L visa or M visa for China? What a Nigerian trader needs
L visa or M visa for China: the tourist visa asks Nigerians to travel in a group of more than five. The business visa is the trader's route, and here is why.

Important: ChinaBridge is a private Nigerian company, not the Chinese Embassy, Visa Application Service Centre, or any government agency. We simply help you prepare and review your application. You submit it yourself and pay official fees directly to the Centre. No agent can approve or guarantee a visa.
If you are travelling from Nigeria to China to:
buy goods
attend Canton Fair
meet suppliers
visit factories
or:
negotiate orders,
the visa that normally matches your trip is the M visa.
The L visa is for tourism.
And for Nigerian passport holders, that difference matters because China's current Nigeria-specific rules do not treat individual tourist applications the same way they treat business travellers.
Choose the visa that matches what you are actually going to China to do.
What is the M visa? #
The Chinese Consulate-General defines the M visa as the visa for:
commercial and trade activities.
For a Nigerian trader, that includes trips such as:
- Canton Fair
- supplier meetings
- factory visits
- product sourcing
- trade negotiations
- commercial inspections
- order discussions
If the reason for the trip is business, the M visa is the natural category.
It does not give you permission to take employment in China.
Employment belongs under the Z visa.
What does a Nigerian need for an M visa? #
The current Nigeria guidance requires the normal application documents, including:
- passport with at least six months validity
- blank visa pages
- completed visa application
- recent passport photograph
For the M visa, the supporting file includes:
Invitation Letter (TE) or Verification Letter of Invitation, together with the invitation from the Chinese party, for first-time visitors.
Non-first-time visitors to China are currently exempt from providing the TE/Verification Letter itself.
The application also requires:
six months of bank statements
from either the applicant or the company,
plus:
an itinerary including paid flight tickets and hotel bookings.
The consular officer may ask for additional documents.
What should the invitation contain? #
The Chinese invitation should clearly identify:
you
with your name, gender, date of birth and passport number.
It should explain:
why you are travelling
when you will arrive and leave
which places you will visit
your itinerary
your relationship with the inviter
and:
who is paying for the trip.
The inviter's:
name/company
address
contact details
company seal
and:
signature
should also be included.
For a sourcing trip, do not accept a vague invitation that simply says:
“We invite Mr X to China for business.”
Make the trip easy to understand.
Use our China visa invitation letter guide.
What is the L visa? #
The L visa is China's tourist visa.
That sounds simpler.
For a Nigerian applicant, it usually is not.
China's May 2026 Nigeria guidance says Nigerian citizens travelling for tourism should use the organised group-tour route and that individual tourist visa applications are temporarily not being accepted.
The current Chinese-language guidance says the group should contain five or more people and requires a tourism invitation from an authorised Chinese travel agency.
The English-language visa page still carries the older wording:
“more than 5 people.”
So if you genuinely intend to use an L group-tour application, confirm the required headcount directly with the Visa Application Centre before paying a travel agency.
The important point for traders is simpler:
individual tourism is not the easy alternative to the M visa.
Going to China alone to buy goods? #
That is exactly why trying to force the trip into an L application makes little sense.
If you are one person travelling to:
Guangzhou
Yiwu
Shenzhen
or:
Canton Fair
to source products, the purpose is commercial.
Use the category designed for commercial travel:
M visa.
Do not create a tourism story for a business trip.
Can you visit Canton Fair on an L visa? #
The official visa descriptions say:
L = tourism
and:
M = commercial and trade activities.
Canton Fair is a commercial trade exhibition.
So if Canton Fair is the reason you are travelling, the M category matches the purpose cleanly.
There is no benefit in creating an L-tourism file and then building the itinerary around factories, wholesalers and trade fairs.
Use our Canton Fair invitation guide if the Fair is your main reason for travelling.
Can you do sightseeing on an M visa? #
A business traveller can obviously spend free time seeing Guangzhou, Shenzhen or another city.
The purpose of your visa does not mean you must sit inside a factory every hour of the trip.
The important thing is that the main purpose stated in your application is genuine.
If your main purpose is commercial, apply for the commercial category.
M visa or F visa? #
These are also confused.
The F visa is for:
exchanges, visits, inspection tours and other non-commercial activities.
The M visa is for:
commercial and trade activities.
So:
supplier negotiation → M
buying goods → M
trade fair → M
commercial sourcing → M
A non-commercial institutional or exchange visit may fit F instead.
What about the other Chinese visa categories? #
Most Nigerian traders only need to remember a few.
M visa
Commercial and trade activities.
L visa
Tourism.
F visa
Non-commercial exchanges and visits.
Z visa
Employment in China.
X1/X2
Long-term and short-term study.
Q1/Q2
Family visits involving Chinese citizens or permanent residents.
