China visa photo requirements for Nigerian applicants
The China visa photo must be recent, colour, white background, front view and bare head. The measurement, what is not allowed, and how to get it right.

Important: ChinaBridge is a private Nigerian company, not the Chinese Embassy, Visa Application Service Centre, or any government agency. We simply help you prepare and review your application. You submit it yourself and pay official fees directly to the Centre. No agent can approve or guarantee a visa.
The China visa photograph is one of the cheapest parts of the application.
It is also one of the easiest places to make an unnecessary mistake.
For a Nigerian applicant, the safe instruction to give the photo studio is:
China visa photo
33mm wide × 48mm high
white background
front facing
taken within the last six months
and:
digital copy + printed copies.
That will put you much closer to what the Chinese visa system expects than simply asking for:
“passport photo.”
What do the Nigeria pages ask for? #
Nigeria-specific China visa guidance asks for a:
recent colour passport photograph
with:
white background
front view
and:
bare head.
The 2026 Canton Fair visa notice from the Nigeria Visa Application Centre describes it as:
a 2-inch photo with a white background.
The wider official China Visa Application Service Centre specification gives the actual paper-photo dimensions as:
33mm × 48mm.
So if your photographer asks:
“Which size?”
say:
33 × 48mm China visa photo.
What is the digital photo size? #
For the online application, the visa system uses a digital image.
The official Visa Application Service Centre photo specification gives:
Width: 354–420 pixels
Height: 472–560 pixels
Format: JPEG
Colour: 24-bit RGB
Typical file size: 40–120 KB.
Current Visa Centre FAQ pages also say the image must be:
recent
white or near-white background
and:
JPEG format.
Ask the studio for the digital file.
Do not only collect the prints.
How recent should the photo be? #
The official Visa Application Service Centre standard says:
within the last six months.
So do not use:
your old passport photo
your NIN photo
or:
a visa photo from three years ago
just because you still look similar.
Take a fresh one.
What should your face look like? #
The official specification requires you to face the camera directly.
Your:
eyes should be open
face fully visible
expression natural
and:
head centred.
The standard also says the face should not be excessively turned or tilted.
This is a visa photograph.
Not a LinkedIn portrait.
Do not angle your face because:
“This is my good side.”
Can you smile? #
Use a neutral, natural expression.
Do not use:
big smile
closed eyes
pouting
or:
posed facial expressions.
The objective is a clear biometric-style image that matches you easily to your passport.
What background should you use? #
Use:
plain white.
The current official digital-photo guidance allows white or close-to-white backgrounds.
For a Nigerian photo studio, keep it simpler:
ask for pure white.
Avoid:
- grey
- cream
- blue
- patterned wall
- curtain
- visible shadow
A white background costs nothing extra.
Use it.
Can you wear glasses? #
The official photo specification says applicants should not wear:
thick-framed glasses
or:
tinted glasses.
Some Visa Centre instructions are even stricter and tell applicants not to wear glasses at all for the photograph.
So the safest rule is:
take the glasses off.
That removes:
reflection
frame obstruction
and:
tinted-lens problems
in one step.
What about earrings and jewellery? #
Nigeria Visa Centre material for applicants has instructed applicants not to wear:
jewellery
including:
earrings
for the photograph.
Wider Visa Centre guidance also advises against jewellery for the digital image.
So keep it simple.
No:
- earrings
- necklace
- large facial jewellery
- accessories that distract from the face
You are not dressing for the photograph.
You are making identification easy.
Can you wear a hat or head covering? #
The normal rule is:
no hat or headgear.
But the official China visa photo specification allows religious headwear where necessary, provided it does not cover the face.
The full facial outline should remain visible.
If the head covering is not religious or otherwise necessary, remove it.
What about hair? #
Do not let hair cover:
the eyes
major parts of the face
or:
the facial outline.
Some Visa Centre guidance also asks applicants to ensure the:
forehead and ears are clearly visible.
You do not need to change your normal hairstyle dramatically.
Just keep the face unobstructed.
What should you wear? #
Wear normal clothing that contrasts with the white background.
Avoid:
white or near-white tops
because they can disappear into the background.
