guangzhou clothing market is in Shisanhang.

The large wholesale belt around:

Baima

Zhanxi

Hongmian

and Guangzhou Railway Station

is another major clothing area.

Guangzhou's market-upgrade programme specifically lists several large clothing markets, including:

Baima Clothing Market

Hongmian International Fashion City

and other large specialised markets.

So choose your hotel based on which clothing markets you actually intend to work.

Do not simply search:

“hotel near Guangzhou clothing market.”

There is more than one clothing district.

Our Guangzhou wholesale market guide breaks them down.

Tianhe: best for meetings, offices and a quieter business base #

Tianhe is different.

This is modern business Guangzhou.

Think:

office towers

major shopping centres

international hotels

banks

corporate meetings

and:

better business facilities.

The Consulate General of Nigeria is also in Tianhe at:

Grand Tower, 228 Tianhe Road.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently lists the Nigerian Consulate at that address.

Tianhe makes sense if your trip is more:

supplier meetings

corporate appointments

factory-owner meetings

or:

business development

than walking wholesale markets from morning until evening.

Who should not automatically choose Tianhe? #

A trader buying cheap wholesale clothing all day.

You may get a nicer hotel and then spend your morning travelling back toward Liwan or the railway-station markets.

That is the basic rule of Guangzhou accommodation:

nice hotel does not always mean useful hotel.

Location should follow the work.

Pazhou: stay here for Canton Fair #

Pazhou is in Haizhu District and is home to the China Import and Export Fair Complex.

If your trip is primarily Canton Fair, staying close to:

Pazhou Station

or:

Xingangdong Station

can save a huge amount of time.

The official Guangzhou transport guidance says the exhibition complex is served directly by:

Metro Line 8 — Pazhou and Xingangdong

and:

Line 11 — Pazhou.

During Canton Fair, that convenience matters.

Especially at:

8:30am

and:

6:00pm.

Outside Canton Fair, Pazhou is usually unnecessary for a trader #

Pazhou is an exhibition and business district.

If the Fair is not the reason for your trip, there is usually little reason for a wholesale-market buyer to pay extra simply to stay beside the exhibition halls.

You may be better in:

Yuexiu

Liwan

Baiyun

or:

Tianhe

depending on your product.

For Fair weeks specifically, use hotels near Canton Fair at Pazhou.

The easiest decision #

If you do not want to overthink it:

First Guangzhou trip #

Xiaobei / Yuexiu

Clothes #

Shisanhang / Liwan
or the railway-station clothing district.

Sanyuanli / Baiyun

Corporate meetings #

Tianhe

Canton Fair #

Pazhou / Haizhu

That decision will matter more than whether the hotel has a swimming pool.

Can Chinese hotels refuse foreign guests? #

The rule changed significantly in 2024.

China issued national measures telling accommodation platforms and hotel operators not to use special qualification requirements as a barrier to receiving overseas guests and not to publish restrictions saying they do not receive foreigners solely on that basis.

So the old idea that a Chinese hotel needs some special:

“foreigner licence”

before it can accommodate you is no longer a good explanation for refusal.

But practice can still be uneven.

Smaller properties may have staff who are unfamiliar with:

foreign passports

visas

or:

police-registration procedures.

That is the problem you want to avoid at 11pm with a suitcase.

Check the hotel policy before paying #

Trip.com is particularly useful in China because individual listings show a:

“Guests Accepted”

section.

For example, current Guangzhou listings explicitly state:

“Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.”

Check that before booking.

Also check:

cancellation policy

deposit

payment methods

and:

front-desk hours.

Do not choose a hotel only because the photo looks nice.

Trip.com, Booking.com or Agoda? #

All three can be useful.

For China specifically, Trip.com has one advantage:

it is deeply integrated with the Chinese domestic hotel market and frequently states the guest-acceptance policy clearly.

Trip.com's own 2026 guidance tells international visitors to check whether a property accepts foreign passports before booking.

Whichever site you use, save:

hotel name in Chinese

full Chinese address

booking confirmation

and:

hotel telephone number.

Your taxi driver cares much more about the Chinese address than the English hotel name.

What happens when you check in? #

Take your original passport.

Hotels in China are required to register foreign guests and submit accommodation information to the local public-security authorities.

The front desk will normally:

check your passport

record the visa/entry information

and:

complete the hotel accommodation registration.

That means a properly registered hotel handles the registration requirement for you.

You do not normally need to go separately to a police station while staying in that hotel.

Do not leave your passport behind as security #

The hotel needs your passport for check-in identification and registration.

That does not mean the hotel should keep your passport throughout the stay as a deposit.

Once normal check-in formalities are complete, keep your passport safely with you.

It is your immigration document.

What about hotel deposits? #

There is no single Guangzhou deposit rule.

Some hotels require one.

Some do not.

For example, current Trip.com listings show one Guangzhou property charging a CNY 500 fixed deposit, another calculating the deposit according to length of stay, while other properties state no deposit required.

So do not arrive assuming:

every hotel takes ¥500

or:

every hotel takes no deposit.

Read the property policy.

How can you pay the deposit? #

Again, it depends on the property.

Current Guangzhou hotel listings show combinations of:

cash

credit cards

debit cards

and:

third-party payment services.

If you have already set up:

Alipay

and:

WeChat Pay,

that helps.

But keep a sensible amount of RMB available as backup.

Use our WeChat Pay and Alipay guide before travelling.

Get the hotel's Chinese address #

This is one of the simplest Guangzhou travel habits.

