Does WhatsApp work in China? Internet for Nigerian travellers

Does WhatsApp work in China? Not on Chinese networks. What is blocked, what still works, the roaming and eSIM routes that keep WhatsApp alive, and the VPN question.

No — WhatsApp does not normally work on mainland China's local internet.

If you connect your phone to hotel Wi-Fi, Canton Fair Wi-Fi or ordinary mobile data from a Chinese SIM, WhatsApp may not connect. Google, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and X are also among services blocked or restricted on mainland Chinese networks.

For a Nigerian trader, this matters immediately.

Your suppliers may be on WeChat, but your staff, customers, family and Nigerian bank notifications are still back home.

The easiest setup is:

travel eSIM for unrestricted data + Nigerian SIM kept active for OTPs + WeChat for China.

Set that up before you fly.

The easiest way to keep WhatsApp working in China #

For most Nigerian travellers, use a China travel eSIM that explicitly says it uses international data routing.

Do not assume every eSIM does this.

Some travel eSIMs route internet traffic outside mainland China, which means WhatsApp, Gmail and Google can continue working without connecting through ordinary Chinese internet filtering.

Airalo, for example, states that its China plans use international routing and currently allow access to WhatsApp and Google without an additional VPN.

That is why we recommend checking the provider's wording before buying.

Look for:

“international routing,” “unrestricted internet,” or explicit support for WhatsApp/Google in mainland China.

If the provider does not say it, do not assume.

Our China SIM card guide for Nigerians explains the full eSIM setup.

Your Nigerian SIM can also keep WhatsApp working #

International roaming can also work differently from ordinary Chinese mobile data because the connection may be routed through your home or roaming provider's international network.

That means a Nigerian roaming SIM can be useful for:

WhatsApp, bank OTPs, emergency internet and calls home.

But roaming data can be expensive.

So the better setup is normally:

Nigerian SIM: ON

Nigerian SIM data: OFF

Travel eSIM: mobile data ON

Your Nigerian number stays alive for SMS and banking while the eSIM handles everyday internet.

Do not leave automatic mobile-data switching enabled. Your phone can quietly fall back to expensive roaming data without asking you.

What about a Chinese SIM? #

A Chinese SIM is useful.

It gives you:

But it does not solve the WhatsApp problem.

A normal China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom SIM uses mainland China's local internet environment.

China officially allows foreign visitors to buy local SIM cards with a passport.

Use the Chinese SIM for China.

Use the internationally routed eSIM for the rest of your life.

For a two-week buying trip, you may not even need a Chinese SIM unless an app, hotel, delivery service or business contact specifically needs a +86 number.

Does Canton Fair Wi-Fi work with WhatsApp? #

The Canton Fair provides free Wi-Fi inside the exhibition complex.

The official instructions say buyers connect to:

Cantonfair

or

Cantonfair-a

and log in using their Canton Fair badge number, with the last six digits of the badge number used as the password.

That is useful for basic internet access.

But it is still internet inside mainland China.

So do not depend on Canton Fair Wi-Fi for WhatsApp, Gmail or Google.

Your travel eSIM is much more important than free exhibition Wi-Fi.

At a busy fair, it also saves you from spending ten minutes trying to fix Wi-Fi while the supplier you wanted to meet is standing in front of you.

Hotel Wi-Fi has the same problem #

A beautiful international hotel does not give you international internet simply because the receptionist speaks English.

Hotel Wi-Fi still operates inside China's network controls.

So you can connect perfectly and still discover:

WhatsApp does not load.

Gmail does not open.

Google search does nothing.

Meanwhile WeChat works immediately.

Nothing is wrong with the hotel's router.

That is simply the network environment.

If your eSIM has international routing, switch Wi-Fi off and use mobile data when you need your Nigerian apps.

What works normally in China? #

You are not going offline.

China has an enormous digital ecosystem.

For a business traveller, the important services are:

WeChat — suppliers, messages, calls and payments

Alipay — payments and local services

Amap/Gaode Maps — navigation

Didi — taxis and ride-hailing

Trip.com — hotels, trains and flights

Those services work on ordinary Chinese internet.

China has also been actively improving digital services for foreign visitors, including telecommunications, payments and multilingual support.

