Water Pumps from China to Nigeria: Buying Guide
Buy water pumps from China to Nigeria: match flow and head, check borehole and solar models, test samples, verify suppliers and calculate landed costs.

Water Pumps from China to Nigeria: A Practical Buying Guide
Buying water pumps from China to Nigeria starts with matching the pump to the job. Specify the required water flow, total head, water conditions and power supply before comparing horsepower or supplier prices.
A retailer supplying plumbers in Lagos needs a tested range with available spare parts. A borehole installer in Port Harcourt needs a model that fits the well and delivers the required water at the actual operating conditions. A farm buyer may need a different pump and power arrangement entirely.
This guide brings those buying decisions together, including supplier checks, sample testing, import documents, shipping and landed cost.
Which water pump suits your Nigerian customer? #
Start with the application and the water being handled.
| Intended use | Pump category to investigate | Important buying checks |
|---|---|---|
| Borehole water supply | Borehole submersible pump | Well clearance, pumping water level, required flow and head |
| Tank filling or water transfer | Suitable surface or submersible transfer pump | Source position, pipe layout, priming and water conditions |
| Building water pressure | Booster pump or packaged booster set | Required pressure, peak demand, controls and available inlet supply |
| Drainage or wastewater | Appropriate drainage or sewage pump | Solids handling, liquid compatibility and installation conditions |
| Farm water transfer | Suitable electric or engine-driven pump | Water source, pipe run, irrigation demand and service support |
| Solar water supply | Matched solar pumping system | Daily water volume, head, controller and solar-array design |
“Submersible” does not automatically mean suitable for sewage, sand or every borehole. Obtain the model's permitted liquid conditions.
For drinking-water applications, ask for applicable material and product documentation. A pump moves water; it does not establish that the water is safe to drink.
For resale, choose a limited range you can explain and support. For an installation, buy against measured site requirements.
Why is horsepower alone a poor way to choose a pump? #
Horsepower describes a power rating. It does not tell you the water flow available at your required head.
Grundfos explains in its pump-curve guidance that pump selection depends on the relationship between flow, head and the system's operating point.
Ask the supplier for the exact model's performance curve at the quoted frequency and speed. Have the proposed flow and head marked on that curve.
Keep these terms separate:
- Flow: the volume delivered per unit of time, such as litres per minute or cubic metres per hour.
- Head: the energy expressed as an equivalent height of liquid that the pump must provide.
- Maximum head and maximum flow: separate limits that should not be treated as one simultaneous operating promise.
A catalogue showing “maximum head 80m” and “maximum flow 100L/min” does not establish that the pump delivers 100L/min at 80m.
Compare the performance at your required operating point, together with the manufacturer's permitted operating range.
How do you work out the flow and head you need? #
Record the actual water requirement first.
For an invented example, suppose a buyer wants to fill an empty 5,000-litre tank in two hours, with no water being used during filling.
Required average flow = 5,000 litres ÷ 2 hours = 2,500 litres per hour.
That is 2.5 cubic metres per hour, or approximately 41.7 litres per minute.
For a borehole, obtain the pumping water level at the intended extraction rate. Grundfos's groundwater-sizing guidance distinguishes this dynamic level from the other head and pressure requirements.
Consider this simplified example for discharge into an open tank:
| Head component | Illustrative value |
|---|---|
| Pumping water level below ground | 30m |
| Tank discharge height above ground | 10m |
| Assumed pipe and fitting losses at the target flow | 8m |
| Total required head | 48m |
The supplier must therefore demonstrate approximately 2.5 cubic metres per hour at 48m head, subject to the installer's verified design.
The 8m loss allowance is invented. Actual losses depend on pipe diameter, length, fittings and flow. A pressurised outlet adds another requirement.
The drilled depth and pump setting depth matter for installation, but neither alone gives the required head. Obtain the borehole test information, seasonal water-level allowance and sustainable yield before selecting the model.
What should you check about electrical and solar compatibility? #
Have the installer confirm the available voltage, phase, frequency and power source.
Request the motor nameplate, rated current, starting requirements, wiring diagram, supplied controller and protection requirements. Clarify whether the quoted kW refers to electrical input or motor output.
