How to extend a China visa while you are still in China
To extend a China visa you apply at the local public security bureau at least seven days before expiry. What it needs, how long it takes, and the ceiling.

Important: ChinaBridge is a private Nigerian company, not the Chinese Embassy, Visa Application Service Centre, or any government agency. We simply help you prepare and review your application. You submit it yourself and pay official fees directly to the Centre. No agent can approve or guarantee a visa.
If your China visa is running out, you do not go to the Chinese Embassy in Abuja.
And you do not go back to the China Visa Application Centre.
Once you are already inside China, visa extensions are handled by China's:
Exit and Entry Administration
under the local:
Public Security Bureau — PSB.
For a Nigerian trader, that usually becomes important when:
production is late
an inspection fails
a supplier delays loading
or:
you simply need more time to finish the trip.
The process exists.
But you have to start early.
Who extends a China visa? #
China's National Immigration Administration says foreigners who need to extend their stay should apply to the:
exit-entry department of the local public security organ
in the place where they are staying.
In simple terms:
the immigration department of the local police.
Not:
your embassy
your supplier
or:
the original visa centre in Nigeria.
Where do you extend a visa in Guangzhou? #
For foreigners in Guangzhou, the current official address is:
Guangzhou Public Security Bureau
Exit and Entry Reception Hall for Foreigners
155 Jiefang South Road
Yuexiu District
Guangzhou
The Guangzhou Public Security Bureau currently lists its normal foreigner-service hours as:
Monday–Friday
9:00am–12:00pm
1:00pm–5:00pm.
Saturday is not a normal extension day.
The current Guangzhou notice says Saturday service is reserved for qualifying urgent cases.
Before travelling across Guangzhou, you can confirm current arrangements through:
12345
or China's immigration hotline:
12367.
When should you apply? #
This is the rule to remember:
apply seven days before your permitted stay expires.
China's Exit and Entry Administration Law says a visa holder who needs extra time should submit the application:
seven days before the expiry of the duration of stay stated on the visa.
The National Immigration Administration repeats the same requirement in its extension guide.
Do not read that as:
“Start thinking about it seven days before.”
Your documents need to be ready by then.
For a trader, the better rule is:
the moment you know the trip is slipping, start the extension process.
Do not wait until the final two days #
Suppose your legal stay ends:
30 October.
Do not arrive at the office:
28 October
with a supplier saying:
“Please help us explain.”
You have already missed the published application window.
And once the application is formally accepted, the authority can take up to the validity period of the acceptance receipt to make its decision.
National guidance provides for a processing period of up to roughly:
seven working days for visa matters after acceptance.
Give yourself room.
What does an M-business visa holder need? #
For an M visa, the National Immigration Administration says you need a:
certification letter from the local inviting and receiving entity or individual.
For most Nigerian traders, that means the Chinese:
supplier
factory
trading company
or:
business partner
that is hosting or receiving you in China.
The letter should explain why your stay needs to continue.
For example:
production completion was delayed
factory inspection needs to be repeated
commercial negotiations remain unfinished
or another genuine business reason.
If the Chinese company has not filed its records #
The NIA guidance says that where the inviting entity has not already filed its information with the authorities, it may also need to provide its:
registration certificate.
So do not ask the supplier for the support letter on the morning you are going to immigration.
Tell them early.
Their company documents may also be needed.
What documents should you prepare? #
Nationally, the basic application involves:
- valid passport
- Visa/Stay Permit/Residence Permit Application Form
- compliant photograph
- supporting documents explaining the extension request
- any additional material required locally.
Guangzhou's own published checklist is more specific.
It currently asks for:
- valid passport and visa, original and copy
- completed Foreigner Visa Application Form
- Guangdong entry-exit digital photograph
- the photo inspection receipt
- valid Overseas Personnel Temporary Accommodation Registration Form
- documents supporting the reason for the application
- any additional documents requested by police.
That Guangzhou list is the one to work from if you are staying there.
Your accommodation registration matters #
This catches travellers who never thought about it.
Guangzhou specifically asks for a valid:
Overseas Personnel Temporary Accommodation Registration Form.
