China Train Luggage Rules: Guide for Nigerians

China train luggage rules become important when a buying trip includes several cities. You may arrive with one suitcase, then collect clothing samples, electronics and catalogues before your next train journey.

Check the packed bags before leaving the hotel or supplier. Weight, outside dimensions and contents all matter. A light carton can still be too large, while a small sample may contain something restricted.

This guide covers mainland domestic journeys. Check separate requirements for cross-border trains and any onward flight.

How much luggage can you take on a Chinese train? #

12306's luggage guidance lists a free carry-on allowance of 20 kg for an ordinary adult passenger. Each individual item must also weigh no more than 20 kg.

For high-speed EMU trains, each item's outside length, width and height must add up to no more than 130 cm. The published limit for conventional trains is 160 cm, with separate provisions for rod-shaped items.

The adult weight allowance applies to your combined belongings. Count your suitcase, backpack and sample bag together when planning.

Keep the China-trip packing checklist open while deciding what you need between cities. Leave room in your plan for purchases made after arrival.

How do you measure a suitcase or sample carton? #

Measure the finished package across its outside dimensions. Check the widest points, including protruding wheels, handles and any extra wrapping. Do not rely only on a suitcase's advertised inch size.

Consider these fictional measurements:

Bag A falls within the 130 cm dimensional ceiling. Bag B exceeds it by 13 cm. Those calculations do not establish whether either bag's contents or weight are acceptable.

Then weigh everything. A 14 kg suitcase, 5 kg backpack and 4 kg sample bag total 23 kg, which is 3 kg above the ordinary adult free allowance.

Sending the 4 kg samples separately would leave 19 kg. Check the remaining bags' dimensions and contents as well.

Repeat the check after packing purchases. A bag that fitted comfortably on the outward journey may have expanded on the return.

What about power banks, liquids and tools? #

The railway's prohibited-and-restricted-items catalogue distinguishes goods that cannot travel, goods requiring an approved checked arrangement and items allowed only within limits.

Examples relevant to buyers include:

These examples are not the complete list. Show unusual products and their labels to railway staff before travel; describe the actual contents, not simply “samples”.

If shopping at Shenzhen electronics markets, check battery-powered samples before agreeing to collect them personally. Keep readable product information available.

Can you carry market purchases and supplier samples? #

China train luggage rules still apply when you bought the goods for business. Calling something a sample does not remove its size, weight or safety restrictions.

Before visiting a supplier, agree which items you want to inspect and which you intend to carry away. Ask for their packed dimensions, weight, battery details and liquid contents where relevant.

For a visit to Yiwu market, plan a handover for purchases you cannot carry. Your travel day should not depend on finding transport for several unexpected cartons at the station.

You can send the supplier this message:

Please keep my proposed carry-away samples separate from the bulk order. Send photographs, packed dimensions, gross weight and details of any batteries, liquids or tools before collection. Hold the remaining goods for delivery to the warehouse address I confirm in writing.

Ask the receiving warehouse to confirm acceptance before dispatch. Keep carton counts, shipment references and domestic tracking details together.

What if your luggage is too heavy or too large? #

Arrange another suitable transport option before travelling. Do not build your plan around paying an excess fee at the gate: 12306's rules provide for stopping non-compliant items from entering the station and boarding.

Ask whether an appropriate checked-baggage service operates between the relevant stations and accepts your items. A reference to checked baggage in the rules does not guarantee that your chosen high-speed service offers it.

Alternatively, ask a suitable carrier about collection and delivery. Confirm acceptance of the contents, packing requirements, cost and delivery timing before handing over goods.

If goods are going to your export warehouse, follow the order-consolidation checklist. Photograph the packages and obtain a collection or delivery record.

Keep your passport, essential documents and items you need during the journey accessible. Avoid mixing them into a carton intended for separate delivery.

How should you prepare for the station? #

Save the complete departure-station name from your ticket, including its Chinese name. Confirm the entrance and allow time for identification checks, security and finding the boarding area.

Use the Guangzhou transport guide when planning how to reach the station. Account for the bags you can comfortably handle during transfers.

Before leaving, complete this check:

Use maps and navigation in China to check the route from the arrival station to your hotel or supplier. Send the pickup contact your train details and luggage count.

Once aboard, follow staff instructions for storage. Keep doors, aisles and shared spaces clear, and look after your belongings throughout the journey.

What questions do Nigerian buyers ask? #

Can I take two suitcases on the train? #

Check their combined weight, each item's dimensions, contents and suitable storage. Two bags do not create two separate adult free-weight allowances.

Is a 28-inch suitcase allowed on a high-speed train? #

Measure its actual outside dimensions. An advertised inch size does not establish that length, width and height add up to 130 cm or less.

Is the 20 kg allowance per bag or per person? #

For an ordinary adult, the free allowance is 20 kg in total. There is also a maximum weight of 20 kg for each individual carry-on item.

Does business class automatically allow more luggage? #

Do not assume a premium seat gives you an extra allowance for purchases. Confirm any applicable arrangement with the railway before buying the ticket or collecting goods.

Are children and folding strollers treated differently? #

12306 lists 10 kg for children. Its guidance excludes folding strollers used by accompanying infants from the stated allowance. Check assistance arrangements for your particular journey.

Can I use my airline's baggage allowance instead? #

No. Check each transport leg separately. Airline acceptance does not establish railway acceptance, and permission to carry goods within China does not establish Nigerian import clearance.

Does this guide cover trains to Hong Kong? #

Use the separate cross-border railway rules and station notices for that journey. Confirm the applicable luggage arrangements instead of extending mainland domestic guidance automatically.

Review China train luggage rules before each sourcing-city transfer. Agree what travels with you and arrange suitable delivery for the rest before leaving the supplier.
