Repacking Goods in China: Nigeria Shipping Guide
Repacking goods in China can reduce freight costs. Check carton sizes, chargeable weight, protection, warehouse fees and what to approve before shipping.

Repacking Goods in China: Nigeria Shipping Guide
Before approving repacking goods in China, ask for the current carton measurements, a proposed packing change and the complete cost comparison. A smaller carton is useful only when it still protects the goods and improves the overall shipping arrangement.
For Nigerian importers, repacking can affect freight charges, retail presentation, receiving records and damage claims. Agree what can change before the warehouse opens or discards packaging.
This guide was checked on 26 October 2026.
1. When should a Nigerian importer request repacking? #
Ask for a packing review when the supplier's cartons contain avoidable empty space, several small deliveries need a better arrangement, or the outer packaging is unsuitable for the onward journey.
Repacking may involve changing the outer carton, rearranging items, adding protection or replacing damaged packaging. The right change depends on the products and booked transport service.
For example, a Nigerian buyer receiving simple fabric pouches may have different packing priorities from someone buying glass lighting or electronic equipment.
Do not authorise the same instruction for every product.
Consolidation and repacking also mean different things. Consolidation brings orders together for a shipment; repacking changes how goods are packed. Combined orders can remain in separate protective cartons.
Our order-consolidation guide explains how to organise deliveries from several suppliers.
Before deciding, ask which goods have arrived, what has been checked and which cartons the warehouse proposes to alter.
2. What packaging should you keep or strengthen? #
Start with the product's protection and intended sale, rather than assuming every supplier box is unnecessary.
DHL's packing guidance recommends matching packaging to the contents. It warns that underfilled boxes can collapse and overfilled ones can burst.
Consider retaining or strengthening:
- Protective inserts that hold the product securely.
- Separation between items that could damage each other.
- Suitable outer cartons for the packed weight.
- Retail packaging needed for your selling arrangement.
- Manuals, accessories and product identification.
- Packaging required by the carrier or applicable cargo rules.
For computers and similar fragile electronics, FedEx describes protective layers and double-boxing. Removing an outer box is therefore not automatically an improvement.
If you may need to return an item or make a warranty claim, check the relevant packaging and documentation conditions before anything is discarded.
Ask the packer to explain the proposed protection. A photograph of a neatly closed carton does not show how the goods are secured inside.
3. How can smaller cartons change chargeable weight? #
First obtain the billing rule for your actual service.
DHL Express Nigeria describes comparing actual and volumetric weight, using a divisor of 5,000 for centimetres and kilograms. Other booked services may use different rules.
Illustration only: assume that the service uses 5,000 and bills the higher weight for one carton, before rounding or minimum charges.
Before repacking:
- Outside dimensions: 60 × 40 × 40 cm.
- Gross weight: 12 kg.
- Volumetric weight: 60 × 40 × 40 ÷ 5,000 = 19.2 kg.
- Weight basis before rounding: 19.2 kg.
After an agreed packing change:
- Outside dimensions: 50 × 40 × 30 cm.
- Gross weight: 11 kg.
- Volumetric weight: 50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5,000 = 12 kg.
- Weight basis before rounding: 12 kg.
That is a reduction of 7.2 chargeable kilograms under the example's assumptions. It is not a guarantee that your goods fit safely into that smaller carton.
Our volumetric-weight guide explains divisors, multiple cartons and billing rules.
The example's volume falls from 0.096 CBM to 0.060 CBM, a difference of 0.036 CBM. For sea groupage, check the actual quotation and minimums through our cost-per-CBM guide.
4. Will repacking actually reduce your total cost? #
Compare the complete options for repacking goods in China, using the same transport service and Nigerian destination.
Request the freight calculation before and after the proposed change. Then add any receiving, opening, counting, materials, labour, storage or extra handling charges.
The basic comparison is:
Net benefit = freight saving minus repacking and additional handling costs.
Also consider the value of the packaging being removed and the consequences if the new arrangement does not protect the goods adequately.
In the example above, carton volume falls by 37.5%. The final freight invoice does not automatically fall by that percentage: billing minimums, rounding and other charges can change the result.
If the shipment remains below a minimum billable amount, ask whether the smaller package changes the payable total at all.
Confirm what a “free repacking” offer includes. Extra cartons, protective materials or special handling may have separate charges.
Use our landed-cost guide to record the full result, including delivery to your shop in Lagos, Ibadan, Aba, Kano or another destination.
5. What should you approve before the warehouse starts? #
Give the warehouse a clear scope rather than a general instruction to make everything smaller.
Agree:
- Which orders and cartons can be opened.
- What checks should happen before repacking.
- What packaging and accessories must be retained.
- The proposed protective materials and carton arrangement.
- The charges and any storage implications.
- What evidence you need before dispatch.
- Who authorises the final shipment.
Opening cartons is not the same as testing the products. If you need counting, sample comparison or function checks, include them explicitly.
Our quality inspection guide explains how to define a more detailed inspection.
Instruction you can send:
“Please send the current carton count, outside dimensions, gross weights and your packing proposal before removing retail packaging. Confirm what will be retained, what will change and the complete repacking charge.”
“After repacking, send photographs, the final carton contents, outside dimensions, gross weights and revised freight quotation. Please hold the shipment for my dispatch approval.”
Ask the warehouse to acknowledge the instruction and resolve any unclear points before work begins.
6. What records and labels must survive the packing change? #
Keep the connection between the supplier's delivery and the final outgoing cartons.
If eight incoming cartons become five outgoing cartons, request a record showing which products and quantities entered each final carton.
Retain the supplier order references, domestic tracking numbers, receiving evidence and any discrepancy reports. Photograph damage or shortages before the original packaging is discarded.
Update the final packing record with the carton numbers, contents, quantities, gross weights and outside dimensions.
Your warehouse customer code and shipping marks must remain clear. Use our shipping marks guide to agree the identifying information with the provider.
Customer marks and regulated cargo markings perform different jobs. Changing the box does not remove any applicable packing, marking or documentation requirements.
IATA's battery-shipping guidance explains why classification, packing, marking and documentation matter for battery shipments. Obtain the carrier's applicable instructions before changing such packaging.
Declare batteries, liquids and other special contents accurately. Ask the provider to confirm cargo acceptance and packing requirements; do not use repacking to conceal what is being shipped.
7. What do Nigerian buyers commonly ask about repacking? #
Is repacking the same as consolidation? #
No. Orders can share one shipment while remaining in their existing cartons. Ask separately whether any boxes will be opened, replaced or combined.
Should I remove every retail box? #
Check protection, resale presentation and any return or warranty conditions first. Retain packaging that serves a necessary purpose.
Can soft goods always be vacuum-packed? #
Ask whether compression suits the exact material, shape and selling arrangement. Agree the method and check the result before applying it to a whole order.
Will a 37.5% volume reduction cut freight by 37.5%? #
Not necessarily. The chargeable-weight method, minimums, rounding, extra packing charges and other fees determine the actual saving.
Can I remove battery markings when changing cartons? #
Do not remove required markings without an approved replacement arrangement. Follow the carrier's instructions for the final package and any overpack.
What should I ask when repacking is advertised as free? #
Confirm the included labour, cartons, protective materials, opening checks and handling. Compare the final freight quotation rather than assuming the word “free” settles the total.
Should the warehouse inspect everything it repacks? #
Agree the scope. Sealed-carton receiving, counting, photographs and product testing are different tasks. Specify which ones you require and who approves release.
