An air waybill for China to Nigeria shipping identifies your air cargo and records its carriage arrangements. It helps you check the shipment details, follow its movement and communicate with the forwarder handling your goods.

For Nigerian importers, the useful question is what the document confirms at each stage. Receiving an AWB copy, seeing a departure update and getting permission to collect cargo are separate events.

This guide explains master and house air waybills, the details to check before dispatch, tracking numbers and the questions to ask before collecting your goods.

What is an air waybill, and what does it prove? #

An air waybill, usually shortened to AWB, is a transport document used for goods moving by air. IATA explains its role in the contract of carriage between the shipper and airline.

An AWB is non-negotiable and is not a document of title. Passing its PDF to someone does not transfer ownership of the goods. If you are comparing air and sea paperwork, read our bill of lading guide for China imports.

Keep the issued copy for your shipment records, but check the current transport status separately. A prepared document does not establish that the goods have departed.

An electronic air waybill, or e-AWB, uses electronic carriage records under the relevant arrangements. Ask the forwarder which copies and supporting documents you need for your route.

What is the difference between a master and house air waybill? #

In a consolidated air shipment, two references may apply:

DHL Global Forwarding describes these two carriage relationships. Several house consignments can travel under one master air waybill.

For example, your four cartons of bags may share an airline shipment with other buyers' goods. Your house record should identify your own consignment, while the master record can cover the larger consolidation. The master weight therefore need not equal your four-carton weight.

Ask for the reference used to identify your goods within that consolidation. If the forwarder shares the MAWB number, ask how your house consignment connects to it.

Our guide to combining orders from China to Nigeria explains how to keep separate supplier orders identifiable.

What should you check before approving the AWB details? #

When reviewing an air waybill for China to Nigeria shipping, check the customer shipment record against the supplier's final documents.

Request a draft where available and confirm:

Use your commercial invoice and packing list for the comparison. A master record covering several buyers will naturally differ from your house-level documents; have the forwarder explain that difference.

If three suppliers delivered six cartons and the warehouse repacked them into four, update the package records before dispatch.

For batteries or power banks, discuss acceptance and documentation before booking. Our guide to shipping batteries from China covers that separate planning step.

Why can the chargeable weight differ from the gross weight? #

Gross weight is the physical weight of the packed cargo. Chargeable weight is the billing weight determined under the transport service's rules, which can account for the space occupied. Maersk explains this air cargo weight distinction.

Consider an illustrative shipment of four cartons weighing 15 kg each. The total gross weight is 60 kg. If the forwarder's assessment produces a chargeable weight of 72 kg, the two figures can both be correct.

Ask for the measured dimensions, calculation method, rounding and any minimum charge. Check whether the assessment applies to individual packages or the shipment as a whole. Our volumetric weight guide explains the calculation.

Then compare the billing weight with your shipping cost per kg quotation. Ask which charges sit outside that rate.

If the warehouse adds a pallet or changes the packaging, request the final measurements before accepting the revised freight bill.

How do you track an AWB from China to Nigeria? #

Start by identifying the service and the type of reference you received.

A standard airline AWB number contains 11 digits, commonly displayed as a three-digit prefix followed by eight digits. IATA's number-validation guidance confirms this format.

House references can use a forwarder's own format. Courier services also have their own numbering: DHL Express Nigeria's delivery portal requests a 10-digit waybill number.

Use the airline's official cargo tracker for the appropriate airline reference, or the forwarder's system for its house reference.

If tracking returns no result:

DHL's tracking guidance distinguishes shipment creation from later movement. Verify the actual status when a supplier sends a screenshot. Our Chinese supplier scams guide helps you assess suspicious shipping claims.

Does arrival in Nigeria mean the cargo is ready to collect? #

Arrival is one milestone. Cargo availability, Customs clearance, outstanding charges and collection authorization still need checking.

SAHCO's cargo FAQ explains that imported cargo requires Customs clearance and identifies destination charges such as handling fees. The applicable amount and process depend on your shipment and handling arrangements.

Before travelling to collect, ask:

Discuss the product certificates that may apply before dispatch.

For consolidated cargo, confirm the actual collection location. It may be the forwarder's warehouse after destination processing. Our China to Nigeria shipping time guide helps separate transport time from the wider delivery process.

What should you keep in your air shipment file? #

Keep the final AWB or house reference, invoice, packing list, accepted freight quotation, payment receipts and arrival instructions together.

Save written explanations of any changes to the package count, consignee, weight or route. When collecting, count the packages and record visible damage before completing the handover paperwork.

An AWB records transport arrangements. Use quality inspection in China to check product specifications before shipment, and include destination expenses in your landed cost calculation.

For your next shipment, prepare the product description, carton count, dimensions, packed weight and Nigerian delivery address. Use the ChinaBridge shipping enquiry page to discuss the route, document checks and delivery scope before the goods leave China.