Save a screenshot containing:

hotel name in Chinese

Chinese address

and:

telephone number.

Why?

Because after twelve hours walking markets, you do not want to explain:

“Grand something International Hotel near Xiaobei”

to a driver who does not recognise the English name.

Show the Chinese address.

Use our maps in China guide for the rest.

Staying with a friend or in an apartment is different #

If you stay somewhere other than a hotel:

you or the person accommodating you must register the address within 24 hours.

That comes directly from Article 39 of China's Exit and Entry Administration Law.

This applies to:

private apartments

friends' homes

long-stay rentals

and other non-hotel accommodation.

Big 2026 change: you can now register online #

As of 21 September 2026, China has rolled out online accommodation registration for foreigners staying outside hotels nationwide.

You or the person accommodating you can use:

NIA government website

NIA 12367 app

NIA 12367 WeChat mini-program

or:

NIA 12367 Alipay mini-program.

The traditional in-person route at the local public-security authority remains available.

Online registration has the same legal effect as registering in person.

That is a major improvement for somebody renting an apartment for several weeks.

What if the online registration fails? #

Do not leave it.

Go to the local police/public-security office and complete the registration there.

The legal deadline remains:

within 24 hours of arriving at the non-hotel accommodation.

Take the registration seriously.

What happens if you do not register? #

China's National Immigration Administration says a foreigner who fails to complete required non-hotel accommodation registration may receive:

a warning

and potentially a fine of up to:

RMB 2,000.

For a buyer who depends on returning to China regularly, there is no reason to create immigration problems over a free registration.

Do it on day one.

If you move apartments, register again #

Accommodation registration is tied to where you are actually staying.

If you move from:

Xiaobei

to:

Tianhe

or from a hotel into a private apartment,

make sure the new accommodation is registered as required.

Do not assume the registration from your first address follows you automatically.

Staying one month or longer #

For a long sourcing trip, two different clocks matter.

Your room #

Negotiate:

weekly

or:

monthly

pricing.

A serviced apartment may be cheaper and more comfortable than paying a hotel night by night.

But check:

foreigner acceptance

registration

deposit

utilities

and:

refund terms

before transferring money.

Your visa #

Your hotel booking does not control how long you can stay in China.

Your visa does.

Check the:

Duration of Each Stay

printed on the visa.

If you need additional time, the extension process is handled by the local Exit and Entry Administration and should normally be started at least seven days before the current permitted stay expires.

Use how to extend a China visa in China.

Do not confuse a one-month apartment with permission to stay one month #

A landlord may happily rent to you for:

90 days.

That does not mean immigration gave you 90 days.

Your accommodation contract and immigration permission are separate things.

Always follow the visa.

Use China visa validity and duration of stay to calculate the date properly.

How much should you budget for hotels? #

Do not use a fixed nightly figure from an article.

Guangzhou prices change dramatically based on:

hotel class

district

weekday

Chinese holiday

and especially:

Canton Fair.

Search using your actual dates.

During April and October Fair periods, rooms around Pazhou and major international hotels can rise sharply and availability tightens.

Outside major exhibition periods, you normally have much more flexibility.

Do not book three weeks blindly #

For a first trip, one useful approach is:

book the first few nights somewhere reliable.

Then inspect longer-stay options after you arrive.

That lets you answer:

Is this area actually convenient?

Is the room acceptable?

How far is the market really?

Can I negotiate a weekly rate?

without committing three weeks of accommodation from Nigeria.

During Canton Fair, however, waiting until arrival can be expensive.

Book those dates early.

What if a confirmed hotel refuses you at the desk? #

Do not start a midnight argument over Chinese hotel policy.

First:

show the confirmed booking.

Then:

show the listing stating that guests from all countries/regions are accepted, if applicable.

If the property still refuses check-in, contact the booking platform immediately and ask for:

relocation

or:

refund assistance.

Keep screenshots of:

the booking

guest policy

and:

payment.

That gives the platform something concrete to work with.

The first-night checklist #

Before leaving Nigeria, save:

HOTEL

✓ English name

✓ Chinese name

✓ Chinese address

✓ telephone number

BOOKING

✓ confirmation saved offline

✓ cancellation terms checked

GUEST POLICY

✓ foreigners/all nationalities accepted?

PAYMENT

✓ room prepaid or pay at property?

✓ deposit required?

✓ accepted payment methods?

TRANSPORT

✓ nearest metro station?

REGISTRATION

✓ hotel will register you at check-in?

That removes most first-night problems.

The short answer #

For most Nigerian buyers:

First trip / mixed sourcing: Xiaobei and central Yuexiu.

Clothing: Shisanhang in Liwan or the railway-station clothing markets.

Leather, bags and related wholesale trade: Sanyuanli/Baiyun, with Shiling worth knowing for deeper leather sourcing.

Business meetings: Tianhe.

Canton Fair: Pazhou in Haizhu.

China's policy now says accommodation operators should not use the old lack-of-foreigner-qualification excuse as a barrier to hosting overseas guests, but checking the property's guest policy before booking is still sensible.

At a hotel, the hotel registers your accommodation with the police.

At a private apartment or friend's home, registration must be completed within 24 hours.

And from 21 September 2026, that non-hotel registration can now be completed online nationwide through China's NIA 12367 channels.

Choose the hotel for the work you came to do.

The cheapest room in the wrong district is often the expensive one.

For Fair accommodation, continue with hotels near Canton Fair at Pazhou.

Then use getting around Guangzhou and maps in China before your first buying day.