S1/S2
Visits to foreign family members working or studying in China, and certain private affairs.
C visa
International transport crew.
D visa
Permanent residence.
There are also journalist and specialist-talent categories.
If you are going to China to buy goods, you normally do not need to memorise the entire alphabet.
You need:
M.
Is there visa-free entry for Nigerian passport holders? #
Not under China's current ordinary 30-day visa-free policy.
Nigeria is not on the National Immigration Administration's current unilateral visa-free list.
Nigeria is also not among the 57 nationalities currently eligible for China's 240-hour visa-free transit scheme.
So you cannot fly to Guangzhou and say:
“I will use the 10-day transit visa-free policy.”
on a Nigerian ordinary passport.
But there is a 24-hour transit rule #
This is the part that needs separating from the 240-hour scheme.
China's National Immigration Administration says its 24-hour visa-free transit policy applies to nationals of all countries at open ports, provided they:
- are genuinely transiting to a third country or region
- hold the required travel documents
- have confirmed onward tickets
- remain within the restricted port area unless granted a temporary entry permit.
So a Nigerian making a qualifying short airside connection in mainland China can potentially use that direct-transit rule.
That is not the same thing as being allowed into Guangzhou for ten days without a visa.
Do not confuse:
24-hour direct transit
with:
240-hour visa-free entry.
What about Hainan? #
China has separate visa-free arrangements for Hainan.
Nigeria is not currently on the relevant nationality list for the expanded Hainan visa-free programme. The August 2026 NIA announcement raised the Hainan-eligible total to 61 countries, but Nigeria was not added.
So do not book a Nigeria–Hainan trip based on:
“Hainan is visa-free.”
The policy depends on nationality.
Hong Kong is a separate visa question #
This matters for Nigerians connecting through Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Immigration Department currently lists Nigeria as:
visa required.
And the Nigeria notation is particularly strict:
Nigerian nationals require a valid Hong Kong visa even when they are in direct transit by air and remain airside.
So do not assume:
“I am only changing planes, therefore I do not need a Hong Kong visa.”
For a Nigerian passport, check the Hong Kong route before buying the ticket.
Our flights from Nigeria to Guangzhou guide explains the safer routing options.
What does the visa cost? #
The Chinese Embassy's reduced visa-fee policy runs through:
31 December 2026.
For Nigerian citizens, the current consular visa fees are:
Single entry: ₦10,500
Double entry: ₦15,750
Multiple entry — six months: ₦21,000
Multiple entry — one year: ₦31,500.
Those charges are based on number of entries.
They are not cheaper simply because you choose L instead of M.
But ₦10,500 is not the whole application cost #
This is important.
The ₦10,500 figure is the Embassy visa fee for a Nigerian single-entry visa.
The China Visa Application Centre charges its own service fee separately.
Its current published Abuja notice lists a regular application service fee of:
₦74,500 including tax.
Optional services and express processing can add more.
So do not budget:
“China visa costs ₦10,500 total.”
That is only one part of the cost.
Always check the Visa Application Centre's current fee notice before paying.
So which visa should a Nigerian trader choose? #
If you are travelling to:
attend Canton Fair
meet Chinese suppliers
visit factories
inspect products
negotiate prices
or:
place orders,
apply for the:
M visa.
Prepare:
the correct invitation documents
six months of bank statements
paid flight booking
hotel booking
and:
a clear business itinerary.
Use our documents for China visa in Nigeria guide for the complete file.
When does the L visa make sense? #
When you are genuinely going for tourism and your trip meets the current Nigerian group-tour requirements.
That means working through the authorised tourism route.
Not:
“I am going to Guangzhou to buy clothes but my agent told me to call it holiday.”
Your visa application should describe your actual trip.
Do not let an agent choose the visa for convenience #
If an agent says:
“Tourist is easier.”
ask:
“Does China's current Nigeria guidance accept individual L applications?”
As of the current May 2026 update, it does not.
A legitimate agent should build your file around the correct category.
Not the category that is easiest for the agent to explain.
Use how to choose a China visa agent in Nigeria before paying anyone.
The short answer #
For most Nigerian buyers:
Buying goods → M visa
Canton Fair → M visa
Supplier meetings → M visa
Factory visits → M visa
Employment → Z visa
Study → X visa
Genuine organised tourism → L visa
For Nigerian ordinary-passport holders, individual L-tourist applications are currently not being accepted under the May 2026 Nigeria guidance, while the M visa has a published route for commercial and trade activity.
And do not build your travel plan around visa-free rumours:
Nigeria is not on the 240-hour visa-free transit list.
A qualifying 24-hour direct transit is a different rule.
And Hong Kong currently requires a visa from Nigerian nationals even for airside transit.
