Yiwu market for Nigerian buyers: what it is and who it suits
Yiwu market from a Nigerian buyer's side: the five districts and what each sells, minimum orders, the flight from Guangzhou, and which goods to buy somewhere else.

Yiwu is where you go when you want many products, relatively low quantities and one shipment home.
If your Nigerian business sells:
jewellery, hair accessories, toys, stationery, gifts, kitchenware, socks, umbrellas, small hardware, bags, phone accessories or general merchandise,
Yiwu should be on your China sourcing list.
The main market — Yiwu International Trade Market — now has six districts, more than 80,000 booths across the wider Yiwu market system and around 2.1 million product varieties, according to its official Chinagoods platform. (chinagoods.com)
But Yiwu is not automatically the cheapest place for everything.
The important question is:
Are you buying variety, or are you buying volume?
Yiwu is exceptional at the first.
For one product by the container, you should often go closer to the factory.
Why Yiwu matters to Nigerian traders #
Nigeria is already a major Yiwu market.
From January to August 2025, Yiwu exported about RMB6.85 billion worth of goods to Nigeria, up 57.7% year on year, making Nigeria Yiwu's largest export destination in West Africa. (ywindex.com)
That makes sense when you look at what Nigerian traders sell.
Yiwu is built around inexpensive, repeatable goods that can fill:
- supermarkets
- provision shops
- gift shops
- beauty-accessory stores
- school-supply shops
- phone-accessory shops
- market stalls
- online stores
You can buy from twenty suppliers and consolidate everything into one warehouse before shipping to Nigeria.
That is the real Yiwu advantage.
What is in each Yiwu market district? #
Do not arrive and start walking randomly.
The market is too large.
Go to the district that sells your category.
| District | Main products |
|---|---|
| District 1 | Toys, artificial flowers, hair accessories, jewellery, crafts, festive/party goods |
| District 2 | Bags, luggage, umbrellas, hardware, tools, kitchen/bath products, small appliances, new-energy items |
| District 3 | Stationery, office supplies, cosmetics, eyewear and related goods |
| District 4 | Socks, shoes, hats, scarves, underwear, general merchandise |
| District 5 | Imported goods, bedding, hair products, curtains/textiles, pet goods, car accessories |
| District 6 | Jewellery, trendy toys, beauty/medical-aesthetic products, household/health goods, drones, robotics, AI, AR/VR and smart products |
The official Chinagoods market guide confirms these category divisions. (chinagoods.com)
District 6 is the big change older Yiwu guides miss.
District 6 is the new market #
Yiwu opened its Global Digital Trade Center — International Trade Market District 6 — on 14 October 2025.
The entire project covers about 1.25 million square metres, while the market portion covers roughly 410,000 square metres and contains more than 5,000 booths. (ezhejiang.gov.cn)
It focuses more heavily on newer categories such as:
- fashion jewellery
- creative/trendy toys
- smart equipment
- drones
- robotics
- AI products
- AR/VR equipment
- newer household and lifestyle products
So if your last Yiwu guide was written in 2024, it is already incomplete.
What time does Yiwu market open? #
The official Chinagoods customer-service listing currently gives market hours around:
8:30am–5:30pm in summer
and
8:30am–5:00pm in winter. (chinagoods.com)
Do not arrive at 4pm expecting to “see Yiwu”.
You may spend that long in one district.
A serious buyer should plan a full day around a category.
For several product categories, give yourself two or three days.
Do not plan Yiwu around Chinese New Year #
The market slows and closes around Chinese New Year.
Factories, warehouses, freight companies and suppliers also take holidays at different times.
For 2027, Chinese New Year falls on 6 February.
Do not schedule an early-February buying trip assuming every booth and factory will operate normally.
Check the official Yiwu market calendar before booking flights.
The problem is not only whether the market doors are open.
The supplier you meet may have no factory available to produce your order.
Who should go to Yiwu? #
A trader who wants variety #
This is the ideal Yiwu buyer.
Suppose your shop needs:
- hair clips
- earrings
- gift boxes
- makeup brushes
- socks
- stationery
- party decorations
- phone holders
- small kitchen tools
You do not need eight factory trips across China.
Yiwu lets you source those categories inside one commercial ecosystem.
Then your agent consolidates them into one shipment.
A buyer testing new products #
Yiwu is useful when you want to test several lines rather than place a huge factory MOQ.
Many booths work with carton-level wholesale quantities, although there is no universal Yiwu MOQ.
One seller may allow one carton.
Another may require 500 pieces.
Another may quote a completely different price if you take 5,000.
Ask:
MOQ?
Pieces per carton?
Price at 1 carton, 5 cartons and 20 cartons?
That tells you much more than asking:
“Best price?”
