Flights from Nigeria to Guangzhou: the routes and the stopovers

Flights from Nigeria to Guangzhou all stop once, in Addis, Nairobi, Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. Which airlines fly it, the transit rules, and when fares peak.

A departures board or an aircraft at Murtala Muhammed International Airport at night, or a Nigerian traveller at a boarding gate with a small carry on and a fol

There is currently no nonstop passenger flight from Nigeria to Guangzhou that we can confirm on sale.

If you are flying from Lagos or Abuja, plan on at least one stop — usually Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha, Dubai or Istanbul.

If you are travelling from Port Harcourt for the October 2026 Canton Fair, you normally need to position to Lagos or Abuja first. That changes from 1 December 2026, when Ethiopian Airlines says it will begin Port Harcourt–Addis Ababa flights four times a week, opening a much cleaner Port Harcourt–Addis–Guangzhou route.

For a Nigerian buyer, the cheapest ticket is not always the best ticket.

What matters is:

total journey time, baggage allowance, transit rules, connection risk and how easy it will be to return with samples.

Here is how the routes work in September 2026.

Are there direct flights from Nigeria to Guangzhou? #

Not one we can currently verify.

Air Peace previously operated Lagos–Guangzhou, which is why older articles and travel agents still mention a direct Nigerian flight to China.

But as of 22 September 2026, Guangzhou is not listed among Air Peace's current international destinations. Its published international network currently lists Jeddah, Johannesburg, London and Mumbai.

So if somebody tells you:

“Air Peace flies direct to Guangzhou.”

check Air Peace's booking system before building your China trip around it.

Old route information survives online long after the aircraft stops flying.

For now, think:

Nigeria → transit hub → Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN).

Which airlines fly from Lagos to Guangzhou? #

The main routes Nigerian buyers should compare are these.

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa #

This is one of the most straightforward Africa-based routes.

Ethiopian currently sells Lagos–Guangzhou and Abuja–Guangzhou itineraries through its network.

The route is:

Lagos → Addis Ababa → Guangzhou

or:

Abuja → Addis Ababa → Guangzhou

For many Nigerian traders, Ethiopian is worth checking first because Addis is geographically sensible for an Africa-to-Asia journey and Ethiopian has a substantial China network.

Another practical advantage is baggage.

Ethiopian's published economy allowance is generally two checked pieces of up to 23 kg each, although the airline itself says allowances can vary by route and ticket.

That matters when you are returning from Guangzhou with samples.

Kenya Airways via Nairobi #

Kenya Airways currently sells Lagos-to-Guangzhou itineraries.

At the time we checked on 22 September 2026, Kenya Airways was advertising Lagos–Guangzhou return economy fares from roughly ₦1.04 million for selected September/October dates. That is a live fare snapshot, not a permanent price.

The route is:

Lagos → Nairobi → Guangzhou

This is another route worth comparing when Ethiopian fares rise.

Do not compare only ticket price.

Compare the actual connection time.

An extra ₦150,000 can sometimes save you eight hours sitting in an airport.

Qatar Airways via Doha #

Qatar Airways also connects Guangzhou and Lagos through Doha.

Qatar's own route information confirms that Guangzhou–Lagos journeys stop in Doha rather than operating nonstop.

The Nigerian route works in reverse:

Lagos → Doha → Guangzhou

Doha is a major transit hub, and this route can be attractive when the fare, baggage and connection line up well.

Emirates via Dubai #

Emirates is currently selling:

Lagos → Dubai → Guangzhou

Its published Lagos-to-Guangzhou schedule shows total journey times around 21 hours on current routings.

Emirates also currently operates Lagos–Dubai service and publishes Guangzhou as one of the Chinese destinations available from Lagos.

Dubai is a good example of why you should understand the difference between a connection and entering the transit country.

We explain that below.

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul #

Turkish Airlines currently sells Lagos–Guangzhou itineraries.

At the time of checking, it was displaying return economy fares from about US$895 for selected September and October 2026 dates. Again, that is a dated fare example, not a quote for your trip.

The route is:

Lagos → Istanbul → Guangzhou

Istanbul is much farther north than Addis or Nairobi, so the total journey can be longer.

But if the fare is significantly cheaper or the dates fit better, it can still make sense.

What about flights from Abuja to Guangzhou? #

Abuja travellers do not necessarily need to fly to Lagos first.

Ethiopian currently publishes Abuja–Guangzhou bookings through its network. For the 2026 autumn Canton Fair dates, Ethiopian was displaying an Abuja–Guangzhou return fare around ₦3.32 million when checked in September.

That fare illustrates something important:

Canton Fair travel can become expensive quickly.

If you are based in Abuja, compare:

Abuja → Addis → Guangzhou

against:

Abuja → Lagos + separate international ticket

But be careful with separate tickets.

If the Abuja–Lagos flight is delayed and you miss a separately booked Lagos–China flight, the international airline may have no obligation to rebook you for free.

A through ticket is usually easier to protect than two unrelated bookings.

What about Port Harcourt to Guangzhou? #

This is changing.

As of September 2026, Ethiopian does not yet operate its newly announced Port Harcourt–Addis Ababa passenger route.

