China eSIM Not Working? Fixes for Nigerians
China eSIM not working? Follow this Nigerian traveller guide to check installation, data settings, validity, app access and support before buying another plan.

China eSIM Not Working? Fixes for Nigerians
A China eSIM not working can leave a Nigerian traveller unable to contact a supplier, open a route or send an update home. Start by identifying the actual problem before paying for another plan.
An eSIM that has not installed, a plan that has expired and an app that cannot log in need different solutions.
Use an available internet connection to open your provider's instructions, then check your phone and package step by step. Keep the Nigerian line used for important verification messages in mind while changing settings.
This guide was checked on 26 October 2026. Follow your exact device and package instructions where they differ from general advice.
Why is your China eSIM not working after installation? #
First separate installation from a working data connection.
Airalo's guidance distinguishes a downloaded profile from a plan that has connected and started a data session. Seeing the eSIM listed on your phone does not, by itself, prove that internet access is working.
Identify which situation applies:
- You cannot add the eSIM to the phone.
- The profile appears, but there is no supported network connection.
- The line connects, but mobile internet does not work.
- Internet works, but one particular app does not.
Check your location too. A destination-specific plan may not connect while you are still in Nigeria or transiting through another country.
Read its coverage and activation policy rather than treating every pre-departure connection failure as a fault.
Our China SIM-card guide for Nigerians explains the broader choice between an eSIM, local SIM and roaming.
Could your phone or carrier lock be the problem? #
Check the exact device model and regional version. The same familiar model name does not establish that every version supports the same SIM features.
Samsung explicitly warns that eSIM support can vary by country of origin. Use Samsung's eSIM support page and the provider's compatibility information for your actual handset.
On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung describes adding a plan through Settings, Connections and SIM manager. Menu wording can vary with the device and software.
For iPhone, Apple's international eSIM guide explains checking the carrier lock under Settings, General and About. “No SIM Restrictions” indicates an unlocked device in that check.
If you cannot find the expected option or receive a carrier-lock error, give support the exact model and error message.
Distinguish a worldwide provider's travel plan from a mainland Chinese carrier's domestic eSIM offer. Do not assume identical handset eligibility just because both are described as a China eSIM.
Have the plan's data or validity run out? #
Open the package details and check the remaining data, start time, expiry and covered destinations.
Airalo explains that validity can begin on connection to a supported network or, for some packages, at installation. Check the particular policy before deciding whether you activated too early.
Unused data does not necessarily keep a package alive after its validity ends.
Consider a fictional example: a seven-day plan starts at the beginning of a twelve-day buying trip. It leaves five days outside that original period, even if some data remains.
Check whether an eligible top-up or another package is needed. Confirm when any replacement allowance starts rather than assuming it extends the original expiry automatically.
Before purchasing again, establish whether the problem is exhausted data, expired validity or a connection setting. More allowance will not resolve every fault.
Which mobile-data settings should you check? #
Work through the connection instructions for your particular plan:
- Ensure the travel eSIM line is enabled.
- Select it as the mobile-data line.
- Apply its required data-roaming setting.
- Check the APN only if the provider requires a specific value.
- Use the supported network specified in the package instructions.
An APN is a mobile-data connection setting. Enter the provider's exact value if manual configuration is required; do not copy an unrelated plan's settings.
Airalo's connection guide also explains selecting the data line and disabling automatic cellular-data switching on iPhone. Read the current instructions for your handset and provider.
Keep the Nigerian SIM's data-roaming setting separate from the travel eSIM's. Turning roaming on for a travel plan is not an instruction to enable Nigerian roaming data too.
Check any automatic data-switching option so you know whether the phone can fall back to another line.
After making the instructed changes, refresh the connection or restart the phone as your provider advises. Briefly turn off Wi-Fi to test whether mobile data itself works, then restore Wi-Fi if needed.
What if internet works but WhatsApp or WeChat does not? #
First establish whether the failure affects everything or just one service.
If an ordinary webpage loads over mobile data but an app requests a verification code, investigate the account or verification requirement. A working data connection does not receive SMS addressed to a different phone number.
Nomad's guidance explains that a data-only plan does not provide ordinary calls or SMS. Check your actual package rather than assuming it includes a usable Chinese number.
Confirm international SMS arrangements for the Nigerian number connected to your accounts with your network. Check the bank or app's available verification methods too; keeping a line enabled is not a guarantee that every code will arrive.
App access can also depend on the service and network arrangement. Read our WhatsApp-in-China guide and ask your provider about the particular plan.
For WeChat registration or account preparation, use the WeChat setup guide. Buying another data plan will not automatically resolve an account-verification problem.
What should you send the eSIM provider's support team? #
Send a clear description through the provider's official support channel. Include your package, exact phone model, current city, error message and checks already completed.
You can adapt this message:
Hello. My [provider/package] eSIM is installed on [exact phone model], and I am currently in [city, country]. The issue is [no network/no internet/specific error]. The package shows [remaining data and validity]. I have checked the selected data line and followed the connection instructions. Please confirm the supported network, required settings and next step.
Provide screenshots of relevant settings privately if support requests them. Keep installation QR codes, passwords and verification codes out of public posts.
Ask before deleting the profile or attempting a transfer. Reinstallation rules differ, and a second purchase may create another profile without resolving the original issue.
For a business trip, keep essential information available offline: hotel address, supplier contacts, meeting details and transport instructions.
Prepare suitable translation tools and China navigation apps before you need them. Save important addresses separately as well.
Use our China-trip packing checklist to organise chargers, documents and phone preparation.
If you want ChinaBridge Global's help preparing communications for your buying trip, send your travel dates, cities, phone model and requirements. Agree the assistance and fees first; plan-specific faults should also go to the eSIM provider.
What else do Nigerian travellers ask about eSIM problems? #
Why is my China eSIM not working in Nigeria? #
Check the plan's coverage. A China-only package may require a supported network in China before it can connect. Installation in Nigeria and a working mobile-data session are separate checks.
Does “No Number” mean the eSIM is broken? #
Not necessarily. A data-only plan may have no usable telephone number. Nomad documents this behaviour. Check whether the package provides data successfully and what services it includes.
Can a data-only eSIM receive my Nigerian bank OTP? #
It does not receive ordinary SMS sent to your Nigerian number. Confirm the arrangements for that Nigerian line and the bank's verification methods before relying on them abroad.
Should I delete and reinstall the eSIM? #
Ask the provider first. Current setup flows and reinstallation rules vary. Keep your order details available and follow the instructions for your particular account and profile.
Can I use the eSIM to hotspot my laptop? #
Check the package and device rules. Confirm tethering eligibility, any allowance or speed conditions and the settings required. A phone data plan does not establish every hotspot feature automatically.
Will buying more data fix the connection? #
Only if the issue is an exhausted allowance and the new purchase applies correctly. It will not necessarily fix an unsupported handset, carrier lock, wrong settings or an app-account problem.
Should I buy a local SIM as a backup? #
Compare the immediate need with your phone's available SIM capacity, local-number requirements and provider support options. Confirm compatibility and included services before purchasing another connection.

Tell us what you need. A person from the ChinaBridge desk will reply on WhatsApp, usually the same working day.
Buying, selling, shipping, a visa or the paperwork, it is the same desk. Nothing is payable to open a file, and nothing is due until you have agreed a plan in writing.
