China SIM card for Nigerians: eSIM, airport SIM and roaming

China SIM card for Nigerians: a local SIM at Baiyun airport, an eSIM that keeps WhatsApp working, or Airtel, MTN and Glo roaming. Dated prices and the OTP problem.

For a Nigerian travelling to China, the best phone setup is usually simple:

Use a travel eSIM for data. Keep your Nigerian SIM active for OTPs. Buy a Chinese SIM only if you actually need a Chinese number.

That gives you WhatsApp, Gmail and Nigerian banking access without sacrificing the +234 number tied to your bank accounts.

For a two-week Guangzhou buying trip, you normally do not need three expensive data plans.

The best setup for most Nigerian travellers #

Before leaving Nigeria:

Data: China travel eSIM
Bank OTPs: Nigerian SIM
Chinese number: local SIM only if needed

On a dual-SIM phone, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn data roaming off on the Nigerian SIM.

If your phone has an option such as Allow Cellular Data Switching, switch it off too. That stops the phone quietly moving data back to your Nigerian line when the eSIM signal drops.

One background photo backup on roaming can cost more than the eSIM itself.

Option 1: buy a Chinese SIM in Guangzhou #

A local Chinese SIM gives you:

Foreign visitors can legally buy Chinese SIM cards using a passport at service outlets operated by China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. China's official guide confirms that foreigners do not need a Chinese ID card to do this.

At Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, ignore old guides sending you to Terminal 1.

Terminal 1 is currently closed, and international passengers now use T2 and T3. Guangzhou Airport has foreign-passenger service centres in the international arrivals areas of both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, where communication services including local SIM cards and data packages are available.

Take your passport.

Ask for:

a prepaid/tourist SIM + enough data for the length of your stay.

Do not choose by price alone. Ask:

How much data? How many days? Does the package include calls? Can I top it up easily?

Packages change, so there is little value in memorising a SIM price from a blog written six months ago.

The disadvantage of a Chinese SIM #

A normal mainland Chinese SIM uses China's domestic internet.

That means services such as Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and many other foreign platforms are generally restricted on that connection.

WeChat, Alipay, Amap, Didi and Chinese websites work normally.

For a Nigerian trader, this matters because your life is probably split in two:

Chinese suppliers on WeChat

and

family, staff, customers and banking in Nigeria on WhatsApp and other foreign services.

A local Chinese SIM solves the first side very well.

It does not automatically solve the second.

Read does WhatsApp work in China? before relying on hotel Wi-Fi or a Chinese SIM as your only internet connection.

Option 2: use a travel eSIM #

For most short business trips, this is the easiest solution.

A travel eSIM can be purchased and installed before you leave Nigeria.

When you land, it connects to a Chinese mobile network for coverage while the provider routes the data internationally.

That routing is important.

Some China travel eSIM providers specifically route traffic outside mainland China, allowing services such as WhatsApp, Gmail and Google to work without an additional VPN.

Airalo, for example, states that its China eSIM traffic uses international routing and currently allows access to services normally blocked on mainland local networks.

Do not assume every eSIM sold for China works this way.

Before buying, look for clear wording saying the plan supports unrestricted international internet access in mainland China.

If the provider does not say it, ask.

How much data do you need? #

For a two-week buying trip:

10 GB is usually enough for a moderate user.

Go higher if you will constantly:

As an example of current pricing, Airalo was listing a 15-day 10 GB China plan at US$25.50 and a 30-day 10 GB plan at US$26.50 when checked in September 2026. Prices can change, so treat that as a current reference, not a permanent ChinaBridge quote.

The cheapest plan is not necessarily the best.

Check:

data allowance + validity + international internet access + supported network + top-up availability.

Check whether your phone supports eSIM before paying #

Do this in Nigeria.

Do not buy an eSIM because somebody told you:

“All iPhones support it.”

Support depends on the exact phone model and market version.

On an iPhone, check:

Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Add eSIM

On Android, look under:

Settings → Connections / SIM Manager / Mobile Network

The wording varies by manufacturer.

Also make sure the phone is network unlocked.

Install the eSIM before travelling while you still have reliable internet, but follow the provider's instructions about when to activate it. Some plans start their validity only after connecting in China; others have different activation rules.

Option 3: keep your Nigerian SIM on roaming #

Do this even if you buy an eSIM.

Your Nigerian number may still be tied to:

Keep the SIM active.

But unless you intentionally bought a roaming bundle, do not use it as your main data line.

