Canton Fair hotels near Pazhou: where Nigerians should stay

Canton Fair hotels near Pazhou, Line 8 and central Guangzhou: where Nigerian buyers should stay, what to check before booking and how to avoid traffic.

The best hotel for the Canton Fair is one you can get to and from without a taxi. That means either walking distance from the Pazhou complex, a hotel on Guangzhou Metro Line 8, or one of the roughly sixty designated hotels where the organiser puts a badge counter and where a free shuttle usually runs to the halls. Everything else is a compromise with the evening traffic, which during fair week is the worst you will see in the city.

This page tells you where the options are, what each area is like, and what Nigerian traders have learned about choosing. It does not give prices, because fair week prices change by the day and any number printed here would be wrong by the time you read it.

The three kinds of place to stay #

Inside or beside the complex. The Westin Pazhou is Canton Fair Tower A, physically part of the venue. Around it in Pazhou and along the river in Haizhu district are a handful of large hotels, the Pazhou Lingnan Oriental and the Hotel Indigo Haixinsha among them. You walk to the halls. You pay for that, and they sell out for the first days of each phase months ahead. If you want one, book it the week the phase dates are announced, not in October.

On Metro Line 8 or Line 11. Pazhou station and Xingangdong station are the two stops for the complex, both on Line 8, and Line 11 also serves Pazhou. A hotel within a short walk of any Line 8 station puts you at the halls in under half an hour with no traffic and no taxi argument. Hotels in Tianhe around Zhujiang New Town, where the Grand Hyatt is, and in the older centre around Yuexiu, where the Garden Hotel, the China Hotel and the Dongfang Hotel sit, are the established business choices, and many of them run their own free shuttle to the complex during the fair.

Where Nigerians have always stayed. The area around Xiaobei and Sanyuanli in Yuexiu and Baiyun districts has been the base for African traders in Guangzhou for twenty years. It has Nigerian food, churches, forwarders who speak your language, and cheaper rooms. It is also forty minutes or more from Pazhou on a good day. Many first time traders stay there because a friend did. It works if you are spending most of your trip in the wholesale markets and only two days at the fair. It does not work if you are at the fair all week.

Does the Canton Fair have an official hotel booking service? #

Not one we can point you to as a single booking desk. What the organiser confirms is that badge registration counters are set up in around sixty designated hotels during the fair, and that shuttle buses run between the airport and the complex, while individual hotels run their own buses to the halls. In practice, the "official" hotel is any hotel with a badge counter in the lobby and a shuttle at the door, and the hotel will tell you if it is one when you ask. Ask before you book, in writing, and ask for the shuttle times.

How far ahead do you need to book? #

For the first two days of any phase, months. Pazhou sells out first, then Tianhe, then the rest of Line 8. By the last two days of a phase the same hotels have rooms again, and the changeover days between phases are quiet. If you are booking in late September for Phase 1 on 15 October, be realistic: the walkable hotels are probably gone, a Line 8 hotel is possible, and a hotel with a shuttle is your safety net.

Booking through the big international sites works from Nigeria, but two things bite. Some Chinese hotels do not accept foreign cards for the deposit, and some cheaper hotels are not licensed to register foreign guests, which matters because your passport must be registered with the police within 24 hours of arrival and a licensed hotel does it for you at check in. A hotel that cannot register you is not a bargain. Ask the question.

What does a Nigerian trader actually need from the room? #

Not much, and the things that matter are not the things on the booking site.

• A location you can describe to a taxi driver in Chinese. Have the hotel's name and address in Chinese characters on your phone and on a card. Drivers do not read English
• Somewhere to keep samples and cash. A room safe and a lobby that does not let strangers wander to the lifts
• Breakfast. Not for the food. For the hour at 7am when you plan the day with a coffee before the halls open at 9:30
• A lobby with WiFi that works. Your Nigerian SIM on roaming reaches WhatsApp and Google in China. Hotel WiFi does not, unless you have set up your phone before you left. Our first time guide covers that
• A badge counter downstairs. If you land late and the airport counter is closed, the hotel counter saves your first morning

Staying as a group #

If four or five traders travel together, a serviced apartment in Tianhe or Haizhu with three bedrooms often costs less per person than three hotel rooms, has a kitchen, and gives you a table to lay out samples. Chinese apartment platforms are hard to use from Nigeria without Chinese. This is one of the things our October delegation does: we hold rooms near the complex as a block and the group shares transport, an interpreter, and the evening trips to the markets.

Getting from the airport to the hotel #

Baiyun Airport to Pazhou is roughly 45 minutes to an hour by taxi outside the rush, and can be two hours in it. Metro Line 3 from the airport connects to Line 8, which is slower but predictable, and the organiser runs airport shuttles during the fair. Whatever you do, collect your buyer badge at the airport counter before you leave the terminal. Our badge guide explains why.

The short version #

Walkable if you can afford it and you booked early. Line 8 if you are practical. A shuttle hotel if you are late. Xiaobei if the markets matter more than the fair. Whichever it is, confirm the hotel registers foreign guests, get the address in Chinese, and get the badge at the airport.