Some current Visa Centre document guides specifically tell applicants not to wear white or nearly white clothing for the photo.
A dark or medium-coloured shirt works well.
What usually gets the photo rejected? #
The most common avoidable problems are:
Wrong background
Grey or cream instead of white.
Old photograph
Taken years ago.
Wrong size
Normal Nigerian passport-photo format instead of China visa format.
Face at an angle
Not looking directly at the camera.
Glasses reflection
Eyes not clearly visible.
Jewellery or headwear
Against the photo instructions.
Poor cropping
Head too large, too small or off-centre.
Low-quality home printing
Blurry, pixelated or badly cut.
All of those can be avoided in ten minutes at a competent studio.
Printed or digital: which do you need? #
Get both.
China's Nigeria application process is online first, so you need the digital image for the application.
The Visa Centre's current system expects applicants to upload the photo as part of the online form.
But the wider official standard also provides a specific printed-photo size of:
33mm × 48mm.
And if the online upload repeatedly fails, the Visa Centre system may instruct you to bring a compliant physical photo to the centre so staff can assist with uploading it.
So the safest approach is:
digital file + printed copies.
What happens if the online photo will not upload? #
Do not keep resizing randomly until the face is distorted.
Current Visa Centre guidance says that if the system rejects your photo repeatedly, it may tell you to bring a compliant recent photo to the centre.
The centre can then assist with the upload.
Before that happens, check:
JPEG format
correct dimensions
40–120 KB
white background
and:
recent photograph.
Those are the first things to fix.
Do not upload somebody else's photo by mistake #
This sounds obvious.
But the official Visa Centre FAQ specifically warns applicants to check that the uploaded image actually belongs to the person named in the application.
If the wrong person's photo is uploaded, the centre can require a new application.
This can happen when an agent is processing several people at once.
Check the form before submission.
How many printed copies should you take? #
The application itself does not mean you need six prints.
But prints are cheap.
For a Nigerian trader heading to:
China visa centre
Canton Fair registration
or:
other travel paperwork,
having several identical copies is useful.
Ask the studio for:
4–6 printed copies
plus:
the digital JPEG.
You will probably use them.
What should you tell the studio? #
Say this:
“China visa photograph. 33mm by 48mm. White background. Front facing. No jewellery or glasses. I need printed copies and the JPEG file.”
That is enough for a competent photographer.
If they say:
“Passport size is passport size,”
find another studio.
Different countries use different visa-photo formats.
Check the photo before leaving #
Before paying, look at it.
Check:
BACKGROUND
Pure white?
FACE
Straight to camera?
EYES
Open and clearly visible?
GLASSES
Removed?
JEWELLERY
Removed?
CROP
Head centred?
QUALITY
Sharp and properly lit?
DIGITAL FILE
Did they actually send it to you?
Do not leave the shop with only the prints.
Do not over-edit the photograph #
Do not ask the photographer to:
reshape your face
remove facial marks
change your skin heavily
or:
make you look younger.
The photograph should look like you.
Normal lighting and basic exposure correction are fine.
Changing identifying facial features defeats the purpose of the visa photo.
The digital file should not be a WhatsApp screenshot #
Ask the studio to send the original JPEG.
Do not:
screenshot it
save it from a compressed WhatsApp preview
or:
photograph the printed photo with another phone.
Those steps can reduce quality or change the dimensions.
Keep the original file.
Do not use your Nigerian passport photograph automatically #
Your passport photo may be:
the wrong dimensions
too old
or:
not available as the correct digital file.
Even if it looks similar, take a new China visa photograph.
It costs very little compared with:
visa centre fees + transport + hotel + flight bookings + your time.
There is no reason to create a problem over the cheapest document in the file.
The short answer #
For a China visa application in Nigeria, use:
33mm × 48mm printed photograph
with:
white background
front-facing face
natural expression
no glasses
no jewellery
and:
no ordinary hat/head covering.
The photo should be from the last six months.
For the online version, use the original JPEG in the China visa system's required dimensions and file-size range.
Get:
digital file + 4–6 prints
at the same sitting.
Then stop thinking about the photograph and focus on the documents that matter more.
Use our China visa documents checklist.
Then follow the China visa application form guide.