A buyer building a mixed container #
This is one of Yiwu's strongest use cases.
You can buy from:
Supplier A — toys
Supplier B — stationery
Supplier C — jewellery
Supplier D — kitchenware
Supplier E — umbrellas
and send all five orders to one Yiwu warehouse.
The warehouse receives them, counts them, marks them and consolidates them for export.
That is much easier than asking every booth to independently ship to Nigeria.
Who should consider another city instead? #
Yiwu can sell almost anything.
That does not mean it is the best sourcing city for everything.
Serious clothing sourcing #
Yiwu has apparel, and the separate Huangyuan Market specialises in men's, women's and children's clothing. (chinagoods.com)
But if clothing is your whole business, Guangzhou generally gives you much deeper fashion-market choice and access to surrounding garment supply chains.
Use our Guangzhou wholesale market guide.
Phones and serious electronics #
Yiwu is excellent for:
phone cases, cables, holders and inexpensive accessories.
For:
phones, components, specialised electronics, PCBs and deeper technology sourcing,
Shenzhen is usually more useful.
See our Shenzhen electronics market guide.
One product in very large quantity #
If you are buying one SKU by the container, ask where it is actually manufactured.
Yiwu traders may be selling goods made in:
- Zhejiang
- Guangdong
- Jiangsu
- Fujian
- Hebei
- elsewhere in China
Going to the production cluster can remove a trading layer and give you better control over:
price + specification + packaging + production.
Our which Chinese city makes what guide helps with that decision.
Yiwu booth or factory: know what you are dealing with #
Do not assume every booth is a factory.
Some are.
Some are factory sales offices.
Some are wholesalers.
Some source from several factories.
That is not automatically bad.
For mixed, lower-volume buying, a good wholesaler can be exactly what you need.
The question changes when you want:
custom manufacturing
private label
large quantity
technical specification
or
regulatory certification.
Then ask:
Who actually manufactures this product?
If SONCAP or another conformity requirement applies in Nigeria, the supplier must be able to connect the goods to the manufacturer and provide the documentation/testing needed for certification.
A market booth is not automatically unable to do this.
But you should confirm it before ordering, not after the cartons reach the warehouse.
Use our SONCAP guide.
Be careful with Nigerian prohibited and regulated goods #
Do not use an old Nigerian prohibition list while walking around Yiwu.
Nigeria revised its import-prohibition framework in 2026, and the current rule is based on the exact HS classification.
For example, old advice saying all plastic household wares, footwear, bags and furniture from China are prohibited should not simply be repeated under the current 2026 framework.
Before buying a serious quantity:
product → Nigerian HS code → prohibition check → regulatory check.
Use our 2026 Nigeria prohibited imports guide.
Yiwu has millions of legal products.
It also has products Nigeria regulates or prohibits.
The fact that a booth can sell it to you does not mean Nigerian Customs will clear it.
How buying in Yiwu actually works #
A first-time buyer should work like this.
1. Decide your categories before entering #
Do not write:
“I want profitable things.”
Write:
hair accessories
school stationery
party supplies
small kitchen tools
Then identify the districts and floors.
2. Photograph the booth number #
Every time you find something interesting, save:
product photo + booth number + supplier WeChat + price.
Do not photograph the product alone.
After visiting forty booths, you will have no idea who sold what.
Create albums on your phone:
Yiwu Toys
Yiwu Jewellery
Yiwu Kitchen
This sounds basic.
It saves hours.
3. Ask for three prices #
Instead of:
“How much?”
ask:
Price for one carton?
Price for five cartons?
Price for 1,000 pieces?
Now you understand how the supplier's pricing moves with quantity.
4. Ask for the carton immediately #
Before falling in love with the unit price, ask:
Pieces per carton?
Carton dimensions?
Gross weight?
That tells you what the product will cost to ship to Nigeria.
A very cheap product can become a terrible import when it occupies half a cubic metre.
Use our China-to-Nigeria CBM guide.
5. Do not send every purchase to your hotel #
Use a warehouse.
Your Yiwu agent or freight company should give you one receiving address and a cargo/marking code.
Each booth delivers to that warehouse.
The warehouse then:
receives → identifies → counts → stores → consolidates → ships.
Without that structure, a mixed buying trip becomes chaos.
Do you need a Yiwu buying agent? #
Not because you are Nigerian.
Because of what you are buying.
An agent becomes useful when you have:
- many suppliers
- language problems
- dozens of small orders
- goods arriving on different days
- inspection needs
- consolidation
- export paperwork
Ask what the agent actually charges.
The fee may be:
percentage commission
fixed service fee
warehouse charge
or a combination.
Then ask what is included.