If you stay in a hotel, the hotel normally handles foreign-guest registration with the authorities.
But when you need immigration services, make sure your registration is current and you can provide the required record.
If you are staying privately rather than in a hotel, make sure the local registration was actually completed.
An extension application is a bad time to discover:
“Nobody registered me.”
Our where to stay in Guangzhou guide explains the accommodation-registration side.
What about an L tourist visa? #
For an L visa, the NIA says the applicant should provide:
a travel itinerary
and, for a group tour:
a certification letter from the travel agency.
But for Nigerian passport holders, remember that China's current Nigeria rules temporarily do not accept normal individual L-tourist applications.
So most Nigerian buyers reading this page will be dealing with an:
M visa.
How much extra time can you get? #
This is where people misunderstand the rule.
China says:
the accumulated extension cannot exceed the original duration of stay printed on the visa.
Example:
Original M visa allows:
30 days per stay.
The maximum accumulated extension cannot exceed:
another 30 days.
If approved, your total current stay could therefore potentially reach:
60 days.
It does not mean the entire stay, including the original period, must remain under 30 days.
Another example #
Your M visa says:
Duration of Each Stay: 60 days.
The accumulated extension ceiling is:
60 additional days.
That does not mean you will automatically receive 60 days.
The authority can approve:
less
or:
none.
The law sets the ceiling.
It does not promise the maximum.
M visas also have a 180-day outer limit #
The NIA's category-specific guidance says an M-visa stay may be extended for:
no more than 180 days, while still being subject to the rule that the accumulated extension cannot exceed the original duration stated on the visa.
So if your original stay is:
30 days
the relevant extension ceiling is still:
30 days
not 180.
The 180-day figure does not magically turn a 30-day visa into six additional months.
An extension only fixes the current entry #
This is another important distinction.
China's regulations say an approved extension:
applies only to the current stay.
It does not change:
your original visa validity
or:
the number of entries printed on the visa.
For example:
you hold a one-year multiple-entry M visa.
You receive a 15-day extension during one visit.
That does not add 15 days to every future visit.
The next time you enter China, the original:
Duration of Each Stay
on the visa applies again.
What happens while your passport is being processed? #
This is useful to know.
If your application is accepted, the authority issues an:
acceptance receipt.
While the immigration authority keeps your passport for processing, Chinese regulations say you may remain in China legally using that receipt.
So do not panic because:
“Immigration has my passport and my original stay expires tomorrow.”
If the application was properly accepted in time, the official receipt is your evidence of lawful stay during processing.
Keep it safe.
Can you travel around China while they hold your passport? #
Be careful.
You may have the acceptance receipt, but hotels, airlines, train operators and other services can require identification.
Before making domestic travel plans while your passport is retained, ask the exit-entry office what the receipt will allow you to do in practice.
The smarter approach is usually:
stay put until the decision is finished.
What if the extension is refused? #
China's law is very clear.
If an extension is denied, the foreigner must:
leave China when the original permitted stay expires.
That is why applying early matters.
If you apply with time remaining and receive a refusal, you still have a chance to arrange your departure properly.
If you wait until the edge of expiry, you leave yourself no room.
Can you change your visa type inside China? #
Sometimes.
This needs correcting because the answer is not simply:
“No, you must always leave China.”
China has a separate legal process for:
visa change.
The regulations say a foreigner may apply for a change of visa when, for example:
- the purpose of stay changes
- the person qualifies for certain entry conveniences
- a new passport is being used
- objective circumstances require someone to separate from a group tour.
The National Immigration Administration even publishes requirements for changing to an:
M visa.
Can someone change to an M visa inside China? #
The NIA says an applicant seeking a change to an M visa should submit:
a certification letter from the inviting entity.
Where approved, a new visa can be issued with:
zero, single, double or multiple entries
with an entry-validity period of up to:
one year
and a stay of up to:
180 days.
But do not read this as:
“Anyone can arrive on one visa and freely swap it for another.”
It is an application.
The authorities decide whether the circumstances qualify.
Extension and visa change are different #
Remember:
Extension
More time on the current stay.
