China visa rejection reasons, and what to do next
A China visa rejection in Nigeria comes with no reason attached. What the official requirements actually demand, what applicants get wrong, and how to reapply.

Important: ChinaBridge is a private Nigerian company, not the Chinese Embassy, Visa Application Service Centre, or any government agency. We simply help you prepare and review your application. You submit it yourself and pay official fees directly to the Centre. No agent can approve or guarantee a visa.
A China visa refusal can be frustrating because the applicant may receive very little explanation about what went wrong.
That is where rumours start.
You will hear:
“Your account balance was too low.”
“You need ₦20 million.”
“Never apply from Lagos.”
“Once they reject you, wait exactly three months.”
We could not find any official Chinese Embassy, Consulate-General or Nigeria Visa Application Centre page that publishes a fixed list of refusal reasons for Nigerian applicants.
So do not diagnose a refusal from WhatsApp advice.
Go back to the requirements China actually publishes and audit your file against them.
Does China tell you why your visa was rejected? #
The current Nigerian visa guidelines do not promise applicants a written explanation for a refusal.
What they do say is that the consular officer may request additional documents and ultimately decides:
- whether a visa is issued
- visa validity
- permitted stay
- number of entries
based on the applicant's individual circumstances.
That means there is no official:
“Top 10 reasons China rejects Nigerians.”
If somebody gives you one, treat it as experience or opinion.
Not Embassy policy.
First understand the 2026 application process #
The process has changed from the old system many Nigerians remember.
Applicants now complete the online application and upload the relevant documents.
The Visa Application Centre says applicants should wait for the online review; once approved for the next stage, a Visa Application Certificate is sent to the verified email address for printing and passport submission.
That online acceptance should not be treated as a guarantee that a visa must ultimately be issued.
The visa decision remains with the Chinese consular authorities.
What does a Nigerian need for an M business visa? #
For Nigerian citizens travelling to China for commercial and trade activities, the correct category is normally the:
M visa.
The current Chinese Consulate-General guidance updated in May 2026 requires the basic documents:
- passport valid for at least six months
- blank visa pages
- online application form
- recent passport photograph.
Then come the business-trip documents.
The invitation is more than a normal company letter #
For an M visa, the current guidance requires the relevant invitation documentation.
For a first-time visitor to China, this includes:
Invitation Letter (TE) or Verification Letter of Invitation
plus:
an invitation letter from the Chinese inviting party.
Applicants who have previously visited China are exempt from the TE/Verification Letter requirement under the current guidance.
That distinction matters.
Do not use a generic PDF saying:
“We invite Mr John to visit our company.”
and assume it satisfies every first-time application.
What should the Chinese invitation contain? #
The Consulate lists specific information.
It should cover the applicant:
- full name
- gender
- date of birth
- passport number
It should explain the visit:
- purpose
- arrival and departure dates
- places to be visited
- itinerary
- relationship with the inviting company/person
- who will pay the expenses
And it should identify the inviter:
- company or person's full name
- contact number
- address
- company seal where applicable
- signature of the inviter or legal representative
The inviter must also state that the applicant will comply with Chinese laws and leave China according to schedule.
If your invitation is weak, fix the invitation.
Do not add unrelated documents hoping quantity will compensate for quality.
Use our China visa invitation letter guide.
Six months of bank statements are required #
For the M visa, the current Nigerian guidance asks for:
the applicant's or company's bank statement for the previous six months.
What it does not publish is a magic minimum balance.
There is no official rule on the page saying:
₦5 million
₦10 million
or:
₦20 million guarantees approval.
So be careful with agents selling a specific balance as though it were Embassy policy.
The useful question is whether the financial story of the application makes sense.
If the company is funding the trip, the company documents and bank statement should support that story.
If you are funding yourself, your own financial documents should make sense with the trip you describe.
Paid flights and hotel bookings are on the current list #
The current M-visa guidance asks for an itinerary including:
paid airline tickets
and:
hotel bookings.
