Telex release for China imports to Nigeria can help you collect sea freight without presenting the original paper bill of lading at destination, once the issuer's release conditions are satisfied.

But a supplier saying "telex done" does not tell you everything you need to know.

The origin office may have received a request while the Nigerian destination agent is still waiting for confirmation. Other documents, charges or clearance steps may also be outstanding.

What does telex release mean for a Nigerian importer? #

Telex release is an instruction from the bill issuer's origin office authorising the destination office to release cargo to the named consignee without requiring that consignee to present the original bill there.

A scanned bill or a PDF marked "surrendered" can support your records. Confirm that the release instruction has actually reached the destination office.

A sea waybill follows a different arrangement because it is non-negotiable from the outset. Labels such as "express release" can vary between providers, so ask which document and process apply to your shipment.

Who can request telex release for a China shipment? #

Ask the issuer who is authorised to request surrender and release. Depending on the arrangement, this may involve the shipper, forwarder or another authorised party.

Do not assume that paying the supplier gives you access to the carrier's release system.

Check the roles of the carrier and forwarder using our shipping company guide. Make sure your supplier identifies the party handling the origin request and the office handling release in Nigeria.

Traditional surrender involves returning the issued original bills under the issuer's requirements. Some carriers also offer approved electronic surrender procedures. Maersk's surrender guidance describes counter and online options.

If a bank holds the documents or the order uses a letter of credit, agree the procedure with the bank before changing the release arrangement.

How do you arrange telex release step by step? #

Use this sequence when discussing telex release for China imports to Nigeria with your supplier or forwarder.

1. Identify the document and issuer.

Record the bill number, issuer, consignee, destination office and shipment references. Ask whether the document is an original bill, sea waybill or another approved transport document.

2. Confirm the surrender requirements.

Ask who must submit the request, what originals or authorisations are required, whether electronic surrender is available and what charges must be settled.

3. Complete the origin procedure.

The authorised party should follow the issuer's process and keep its acknowledgement. Confirm whether that acknowledgement records a submitted request or a completed release.

4. Check the Nigerian destination status.

Ask the destination office to confirm receipt of the release instruction and explain what remains before the delivery order and collection.

Keep your commercial invoice and packing list available for the wider clearance process. These documents serve different purposes from the release instruction.

What confirmation should your Nigerian agent provide? #

Ask for a clear status update tied to your actual bill reference.

Separate these four stages:

• Request submitted: the authorised party has asked for release.
• Issuer processed: the origin office has completed the applicable procedure.
• Destination received: the Nigerian office has received the instruction.
• Collection ready: the responsible agent confirms the remaining collection requirements have been met.

These are useful questions for tracking progress; the carrier may use different status labels.

Message you can send

Please confirm the release status for [bill of lading reference]. Has the issuer completed and sent the telex release instruction? Please provide the confirmation reference, named consignee and Nigerian destination contact. Ask the destination office to confirm receipt and list any outstanding requirements before collection.

How much does telex release cost and how long does it take? #

There is no single fee or guaranteed turnaround for every China-to-Nigeria shipment.

Request a written quote showing:

• The release or surrender fee and currency.
• Whether the fee applies per bill or on another basis.
• Any separate forwarder handling or destination delivery-order charge.
• Who pays each charge and whether it is already included.
• When the request can be submitted and the expected processing time.

Confirm timing before booking your truck. Supplier payment, carrier processing and destination confirmation may happen at different times.

If the vessel is close to arrival, ask who will follow up with each office and when you should expect the next update. Keep that contact in the same shipment folder as the release acknowledgement.

Why can cargo still be held after telex release? #

Telex release addresses the transport-document release requirement. Customs clearance, destination charges, delivery-order requirements and identity or agent-authority checks can still apply.

Check your carrier's current Nigerian procedure. For example, CMA CGM Nigeria's March 2026 delivery-order advisory directs import delivery-order and cargo-release requests through its My Customer Service portal from 9 March 2026.

Use the procedure for your actual carrier.

Example: you have paid for 60 bags, and the supplier sends a surrendered-bill PDF. Your agent still cannot arrange collection. Ask which requirement is outstanding: destination release confirmation, a house-bill instruction, payment, clearance or a delivery order.

Check the release arrangement before arrival #

Before the vessel arrives, keep one shipment folder containing:

• The bill copy and relevant house or master references.
• The supplier and bill issuer's contacts.
• The named consignee and destination agent details.
• The surrender acknowledgement and release confirmation.
• Outstanding charges, clearance requirements and collection deadlines.

Match those records to the actual shipment. Tell the supplier early if the consignee details need correction.