For a borehole pump, specify the required cable length and connection arrangement. A short factory cable tail does not cover an entire borehole installation.
Ask a qualified installer to select the cable, protective devices, earthing and control arrangement.
For solar models, obtain a complete matched-system proposal. Grundfos's solar-pump sizing guidance considers location, daily water volume, head and the relevant seasonal conditions.
Check:
- Pump and controller compatibility.
- Required panel arrangement and permitted electrical limits.
- Expected daily water production at the site.
- Dry-run, low-water and full-tank controls.
- Included cables, sensors and mounting items.
- Whether batteries or another power source are part of the design.
Our solar-panel guide helps with the panel specifications. For a separate backup-power installation, use our solar-inverter buying guide and have the pumping load assessed.
Do not assume that a general household inverter or any similarly rated controller will operate the pump correctly.
Which specifications belong in the supplier quotation? #
Give every supplier the same buying brief.
| Item | Detail to request |
|---|---|
| Application | Borehole, transfer, booster, drainage or another defined use |
| Performance | Required flow at required total head, with the model-specific curve |
| Water | Temperature, sand or solids conditions and permitted liquid characteristics |
| Physical fit | Pump dimensions, outlet connection and installation clearances |
| Materials | Specified housing, impeller, shaft and seal materials |
| Motor | Voltage, phase, frequency, power rating and current |
| Controls | Included control box, sensors, protections and operating functions |
| Cable | Supplied length, specification and connection requirements |
| Package | Exact pump, motor, accessories and exclusions |
| Support | Test evidence, spare parts and written warranty remedy |
For a borehole model, compare the actual outside dimensions with the available casing clearance. A nominal “four-inch” description is not a complete fit check.
For a surface pump, have the installer assess the suction arrangement and the manufacturer's limits. A longer hose or a larger motor does not resolve an unsuitable suction installation.
Ask the supplier to price every required accessory so the cheaper offer can be compared fairly.

Supplier enquiry to copy
Hello. Please quote water pumps for [application] in Nigeria, quantity [number].
Required duty: [flow] at [total head]. Water conditions: [details]. Power supply: [voltage, phase and frequency]. Installation dimensions: [details].
Please provide the exact model, performance curve, motor nameplate, materials, included controls, cable length, accessories, sample price, MOQ and production time.
Also provide test options, spare-parts prices, warranty remedy, carton dimensions, gross weight and your China delivery point. Any component substitution requires our written approval.
How should you test a pump sample before a bulk order? #
Order the exact pump, motor and controller combination intended for production. Our samples guide helps organise delivery and approval.
Arrange a supervised wet test in the manufacturer's permitted setup. A motor spinning on a bench does not establish pumping performance.
Ask the qualified test provider to record:
- The model, serial number, nameplate and supplied accessories.
- Test water conditions and electrical supply.
- Measured flow and head at the agreed operating point.
- Electrical input and current under the test conditions.
- Starting, controls and protection operation.
- Leakage, vibration, noise and other observed defects.
- Test duration, instruments, results and acceptance decision.
Agree any additional electrical, material or endurance testing separately. Avoid treating a short demonstration as proof of long-term reliability.
Keep the approved sample's identification, specification and test record. Arrange quality inspection in China against a written production checklist.
State whether the inspection includes hydraulic testing and which units or samples will be tested. Carton counting and photographs are a different scope.
What import requirements should you confirm for Nigeria? #
Confirm the route for the exact products before paying the bulk-order deposit.
SON describes SONCAP as a pre-shipment conformity-assessment process for regulated imports. Follow its current filing instructions and National Single Window migration notice.
Use our SONCAP requirements guide to prepare questions for the relevant assessment provider.
Confirm:
- The pump, motor, controller and accessory descriptions.
- Proposed Customs classifications.
- Applicable standards and required test evidence.
- The certification or permit route for the actual importer and intended use.
- Required commercial and shipping documents.
- Applicable duties, taxes and other clearance charges.
Our product-certificate guide helps distinguish the approval questions.
A reseller importing finished pumps should not assume that an industrial-machinery concession available under specific conditions automatically applies to its stock. Obtain confirmation for the actual transaction.