Do they:
negotiate?
pay suppliers?
inspect quantities?
check quality?
warehouse free for X days?
prepare export documents?
Do not accept:
“We charge only 2%.”
until you know what else they earn from exchange rates, freight or supplier rebates.
Chinagoods: Yiwu market online #
Yiwu has its own official marketplace:
Chinagoods.
It is operated as the online platform for Yiwu's physical market and lets buyers search products, booth numbers and suppliers across the different market districts. (chinagoods.com)
Use it before travelling to:
- understand categories
- find booth locations
- shortlist products
- locate suppliers
It is also useful for finding a supplier again after meeting them in person.
For a first large order, however, do not treat an online listing as supplier verification.
The same China buying rules still apply.
Is Yiwu quality bad? #
Yiwu does not have one quality level.
You can find the same-looking product at three very different prices.
Usually something has changed:
- material
- thickness
- finish
- component quality
- packaging
- tolerance
- durability
Do not say:
“Give me cheapest.”
Say:
“Show me the difference between this one and the better one.”
Then physically compare them.
For products that matter, keep the approved sample.
The sample becomes what the later delivery is checked against.
Cheap is useful only if your Nigerian customer will still buy the result.
How do you get from Guangzhou to Yiwu? #
You have two realistic choices.
Fly #
There are currently nonstop Guangzhou–Yiwu flights.
In September 2026, China Southern schedules show journeys of roughly 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours between Guangzhou Baiyun and Yiwu. (trip.com)
For a buyer adding Yiwu to a Guangzhou/Canton Fair trip, flying usually saves a lot of time.
Train #
The fastest direct high-speed services currently take around 6 hours 53 minutes from Guangzhou South to Yiwu, with other trains taking considerably longer. (trip.com)
So the train is perfectly possible.
It is just a long travel day.
If your time in China is expensive, fly.
Yiwu works very well with a Shanghai trip #
From Shanghai Hongqiao, high-speed trains can reach Yiwu in roughly 1½ hours on the faster services, with many trains throughout the day. (trip.com)
So if your trip includes eastern China, a practical route can be:
Shanghai → Yiwu → factories/market → onward travel
rather than flying back and forth from Guangzhou.
Choose the route based on where your actual suppliers are.
Shipping Yiwu goods to Nigeria #
Your Yiwu warehouse consolidates the purchases.
Sea cargo from the Yiwu region commonly moves through the major eastern China port system, particularly Ningbo-Zhoushan, depending on your forwarder's route and sailing.
The Nigerian side does not become different because you bought in Yiwu.
For a normal commercial shipment, you still need to think about:
Form M
product regulation
shipping documents
Customs duty
clearing
delivery
before the goods arrive.
Use our shipping from China to Nigeria guide for the full route.
How many days should a Nigerian buyer spend in Yiwu? #
For one focused category:
1–2 days can work.
For several categories:
2–4 days is more realistic.
Do not try to “finish Yiwu” in a day.
You will spend the day walking and remember nothing.
A better plan:
Day 1: compare suppliers.
Day 2: return to the shortlist and negotiate.
Day 3: samples, payments, warehouse and unfinished categories.
The second visit to a booth is usually more valuable than the first.
Yiwu or Guangzhou? #
Use this simple rule.
Go to Yiwu when you need:
many small products,
lower quantities,
mixed orders,
general merchandise,
one consolidation warehouse.
Go deeper into Guangzhou when you need:
fashion,
specialised wholesale markets,
Guangdong suppliers,
Canton Fair access.
Go to Shenzhen when you need:
electronics,
components,
technology supply chains.
Go to the factory city when you need:
one product,
large quantity,
custom manufacturing,
the best factory-level price.
You do not have to choose one city forever.
Serious buyers use different cities for different products.
The short answer #
Yiwu is best for the Nigerian trader who wants to build a mixed order from many small-product suppliers.
Go with:
a product list
target Nigerian selling prices
warehouse address
agent/forwarder plan
and enough time to compare before buying.
Do not go with:
“I want to see what is cheap.”
There are millions of cheap things in Yiwu.
Your job is to find the ones that are:
legal in Nigeria + cheap to ship + good enough to sell + profitable after Customs.
That is the difference between a buying trip and shopping.
Before Yiwu, read which Chinese city makes what.
Then use the China-to-Nigeria landed cost guide before placing the order.
And if you are adding Yiwu to a Guangzhou trip, ChinaBridge can help arrange the buying route, warehouse and consolidation before you arrive.
Start here, it takes about two minutes
Tell us what you need. A person from the ChinaBridge desk will reply on WhatsApp, usually the same working day.
Buying, selling, shipping, a visa or the paperwork, it is the same desk. Nothing is payable to open a file, and nothing is due until you have agreed a plan in writing.
