Bill of Lading for China Imports to Nigeria
Your bill of lading for China imports to Nigeria connects the sea shipment to its parties, cargo details and transport arrangement.
The supplier says the goods have shipped. You receive a PDF, keep it on your phone and wait for arrival. Later, the destination agent asks for an original document or release confirmation that nobody arranged.
A wrong consignee name or an unresolved release instruction can create another delay just as you are preparing to collect the goods.
Check the draft before issue and agree the release arrangement before arrival.
This guide explains the details Nigerian buyers should review with their supplier, forwarder and clearing agent.
What is a bill of lading and why does it matter? #
A bill of lading, commonly shortened to B/L or BL, is a transport document issued by a carrier or an authorised issuer acting in the relevant carriage arrangement.
It records the shipment and serves as a receipt for the cargo and evidence of the carriage contract. A negotiable bill can also function as a document of title.
The document type and its terms matter when arranging release.
Hapag-Lloyd's bill of lading overview explains its main functions.
Your commercial invoice records the sale and values. Your packing list records the physical packages and contents.
Review them together, while keeping their different purposes clear.
Which fields should you check in the draft? #
Ask for a readable draft early enough to correct the shipping instructions.
Check:
- Issuer's name and document reference.
- Shipper's correct company details.
- Consignee details and any agreed bank instructions.
- Notify party's name and working contact details.
- Port of loading and port of discharge.
- Place of receipt and final delivery place, where shown.
- Vessel and voyage details, where applicable.
- Goods description and package count.
- Gross weight and volume.
- Container and seal references, where applicable.
- Freight terms and document type.
- Relevant dates and shipment notations.
- Applicable import references requested by the handling parties.
The consignee is the party designated to receive the shipment under the document. The notify party receives shipment notifications; that entry alone does not establish a right to collect the cargo.
For bank-financed orders, ask the bank and clearing agent to confirm the consignee wording before approval.
Compare the goods description with the accepted supplier order.
Keep quantities and package counts distinct. An invoice for 60 bags and a bill showing three cartons can describe the same shipment if the supporting packing records explain it.
What is the difference between a house and master bill of lading? #
When a forwarder arranges sea freight, there may be two document layers.
Master bill of lading
The shipping line issues the master bill to its contracting customer. In a forwarder-arranged shipment, that customer may be the forwarder or a non-vessel operating common carrier, often called an NVOCC.
House bill of lading
The forwarder or NVOCC issues a house bill to its customer for the shipment it undertakes to carry.
The parties named on the two bills can therefore differ. Your company may appear on the house bill while the forwarder's destination agent appears on the master.
iContainers explains the arrangement in its house and master bill guide.
For shared-container cargo, ask which reference identifies your consignment, who handles its release and where you collect it.
The master may cover other customers' cargo too. Confirm that your house shipment is correctly connected to it.

A simple document review example for three cartons #
This example continues the 60-bag order used in our invoice and packing list guides. It is a review checklist, not an issued bill of lading.
Underlying shipment records
- Product: Canvas tote bags, model BAG-01.
- Goods quantity: 60 pieces.
- Cartons: Three, containing 20 bags each.
- Carton measurements: 60 x 40 x 40 cm each.
- Gross weight: 10 kg per carton, 30 kg total.
- Carton volume: 0.288 CBM total.
These figures describe the cartons before any added pallets or outer packing. Use the final packed configuration, weight and volume on the actual transport document.
Details to confirm with the issuer
- Shipper and consignee: Correct details for the agreed arrangement.
- Notify party: The confirmed contact.
- Ports and delivery place: The actual booked route.
- House bill reference: Assigned by its issuer.
- Related master and container references: Confirmed by the forwarder where applicable.
- Document type and release method: Agreed before issue.
If the three cartons are packed onto a pallet, ask how the package count and contents will be described. Keep the packing list consistent.
Original bill, sea waybill or telex release: which do I need? #
Agree this with the supplier, issuer, destination agent and bank where relevant.
Original bill of lading
Follow the issuer's requirements for presentation or surrender of originals and any necessary endorsements. A PDF copy does not automatically satisfy an original-document requirement.
Sea waybill
A sea waybill is non-negotiable and does not function as a document of title. Release is to the named consignee under the issuer's procedures, without presenting original sea waybill papers.
Telex release
This is a release arrangement associated with an original bill. Once the issuer's conditions are met, an instruction allows destination release without the consignee presenting the original there.
Maersk's bill of lading and sea waybill guide explains the differences.
Ask the destination agent to confirm it has received and accepted the applicable release instruction.
A supplier saying "telex done" is a reason to verify the status.
If your bank requires original negotiable documents, obtain its approval before changing the arrangement. Confirm any document or release charges in writing.
How does the bill fit into Nigerian port clearance? #
Document release, Customs clearance and physical cargo collection involve related checks.
Having a released bill does not complete the Customs process. Your clearing agent must prepare the applicable import records and meet the requirements for your shipment.
Read our Form M guide and product certificate guide before dispatch.
Carrier procedures also differ. For example, Maersk's Nigeria import guidance sets out delivery-order procedures for original bills and telex or sea waybill shipments.
Ask your actual carrier or destination agent for its current checklist and submission route.
For consolidated cargo, confirm the forwarder's warehouse-release requirements as well.
Our Apapa port clearing guide explains the wider process for cargo handled through that port. Use a clearing agent experienced with China goods to coordinate the relevant documents.
Check the final bill and release before arrival #
After approving the draft, compare the issued document with the agreed version.
Confirm:
- The correct parties and shipment details remain.
- The document is final and its shipment status is understood.
- Required originals or release instructions are being handled.
- The destination agent acknowledges the arrangement.
- Applicable charges and import documents are ready.
- Collection responsibilities and delivery arrangements are clear.
Verify references through the issuer's official channels. A house bill may need to be checked with its forwarder rather than through a shipping line's public tracking page.
If a correction is needed, contact the issuer promptly. Ask about amendment procedures, deadlines and charges; keep the earlier and corrected records together.