Have the clearing professional assess separate solar panels, engines, controls or spare parts where included.
How should you pack and ship water pumps? #
Request packed dimensions and gross weight for each model before accepting a freight quotation.
Protect the product against movement and impact, with appropriate support for long pump bodies, exposed connections and control boxes. Agree the packing with the supplier and forwarder.
Ask whether units arrive individually boxed, crated or palletised. Identify any fuel, oil, batteries or other contents requiring the carrier's instructions.
For an invented example, one carton containing one pump measures 60 × 30 × 35cm:
Carton volume = 0.60 × 0.30 × 0.35 = 0.063 CBM.
Twenty-five identical cartons occupy 1.575 CBM, excluding additional pallets or outer packing. At an assumed 18kg per carton, the total gross weight is 450kg.
Use our cost-per-CBM guide to prepare the quotation questions. Confirm the weight or volume billing basis, minimum charges and packing allowance.
Ask what the quote covers in China and Nigeria, including receiving, freight, clearance, destination handling and delivery. Establish the endpoint: a collection warehouse and delivery to your customer's premises are different scopes.
How do you calculate the landed cost and selling margin? #
For water pumps from China to Nigeria, calculate the cost of a complete, saleable package.
The following is an invented planning example for 25 identical pumps. It is not a current supplier, freight, Customs or ChinaBridge quotation.
| Cost item | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Goods | ₦2,500,000 |
| China delivery and handling | ₦150,000 |
| International freight | ₦350,000 |
| Applicable certification, import charges and clearance allowance | ₦450,000 |
| Inspection and testing allocation | ₦100,000 |
| Nigerian delivery | ₦100,000 |
| Warranty reserve | ₦100,000 |
| Total planning amount | ₦3,750,000 |
| Amount per unit if all 25 are saleable | ₦150,000 |
Replace each allowance with an itemised quotation or assessment. Check insurance, payment fees, exchange-rate costs and everything excluded from the offer. Site installation, pipework and electrical work are excluded from this example.
At an illustrative selling price of ₦200,000, the difference is ₦50,000 per pump, or 25% of sales, before other business expenses.
If only 24 units are saleable, allocating the same planning amount across them gives ₦156,250 per unit. Returns and unsaleable stock affect the calculation.
Use our landed-cost guide to build the calculation for your actual order.
What should you agree about payment, spare parts and warranty? #
Have the proforma invoice identify the exact pump, motor, controller, quantity, specification and delivery scope.
Use our supplier-deposit guide to plan payment-stage questions.
Record the approved sample, performance requirements, testing arrangements, packing and remedies in a written purchase order. Require approval before changing components.
Request a model-specific spare-parts list, with prices and availability for relevant seals, impellers, bearings, capacitors, sensors or controllers. Identify which repairs can be handled locally and which require a replacement assembly.
Clarify warranty coverage, exclusions, claim evidence, the remedy and responsibility for testing and transport. Agree who handles installation and commissioning records.

What else do Nigerian buyers ask before importing water pumps? #
How much does a water pump cost in China? #
Obtain a quotation for the exact pump, motor, controls and accessories. Compare the delivered cost at the same performance requirement rather than comparing horsepower labels alone.
Which horsepower pump do I need for my borehole? #
Provide the required flow, pumping water level, delivery height, pipe losses and power supply. Have the installer and supplier select a model from its performance curve.
Does maximum head mean the pump delivers maximum flow there? #
No. Check the model's curve. Maximum head and maximum flow are separate limits; the required flow must be verified at the required head.
Will any four-inch pump fit a four-inch borehole? #
Check actual pump dimensions, casing dimensions, straightness and required installation clearance. Nominal sizes alone are insufficient.
Can a solar water pump work without batteries? #
Some systems pump during available sunlight into a storage tank. Confirm the complete system design, daily water requirement and reserve arrangement with the designer.
Is every submersible pump suitable for dirty water? #
No. Match the pump to the actual liquid, sand, solids and temperature conditions. Borehole, drainage and sewage designs can have different permitted uses.
Should I order spare parts with the first shipment? #
Price the relevant parts and agree a support plan. Choose spares against the exact models, service needs and warranty arrangements rather than buying a mixed assortment.