That is stronger wording than many applicants expect.
It is therefore worth using bookings whose cancellation terms you understand.
Do not manufacture reservations.
And do not submit travel dates that contradict the invitation.
Consistency matters more than volume #
The Embassy does not publish:
“name mismatch = automatic refusal.”
But your application should tell one coherent story.
Check:
Passport name
against:
application form
against:
invitation
against:
hotel
against:
flight
against:
company documents.
Then check the dates.
If the invitation says:
15–20 October
but the hotel says:
31 October–5 November,
the file needs an explanation or correction.
Do not make the officer work out which document is true.
Your purpose should be specific #
For a business application, write a business purpose.
Not simply:
“Going to China for business.”
A much clearer file might show:
Attend Phase 1 of the 140th Canton Fair in Guangzhou, 15–19 October 2026, then visit ABC Manufacturing in Foshan on 20 October to discuss sourcing electrical products.
Now:
purpose + dates + location + invitation + bookings
can all support one another.
That is what you want.
Canton Fair applicants have a clear route in 2026 #
The Abuja Visa Application Centre published a specific notice for the 140th Canton Fair, accepting online Canton Fair visa applications from 7 September to 16 October 2026.
So if Canton Fair is genuinely why you are travelling, use the official fair route.
Do not invent a factory meeting simply because somebody told you:
“Fair invitation is weak.”
A genuine Fair trip should look like a Fair trip.
Our Canton Fair invitation guide covers that process.
Is a tourist visa easier? #
No.
Under the current May 2026 guidelines, Nigerian citizens travelling for tourism may contact authorised travel agencies to participate in group tours of more than five people.
The Consulate specifically says that it is temporarily not accepting individual tourist visa applications from Nigerian citizens.
For group tourism, an invitation from an authorised Chinese tourism organisation is required.
So if your real purpose is:
Canton Fair
supplier meetings
factory visits
or:
commercial sourcing,
do not switch to an L visa because somebody tells you:
“Tourist is easier.”
Your real purpose belongs under the appropriate visa category.
Read L visa or M visa for Nigerian travellers.
What should you check after a refusal? #
Since there is no published Nigerian refusal checklist, audit the parts the Consulate actually requires.
Start here.
Invitation #
Is it the right type for your situation?
If you are a first-time visitor, was the required TE/Verification Letter handled?
Does the company invitation contain all the required information?
Financial documents #
Did you provide the required six-month statement?
Does the name match the applicant or sponsoring company?
Does the funding story make sense?
Travel plan #
Are the flight and hotel bookings real?
Do the dates match the invitation?
Does the city match what you say you are doing?
Application form #
Are passport details exact?
Did you disclose previous China travel accurately?
Did you answer immigration-history questions truthfully?
Business purpose #
Can somebody reading only the file understand:
why you are going
where you are going
who you are meeting
and:
when you will return?
That is the audit.
Do not invent a problem that the Embassy never identified #
Suppose your first application had:
a valid invitation
but:
contradictory travel dates.
Changing the bank balance from ₦8 million to ₦12 million may do nothing.
Or suppose you are a first-time business visitor and the invitation documentation did not meet the current first-time requirement.
Buying a more expensive hotel will not fix that.
Improve the weak part of the actual file.
Not the part your WhatsApp group guessed.
Can you appeal a China visa refusal in Nigeria? #
We could not find a published administrative appeal procedure for an ordinary China visa refusal in the current Nigeria guidance.
The practical route is generally to prepare a new application when there is something meaningful to improve.
Do not write:
“Appeal attached.”
because a blog says that is the process.
If you believe the decision involved a procedural error or unusual circumstance, contact the Visa Application Centre or Chinese consular authority directly for current instructions.
How long must you wait before reapplying? #
We also could not find an official Nigerian rule saying:
wait 30 days
or:
wait three months.
So do not turn an internet rule of thumb into Embassy policy.
The better question is:
What will be different in the next application?
