Power Banks on China Flights: Guide for Nigerians
Check rules for power banks on China flights: hand luggage, CCC marks, watt-hours, quantity limits and airline approval before you travel from Nigeria.

Power Banks on China Flights: Guide for Nigerians
Rules for power banks on China flights involve more than the capacity printed on a shopping listing. Nigerian travellers need to check the battery rating, quantity, markings, packing and the operating airline's policy for each flight.
A unit accepted on one part of a journey should not be assumed acceptable for every connection.
This guide was checked on 26 October 2026. It covers ordinary passenger power banks, including the additional CCC requirement for domestic flights within mainland China.
Check your actual device and itinerary before departure, especially if you will fly between Chinese cities after arriving from Nigeria.
What are the rules for power banks on China flights? #
Start with these checks:
- Carry power banks in cabin baggage, not checked baggage.
- Check the watt-hour rating and quantity limit.
- Confirm any airline approval required for the device.
- Check CCC markings and recall status for mainland domestic flights.
- Follow the operating airline's storage and onboard-use rules.
ICAO's March 2026 update limits each person to no more than two power banks and prohibits recharging power banks aboard the aircraft.
It also recommends against using them to charge other devices. An airline may make that a prohibition: China Eastern's published rules prohibit both recharging a power bank and using it to power another device onboard.
Check the carrier's current instructions rather than relying on an old travel video or another passenger's experience.
How do you check the watt-hour rating? #
Read the manufacturer's label for the rated energy in watt-hours, written as Wh. If the rating is unclear, send a clear label photograph to the airline before travelling.
China Eastern's current policy allows ordinary power banks up to 100 Wh, permits those above 100 Wh up to 160 Wh only with airline approval, and prohibits larger ones. Confirm your own operating airline's limit; approval is not automatic.
For understanding the energy calculation:
Wh = mAh × rated battery voltage ÷ 1,000.
Two illustrative calculations are:
- 20,000 mAh at a stated 3.7 V equals 74 Wh.
- 30,000 mAh at a stated 3.7 V equals 111 Wh.
Use the actual rated battery voltage. Do not assume every device is rated at 3.7 V or substitute a USB output voltage without checking the manufacturer's information.
The examples explain the arithmetic; they do not establish that a particular product is accepted. A lower energy rating also does not override the quantity, marking or condition requirements.
When do you need CCC or 3C marking in China? #
CAAC's notice, effective from 28 June 2025, prohibits power banks without CCC markings, with unclear markings, or from recalled models or batches on domestic flights within mainland China.
The notice is specifically about those domestic flights. Check your international airline separately rather than treating this as one identical rule for every flight worldwide.
For a Nigerian buyer, the important scenario is arriving in Guangzhou and later taking an internal flight. Check that second flight before packing the power bank you normally use at home.
A familiar brand name does not establish that the exact model and batch meet the requirement. Check the actual unit, its markings and any relevant manufacturer recall information.
The CCC mark is also not a substitute for checking watt-hours or obtaining airline approval where required.
Use our Guangzhou airport arrival guide to plan arrival and onward arrangements alongside these checks.
Where should you put the power bank during the flight? #
Keep it in the cabin and protect it against damage and short circuits. IATA recommends original packaging or appropriate protection for exposed terminals, with a protective case or pouch.
If your cabin bag is taken at the gate to be placed in the hold, remove the power bank before handing the bag over.
Follow the carrier's cabin-storage instructions too. China Eastern specifically prohibits placing power banks in overhead bins and directs passengers to designated locations such as appropriate under-seat baggage or a seat-back pocket.
Do not assume every carrier uses identical storage instructions. Follow the operating airline and cabin crew.
IATA advises against travelling with swollen or damaged batteries. If a device becomes hot or starts smoking, tell the crew or airport staff immediately and follow their instructions.
Keep these battery checks with your broader China-trip packing checklist.
How should you check a Nigeria-to-China itinerary? #
List every flight, including the return and any internal China journey. Identify the operating carrier for each leg, particularly when a ticket involves different airlines.
Review our Nigeria-to-Guangzhou flight guide when planning the wider journey, then confirm battery requirements directly with the relevant airlines.
Ask before departure if the capacity, marking or approval requirement is uncertain. Include photographs of the label rather than only the product's advertising name.
You can adapt this message:
Hello. I am travelling on [route and date], operated by [airline]. I intend to carry [quantity] power bank(s), model [model], rated [Wh]. Please confirm whether they are permitted, whether prior approval is required, and the packing, storage and onboard-use rules. My itinerary also includes [other flights]. Label photographs are attached.
Save the reply and any approval reference with your travel documents. Reconfirm if the device, route or operating carrier changes.
Plan your local movements using our Guangzhou transport guide, and check the requirements of any additional transport operator.
What should Nigerian business travellers prepare before departure? #
Complete the checks while you still have time to ask questions or choose a suitable alternative.
- Read the label on each power bank.
- Count the units you intend to carry.
- Check the airline's capacity and approval rules.
- Check CCC and relevant recalls for mainland domestic flights.
- Pack the unit appropriately in cabin baggage.
- Save any airline approval and current instructions.
Charge your phone before leaving for the airport and keep essential hotel, supplier and transport details available offline. Do not build your journey around being allowed to use a power bank during the flight.
Prepare connectivity too. Our China SIM-card guide for Nigerians explains the options to assess before arrival.
If you are buying power banks as business stock, discuss a compliant freight arrangement before placing the order. Passenger allowances do not establish acceptance of a commercial shipment. Our battery-shipping guide introduces the separate freight questions to ask.
For ChinaBridge Global assistance with your buying-trip preparations, send your travel dates, cities and requirements. Agree the service scope and fees first; battery-carriage approval must come from the relevant airline.
What else do Nigerian travellers ask about power banks? #
Can I carry power banks on China flights if bought in Nigeria? #
Where you bought the unit is not enough to decide. Check its rated energy, condition, quantity and the applicable marking requirements, including CCC for mainland domestic flights, with the operating airline.
Can I carry three small power banks instead of two large ones? #
ICAO's March 2026 update sets a maximum of two power banks per person regardless of their energy capacity. Small units do not create an exception to that quantity limit.
Is a 30,000 mAh power bank automatically allowed? #
No. Check its stated watt-hours and rated voltage, then the actual airline policy. The illustrative 3.7 V calculation above gives 111 Wh, which falls above the 100 Wh category.
Can I put one in my checked suitcase? #
Power banks belong in cabin baggage. Check before handing over any bag, including a cabin bag that staff decide to place in the hold at the gate.
Does a clear CCC mark guarantee acceptance? #
No. It does not remove other requirements, and CAAC's domestic-flight notice also covers recalled models or batches. Check the complete set of conditions for your flight.
Can I charge my phone from the power bank onboard? #
Check the airline's rule. ICAO recommends against this use, while China Eastern expressly prohibits it. Recharging the power bank itself onboard is prohibited by the March 2026 ICAO update.
Can I bring stock for customers under the same allowance? #
Do not treat personal-use passenger provisions as a commercial-freight approval. Confirm an appropriate shipment arrangement and its documentation with a provider that accepts the actual goods.
