Demurrage and Detention in Nigeria: Import Guide
Understand demurrage and detention in Nigeria. Check free time, terminal storage, daily charges and empty-container return before your China shipment arrives.

Demurrage and Detention in Nigeria: Import Guide
Demurrage and detention in Nigeria can increase your import costs after the goods have already arrived.
Your container is waiting for release. A document needs correction, a payment is still being processed or the truck is not ready. After collection, the empty container remains at your warehouse while you arrange unloading and return.
Those delays can create different charges with different deadlines.
Plan both cargo collection and empty-container return before the vessel arrives.
For a Nigerian buyer importing from China, knowing the last free day is as important as knowing the freight price.
What is the difference between demurrage, detention and storage? #
These charges relate to different parts of the container movement.
Demurrage
A carrier charge for keeping its container inside the port, terminal or depot beyond the agreed free time.
Detention
A carrier charge for keeping its container outside the port, terminal or depot beyond the agreed free time.
Terminal storage
A charge for using terminal or storage facilities beyond the applicable free period. It may be invoiced separately from the carrier's equipment charges.
Combined demurrage and detention
Some carrier arrangements use one combined period covering the container's time inside and outside the terminal.
Maersk's detention and demurrage terms explain these distinctions.
Ask who issued each invoice, what service it covers and which dates were used. A carrier invoice and a terminal storage invoice can cover the same days while charging for different services.
Our shipping company guide explains the roles of the shipping line, forwarder and other providers.
How are free days counted on Nigerian imports? #
Free time is the agreed period before the relevant charge applies. The rules depend on the carrier, terminal, booking and container type.
Request a written breakdown showing:
- The event that starts each period.
- The number of free days.
- Whether days are calendar or working days.
- The last free day for each charge.
- The event that stops the clock.
- Daily rates and any increasing rate bands.
- Applicable taxes and other exclusions.
For example, OOCL's Nigeria charging rules use calendar days, including weekends and national holidays, and distinguish carrier charges from terminal storage.
Check the rules for your actual shipment.
Extra carrier free time does not automatically extend terminal storage free time.
Keep both deadlines visible. Confirm whether the discharge or collection day counts and how a part-day is treated.
APM Terminals publishes its Apapa tariffs and terms. Your carrier and terminal should confirm the conditions applicable to your container.
A simple example of delay charges #
This example assumes one container, separate carrier demurrage and detention charges, and separately billed terminal storage.
All amounts are hypothetical and shown in Nigerian naira. The chargeable days are assumed to have been confirmed after the relevant free periods.
- Three demurrage days at N15,000 per day: N45,000.
- Two detention days at N10,000 per day: N20,000.
- Three terminal storage days at N8,000 per day: N24,000.
Total assumed delay charges: N89,000.
Any applicable tax and other services would be checked separately.
If your carrier uses combined demurrage and detention, calculate that combined charge under its terms. Avoid adding an invented separate charge for the same carrier period.
Where rates increase in bands, calculate each band separately. Multiplying every day by one rate can give the wrong result.
Add confirmed charges to your landed cost calculation so you can see their effect on your selling margin.
What should you prepare before the goods arrive? #
Give your clearing agent and forwarder the shipment documents early enough to identify problems.
Check the bill of lading and release arrangement, including consignee details and any original-document or electronic-release requirements.
Make sure the commercial invoice and packing list describe the actual shipment.
Confirm the applicable Form M requirements and product certificates before dispatch.
Use a clearing agent experienced with China imports and agree who handles each action.
Request a short status update covering:
- Documents received and any corrections needed.
- Customs processing and outstanding requirements.
- Carrier release and payment status.
- Terminal collection readiness.
- Truck availability and planned collection.
- Confirmed free-time deadlines.
Keep enough funds available for the agreed charges. A freight payment made in China may leave destination costs still payable.

How should you plan haulage and empty-container return? #
Arrange the return plan when booking the truck.
Confirm the authorised empty-return depot, its acceptance conditions and any required appointment or booking reference.
Your receiving warehouse needs space, labour and equipment ready to unload. Include the onward journey and return movement when planning delivery to Aba, Onitsha, Kano or Port Harcourt.
Read our container haulage guide before agreeing transport responsibilities.
Ask the transporter:
- Who arranges and pays for the empty return.
- When unloading will be completed.
- How the depot's acceptance will be confirmed.
- What happens if the assigned depot cannot receive the container.
- Who supplies the return receipt and event record.
For an arrangement ending at empty gate-in, unloading the goods does not complete the return requirement. Obtain evidence of accepted return, showing the container reference, depot and date.
If the driver reports a refused return, request the details immediately and contact the carrier for instructions. Obtain approval before using another depot.
For shared-container cargo, ask how destination handling, storage and any passed-through equipment costs are allocated. Our consolidation guide explains what to agree with the forwarder.
Can you request extra free time or challenge an incorrect bill? #
Ask about extra free time before booking or arrival if the planned journey and unloading schedule need it.
Some carriers offer paid extensions. Hapag-Lloyd's Additional Freetime service is one example.
Confirm availability for your shipment, the purchase deadline and which charge the extension covers. Compare the extension price with the likely delay cost.
Get the approval and revised dates in writing.
For an invoice review, collect:
- Container and bill of lading references.
- Booking confirmation and agreed free time.
- Discharge, collection and empty-return records.
- The invoice and its calculation.
- Any approved extension.
- Evidence of a hold, closure or refused depot return.
- Relevant messages and payment records.
Identify the specific error, such as a wrong return date, incorrect rate band or approved extension omitted from the calculation.
Submit the request through the issuer's official process. Hapag-Lloyd's Nigeria FAQ provides guidance on shipment-specific free time, disputes and depot requests.
Ask how the review affects release, payment and any continuing charges. Keep planning the next required movement while the request is considered.
Check every deadline before accepting the shipping arrangement #
Request a container-level summary before committing to the shipment.
Record:
- Carrier charge structure: separate or combined.
- Carrier free-time dates and rate bands.
- Terminal storage dates and charges.
- Required cargo-release documents.
- Collection and unloading arrangements.
- Approved empty-return location.
- The person responsible for each action.
- Evidence needed to close the return record.