If the answer is:
nothing,
you are probably not ready to submit it again.
What should a stronger second application look like? #
Keep it simple.
Better invitation documentation #
Use the exact invitation route required for your applicant status.
For a genuine Canton Fair trip, use the official Fair invitation route.
For a supplier visit, use a real supplier relationship and correct Chinese invitation documents.
Six-month financial record #
Use the applicant or company account that genuinely supports the trip.
Do not move money around for one day to manufacture a balance.
Real travel bookings #
Use genuine bookings with sensible cancellation terms.
Clear itinerary #
One page is enough.
For example:
14 October — Arrive Guangzhou
15–19 October — Canton Fair Phase 1
20 October — Foshan supplier meeting
21 October — Depart
Now the file is easy to understand.
Exact consistency #
Same:
name
passport number
company
dates
purpose
across the application.
Do not submit fake supporting documents #
This should not need explaining, but visa anxiety makes people do reckless things.
Do not use:
- altered bank statements
- fake company invitations
- invented hotel bookings
- fake employment letters
- false previous-travel history
- altered CAC documents
The current application guidance gives consular officers the right to ask for additional supporting materials and puts the visa decision entirely within their assessment of the applicant's circumstances.
A genuine weak file can be improved.
A false file creates a much bigger credibility problem.
Nobody can guarantee your China visa #
A legitimate visa service can help you:
understand the checklist
fill the application
organise the documents
and:
spot inconsistencies.
It cannot promise:
“100% visa approval.”
The current official rules are explicit that the consular officer decides whether the visa is issued.
So when somebody says:
“Pay me, I have somebody inside,”
that is not a visa service.
Walk away.
Use our China visa agent in Nigeria guide before paying anyone.
A note for October 2026 travellers #
If you are travelling for the 140th Canton Fair, do not leave the application until the last few days.
Phase 1 begins:
15 October 2026.
Phase 2 begins:
23 October.
Phase 3 begins:
31 October.
Normal visa processing is currently stated as about four working days, with an expedited three-working-day option, subject to the consular decision.
That is processing time.
It is not permission to apply four days before your flight.
Allow time for:
online review + corrections + passport submission + processing + collection.
Your reapplication checklist #
Before submitting again:
VISA TYPE
✓ M visa genuinely matches the trip?
INVITATION
✓ Correct invitation route?
✓ TE/Verification Letter if required?
✓ Company seal/signature/details complete?
FINANCE
✓ Six months of genuine statements?
✓ Applicant/company funding story clear?
TRAVEL
✓ Paid flight booking?
✓ Hotel booking?
✓ Dates match?
PURPOSE
✓ Named fair, supplier or business activity?
✓ Simple itinerary?
FORM
✓ Passport number correct?
✓ Names identical throughout?
✓ Previous travel disclosed accurately?
DOCUMENTS
✓ Everything genuine?
If you cannot tick all of those, fix the file before paying again.
The short answer #
A China visa refusal in Nigeria does not come with an official public checklist telling you exactly what went wrong.
So do not guess.
For a Nigerian M business visa, work backwards from the current published requirements:
passport + application + correct invitation documentation + six-month bank statement + paid flights + hotel + coherent business itinerary.
If you are a first-time visitor, pay particular attention to the current TE/Invitation Verification requirement.
And do not switch to an L visa expecting an easier route: under the current 2026 Nigerian guidance, individual tourist applications are temporarily not accepted.
A stronger second application is not a thicker file.
It is a file where:
every document supports the same genuine trip.
For the full preparation process, use our China visa guide for Nigerian passport holders.
Then check which China visa you need.
And if you are travelling for October 2026, use the Canton Fair invitation guide before submitting.
Start here, it takes about two minutes
Tell us what you need. A person from the ChinaBridge desk will reply on WhatsApp, usually the same working day.
Buying, selling, shipping, a visa or the paperwork, it is the same desk. Nothing is payable to open a file, and nothing is due until you have agreed a plan in writing.