The mistake is arriving with only Western apps and expecting China to adapt to your phone.

Prepare your phone for China instead.

WeChat matters more than WhatsApp when dealing with suppliers #

Keep WhatsApp working for Nigeria.

But move your China business communication to WeChat.

A supplier you meet at Canton Fair will usually be much easier to reach there.

Use WeChat to receive:

quotations,

product photos,

factory videos,

catalogues,

packing information,

shipping marks,

and production updates.

Set the account up before leaving Nigeria.

Our WeChat setup guide shows exactly what to do.

Do not wait until somebody at Canton Fair says:

“Scan my WeChat.”

and then discover you cannot register.

What about Google Maps? #

Even if your eSIM makes Google services accessible, Google Maps should not be your main navigation tool in mainland China.

Use Amap/Gaode or another China-friendly mapping option instead.

The problem is not only whether the app opens. Chinese mapping and location data operate differently, so local mapping apps are usually much more useful for:

metro stations,

factory addresses,

markets,

restaurants,

hotel entrances,

and Didi pickup points.

Read our maps and navigation in China guide before travelling.

What about VPNs? #

VPN advice about China is often written too casually.

China regulates VPN and cross-border telecommunications services. Current UK government travel guidance specifically warns that online services including VPNs need to comply with Chinese licensing requirements.

For a Nigerian traveller, there is little reason to make an unlicensed VPN your entire internet strategy when internationally routed roaming and travel eSIM services are available.

A company may provide employees with an approved corporate connection.

That is different from downloading a random free VPN because somebody on TikTok recommended it.

For an ordinary buying trip:

use an internationally routed eSIM as your primary connection.

If you already have a lawful corporate connectivity arrangement, treat that as backup.

Do not depend on free VPN apps #

Even apart from the regulatory issue, this is bad business-trip planning.

You may be standing in a Guangzhou market trying to:

approve a Nigerian bank transaction,

open an urgent Gmail attachment,

send a quotation to your office,

or speak to a customer on WhatsApp.

That is not when you want to discover your free VPN stopped connecting.

Connectivity on a China buying trip is business infrastructure.

Spend the small amount required to make it reliable.

Android users should prepare before Nigeria #

This deserves attention.

If your business depends heavily on Google services, update important apps before leaving Nigeria.

Make sure these are installed and working:

Also save important documents offline.

That includes:

hotel address in Chinese

supplier addresses

flight details

passport/visa copies

Canton Fair registration

important phone numbers

A functioning eSIM makes life easier.

Offline copies mean one technical problem cannot strand you.

How should your family and office contact you? #

Do not disappear into China and then send everybody a new communication plan from Guangzhou Airport.

Tell them before you leave.

For example:

WhatsApp: normal communication through your travel eSIM

WeChat: backup communication

Phone/SMS: Nigerian SIM remains active

Your staff should also know that if WhatsApp does not deliver immediately, they can reach you another way.

For business owners, this is more important than whether Instagram works.

The setup that works for a Nigerian trader #

For a normal one- or two-week trip to Guangzhou:

Before Nigeria

Install and verify WeChat.

Install Alipay.

Buy and install an internationally routed China eSIM.

Keep your Nigerian SIM active.

Update your banking apps.

Download maps and important documents.

When you land

Turn on the travel eSIM.

Set it as the mobile-data line.

Keep the Nigerian SIM active for SMS.

Switch Nigerian-SIM data off.

Test WhatsApp.

Test your banking app.

Then continue with the trip.

That takes five minutes.

The short answer #

Does WhatsApp work in China?

Not normally through mainland Chinese Wi-Fi or a standard local Chinese SIM.

But keeping it working is easy if you prepare before travelling.

For most Nigerian business travellers, the cleanest setup is:

internationally routed travel eSIM for data

Nigerian SIM for OTPs

WeChat for Chinese suppliers

Do not make hotel Wi-Fi your internet plan.

Do not make a random VPN your business plan.

And do not arrive in Guangzhou without WeChat because WhatsApp is what you normally use in Lagos.

China works differently.

Once your phone is set up for that difference, the problem largely disappears.

Next, set up WeChat in Nigeria before you travel.

Then choose your China SIM or eSIM.

And before leaving the airport, use our Guangzhou arrival guide.