Visa change
A separate process because the purpose or circumstances have changed.
Residence permit
A different mechanism again for people who qualify for longer-term residence, such as many Z-work, X1-study and family cases.
Do not ask your supplier:
“Can you convert my M visa?”
Go to the Exit and Entry Administration and ask what procedure fits your actual situation.
Their answer is the one that matters.
How much does an extension cost? #
China has national visa-fee schedules, but the final amount can depend on:
nationality
reciprocity rules
and:
the specific document being issued.
National Immigration Administration material lists fees for foreign visa services and notes that reciprocal-country rules can apply.
Because of that, do not rely on a random blog saying:
“Every extension costs exactly RMB 160.”
Ask the Guangzhou Exit and Entry Administration what applies to your Nigerian passport and application.
Take the payment method they tell you to use.
What happens if you just overstay? #
You become illegally resident/staying in China.
China's Exit and Entry Administration Law says an illegal stay can result in:
a warning
and, for serious circumstances:
RMB 500 per day
up to:
RMB 10,000
or:
5–15 days detention.
That is already enough reason not to treat the deadline casually.
Does every overstay create a five-year ban? #
No.
This needs accurate wording.
Article 62 says a foreigner who is formally repatriated may be prohibited from entering China for:
one to five years from the date of repatriation.
That does not mean:
one day late = automatic five-year ban.
But an overstay can escalate into much more serious immigration enforcement.
If your business depends on China, there is no sensible reason to take that risk.
A delayed container is not worth an immigration problem #
You may be thinking:
“The goods load next week. I just need five more days.”
Then apply properly.
Or leave.
The container can still ship.
Your supplier can send:
photos
video
inspection reports
documents
and:
Bill of Lading copies.
You do not need to become an overstayer just because you want to watch the container close.
Protect the ability to return to China.
The practical Guangzhou process #
If you know the trip needs more time:
1. Check your legal exit date #
Use the Duration of Each Stay, not the overall visa validity.
Our China visa validity guide shows how to count the days.
2. Start before the seven-day deadline #
Do not wait.
3. Contact the Chinese inviting company #
Ask for the certification/support letter.
4. Confirm your accommodation registration #
You need the Guangzhou Temporary Accommodation Registration Form.
5. Prepare the application documents #
Passport.
Visa copy.
Application form.
Required Guangdong photograph and inspection receipt.
Invitation/supporting letter.
Accommodation registration.
6. Go to 155 Jiefang South Road #
Use the foreigner Exit and Entry Reception Hall.
7. Keep the acceptance receipt #
That document matters while immigration holds your passport.
8. Wait for the decision #
Processing can take up to the permitted receipt period.
9. If approved, read the new dates immediately #
Do not guess how much time they gave you.
10. If refused, leave on time #
Do not turn a business delay into an immigration offence.
The extension checklist #
Before going to the office:
TIME
✓ More than seven days left?
PASSPORT
✓ Original and copy?
VISA
✓ Copy available?
FORM
✓ Application form ready?
PHOTO
✓ Guangdong entry-exit photo and receipt?
ACCOMMODATION
✓ Current registration form?
BUSINESS LETTER
✓ Chinese supplier/inviting entity explains why more time is needed?

✓ Can you leave on time if extension is refused?
If the last answer is:
no,
your travel plan is already too tight.
The short answer #
To extend a China visa while you are already in China:
go to the local Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Bureau.
For Guangzhou, the current foreigner office is:
155 Jiefang South Road, Yuexiu District.
Apply:
seven days before your current permitted stay expires.
For an M-business visa, you will need a supporting letter from your local Chinese inviting or receiving company, along with the normal passport, application, photograph and locally required documents.
In Guangzhou, that also includes a valid:
Temporary Accommodation Registration Form.
And remember the ceiling:
the accumulated extension cannot exceed the original duration of stay printed on your visa.
If your original stay is 30 days, think:
up to another 30 days at most, if approved.
Not indefinite extensions.
For the day-counting rule, read China visa validity and duration of stay.
For repeat trips, use multiple-entry China visa for Nigerians.