Airtel roaming in China #

Airtel currently lists China among its supported Roam The World destinations.

Its published bundles include:

₦4,500: 1 day, 250 MB + calls/SMS
₦10,000: 10 days, 1 GB + calls/SMS
₦25,000: 30 days, 3 GB + calls/SMS.

Its current pay-as-you-go China rate shows ₦30 per MB for data.

That works out to roughly:

₦30,000 for 1 GB.

So accidentally letting Instagram, iCloud or Google Photos use roaming data can become expensive very quickly.

Use a bundle if you genuinely want Airtel roaming data.

Otherwise:

leave the Airtel line active but switch its mobile data off.

MTN roaming in China #

China is currently included among MTN Nigeria's TravelPass destinations.

MTN's published TravelPass options currently include:

MTN says TravelPass can be activated through its USSD channels or MyMTN.

Check the current China offer immediately before travelling because roaming products change.

What about Glo? #

Glo supports international roaming and sells roaming data bundles, but its public data-bundle page does not currently make the China eligibility of every bundle clear enough for us to tell you to rely on a particular package.

Glo advises customers to confirm roaming coverage for the destination before travelling.

If Glo is the number connected to your bank, contact Glo before departure and confirm:

China roaming partner + SMS reception + data bundle availability.

Do not discover the answer when the bank is waiting for an OTP.

Will your Nigerian bank OTP work in China? #

Usually, what matters is whether your Nigerian SIM successfully registers on a Chinese roaming partner network.

Receiving an SMS OTP does not require mobile data.

So your phone can be configured like this:

Nigerian SIM: ON
Nigerian SIM mobile data: OFF
Travel eSIM mobile data: ON

That lets the eSIM handle internet while your Nigerian line remains available for SMS.

But do not make an important supplier payment depend on theory.

Before travelling:

Some OTP problems come from the bank rather than the mobile network.

Have a backup.

Do you really need a Chinese phone number? #

For a short Guangzhou trip, maybe not.

Many major Chinese apps have become much more foreign-user friendly.

You can register WeChat and Alipay using an overseas number, and China's official foreign-user guidance supports registration using foreign mobile numbers.

But a Chinese number can still be useful for:

So do not buy a local SIM because somebody says China is impossible without one.

Buy it because you actually need the +86 number.

One phone or two phones? #

A good dual-SIM/eSIM phone can handle everything.

Set:

Primary voice/SMS: Nigerian SIM
Mobile data: China travel eSIM
Data switching: OFF

Then add a Chinese SIM only if your device has room and you need one.

For traders doing a lot of business in China, carrying a second phone can still be sensible.

One phone can hold your Nigerian banking and personal accounts.

The other can carry your Chinese SIM, WeChat, supplier contacts and local apps.

It is not essential, but it avoids one lost phone taking your entire business offline.

What should you buy for a two-week Guangzhou trip? #

For most Nigerian buyers:

Buy a 10–20 GB China travel eSIM before leaving Nigeria.

Keep your Nigerian SIM active for OTPs and calls, but turn Nigerian mobile data off.

Do not buy a Chinese SIM immediately unless you discover that you actually need a local number.

That setup gives you:

WhatsApp + Gmail + Nigerian banking + WeChat + Chinese apps + bank OTPs

without paying Nigerian roaming rates for everyday internet.

Set it up before the flight #

Do not leave all this until Guangzhou Airport.

Before travelling:

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  2. Buy and install the China eSIM.
  3. Keep activation instructions/screenshots offline.
  4. Confirm international roaming on your Nigerian number.
  5. Switch Nigerian-SIM mobile data off.
  6. Disable automatic data switching.
  7. Install and set up WeChat.
  8. Install Alipay.
  9. Download Amap or your preferred China map.
  10. Download your hotel address in Chinese.

Then when you land, you should only need to switch on the eSIM and continue moving.

The short answer #

If you searched “China SIM card for Nigerians”, this is the setup that makes the most sense for a normal business trip:

Travel eSIM for internet.

Nigerian SIM for OTPs and your +234 number.

Chinese SIM only when you need a +86 number.

Do not pay expensive Nigerian roaming rates just to use WhatsApp all day.

Do not rely only on a mainland Chinese SIM if you need Google and WhatsApp.

And do not arrive in China before confirming that the number connected to your bank can roam.

Set your phone up together with your WeChat account before travelling.

Then read does WhatsApp work in China?.

And once you land, follow our Guangzhou airport arrival guide from immigration to the city.
