The China visa form: filling COVA without the usual mistakes

The China visa form is filled online before you attend. Which website is the real one, the fields that cause refusals, and how to edit an application.

Important: ChinaBridge is a private Nigerian company, not the Chinese Embassy, Visa Application Service Centre, or any government agency. We simply help you prepare and review your application. You submit it yourself and pay official fees directly to the Centre. No agent can approve or guarantee a visa.

The China visa form is now filled online before you go anywhere near the centre, and that change, in place since 28 April 2025, is the best thing to happen to Nigerian applicants in years. It also introduced a new way to go wrong: there are two different web addresses in circulation for the form, one of which would not load securely when we checked. This page is how the online process works, which address to trust, and the specific fields that cause avoidable refusals.

How the online process works now #

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria announced on 24 April 2025 that from 28 April 2025 applicants complete the form and upload their documents online first. Only when the application status changes to show that the passport is wanted do you attend the centre in person to hand it in and, where required, give fingerprints.

The practical effect is that a missing document is caught while you are sitting at home, rather than after an hour in Lekki traffic. It also means you cannot simply turn up with a stack of paper and expect to be processed.

You can log back in and edit the form or add documents while it is under review, right up until the point the passport is requested. After that, it is fixed.

Which website is the real one? #

Be careful here. The Nigerian pages direct applicants to a COVA form at cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn. When we opened that address on 20 September 2026 it returned a certificate error. The address used by Chinese missions elsewhere is cova.mfa.gov.cn, without the "cs". Separately, the visa centre runs its own portal on visaforchina.cn for uploading documents and tracking status.

Visa websites are among the most imitated pages on the internet, and a Nigerian applicant typing a half remembered address into a search bar is exactly who a fake site is built for. So the rule is simple and applies to this page as much as any other: do not copy a visa link from a blog. Open the Consulate General in Lagos or the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria site directly, find the visa section, and click the link they publish that day. If a site asks you to pay the visa fee online by card, close it. The fee is paid at the centre, by debit card, as our Lagos centre page explains.

The fields that cause trouble #

The inviter's name. The Abuja centre's own applicant guide flags this specifically: the inviter's name on the form must match the invitation verification form and the invitation letter exactly. One character out, one missing "Co., Ltd", one guess at a spelling, and the file reads as assembled rather than real. Copy and paste it from the letter.

The itinerary. This is where vague applications die. "Business" is not an itinerary. Name the city, the dates, and what you are doing on them: arriving Guangzhou on the 14th, Canton Fair phase two from the 23rd, factory visit in Foshan on the 28th, departing on the 30th. It should match the dates on your invitation letter and your flight booking, because the officer will read all three.

Purpose of visit. Match it to the visa category you are applying for. If you have selected the M business visa, the purpose is commercial: meeting suppliers, attending a fair, inspecting goods. Our page on which visa you need explains why the tourist visa is the harder road for a Nigerian passport, not the easier one.

Previous travel and previous visas. Answer honestly. A previous refusal or a previous Chinese visa is not disqualifying; an inconsistency between what you wrote and what is stamped in the passport is a different matter.

Funding. Who is paying for the trip has to agree with your bank statement and with the source of funds line in the invitation letter. Our bank statement page covers what that document has to show.

The photograph and the passport #

The photograph is a recent colour photo on a white background, front view, bare head, per the embassy and consulate guidelines. The Abuja centre's guide describes a two inch front facing photograph on a white background and says hats, earrings and other jewellery are not allowed. Our photo page has the detail and the measurement caveat.

The passport needs at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, and you submit a photocopy of the data page with it.

A sensible order of work #

  1. Get the invitation letter first. Everything on the form has to agree with it.
  2. Book a refundable flight and a hotel. The published document list asks for both.
  3. Request six months of bank statements from your bank, stamped.
  4. Get the photograph taken to specification.
  5. Then fill the form, with the invitation letter open beside you, copying names rather than typing them.
  6. Upload and wait for the status to ask for the passport.
  7. Attend the centre with everything original, plus two working debit cards.

The whole thing takes about a week of small errands and then four working days of processing, which is the normal time on the official guidelines. Our timing page explains why you should not leave it to the month of the fair.

If you get stuck on the form #

The centre publishes an email address and takes calls, and it also sells an optional form filling service at the counter. That is the legitimate version of paying somebody for help: a service sold by the centre itself, priced on its own page, with no promises attached to it. Anyone outside the centre who guarantees you a visa is selling something nobody can deliver, and our page on visa agents explains how to tell the difference.