The airline says the service will begin on 1 December 2026, operating four times weekly on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Once that starts, Port Harcourt traders should be able to look at:

Port Harcourt → Addis Ababa → Guangzhou

without first positioning domestically to Lagos.

That is useful for 2027 China trips.

But it does not solve travel to the October–November 2026 Canton Fair because the new service begins after the fair.

For the October fair, a Port Harcourt traveller should currently plan around getting to Lagos or Abuja first.

Air Peace currently sells Port Harcourt–Lagos and Port Harcourt–Abuja domestic services.

If you are buying separate tickets, give yourself a serious buffer.

Do not book:

Port Harcourt arrives Lagos 2:00pm

and

China flight departs Lagos 4:00pm

because one domestic delay can destroy an international ticket.

If possible, travel into Lagos earlier.

For an expensive China trip, sleeping one night in Lagos can be cheaper than missing the international flight.

Which route is fastest? #

There is no permanent winner because schedules change.

But do not judge a flight by the number of stops alone.

All of these can be one-stop journeys from Lagos:

Addis

Nairobi

Doha

Dubai

Istanbul

Yet total travel time can vary significantly depending on the connection.

A 3-hour layover may be comfortable.

A 12-hour layover may make the cheaper ticket feel very expensive by the time you arrive in Guangzhou exhausted.

When comparing flights, look at:

departure time from Nigeria

arrival time in Guangzhou

length of transit

whether the bags are checked through

whether both flights are on the same ticket

Those five things tell you more than the airline name.

Do Nigerians need a transit visa in Dubai? #

This is where people mix up two different situations.

If you are connecting airside and not entering the UAE, that is different from obtaining a visa to enter Dubai.

The UAE government's current guidance says a pre-arranged transit visa is needed for travellers who are not visa-exempt or eligible for visa on arrival when they intend to leave the airport and enter the UAE during transit.

So a normal same-ticket Emirates connection where:

is not the same thing as planning a Dubai stopover.

Problems become more likely when you buy separate tickets and need to collect your bags, pass immigration and check in again.

Before paying for a complicated itinerary, ask the airline:

“Can I make this connection on a Nigerian passport without entering the UAE?”

Get the answer for your exact booking.

Do Nigerians need a visa to transit Hong Kong? #

This is one claim that is often stated incorrectly.

A Nigerian passport does require a visa to enter Hong Kong, but Hong Kong Immigration specifically provides an exception for direct air transit where the passenger does not leave the airport transit area.

That means:

Airside flight connection: potentially possible without entering Hong Kong.

Land in Hong Kong and take the train into mainland China: you have to enter Hong Kong, so you need the appropriate Hong Kong entry permission.

That difference matters.

Some Nigerian traders see a cheap Lagos–Hong Kong ticket and think:

“I will just land there and take the train to Guangzhou.”

Do not assume your mainland China visa covers Hong Kong.

It does not.

Hong Kong operates a separate immigration system.

If Guangzhou is your actual destination and you do not already have Hong Kong permission, flying into Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is usually simpler.

What about Addis, Nairobi, Doha and Istanbul? #

For ordinary through-ticket international connections where your baggage is tagged to Guangzhou and you remain airside, these hubs are routinely used for connecting travel.

But transit rules can change by nationality, ticket arrangement and whether you need to enter the country.

The safe question is not:

“Does Ethiopia/Qatar/Turkey require a visa?”

It is:

“On this exact ticket, with a Nigerian passport, will I remain airside and will my baggage be checked through to Guangzhou?”

Ask the airline before paying.

Especially if:

A cheap self-transfer can become useless if immigration rules stop you from collecting the bag needed for the next flight.

Canton Fair 2026: book around your phase #

The 140th Canton Fair runs in Guangzhou in three phases:

Phase 1: 15–19 October 2026
Phase 2: 23–27 October 2026
Phase 3: 31 October–4 November 2026.

Do not fly to Guangzhou simply because somebody told you:

“Canton Fair is in October.”

Go for the phase that contains your products.

Phase 1 covers areas including electronics, electrical products, machinery, vehicles, auto parts, hardware, tools and new energy.

Phase 2 includes furniture, building materials, household goods, gifts, ceramics and sanitary products.

Phase 3 includes fashion, textiles, shoes, bags, toys, personal-care products, food and related consumer categories.

Arriving for the wrong phase can mean spending thousands of dollars to walk through halls containing products you do not sell.

Our Canton Fair phases guide breaks that down product by product.

Why Canton Fair flights cost more #

Demand concentrates around the same dates.

Thousands of buyers want to arrive in Guangzhou just before each phase begins.

You can see this in current airline pricing.

For example, Ethiopian was showing around ₦2.42 million for one Lagos–Guangzhou October itinerary when checked recently, while its fare covering the full 15 October–4 November Canton Fair period was showing around ₦3.39 million.

Meanwhile, Kenya Airways was displaying selected late-September/early-October Lagos–Guangzhou returns around ₦1.04 million at the time of our check.

That does not mean Kenya will cost ₦1.04 million when you read this.

It demonstrates why we do not publish a permanent:

“Nigeria to Guangzhou flight costs ₦X.”

Airfares move with:

Search your actual dates.

Visa before flight — but you may still need a booking #

Do not confuse having a flight booking for a visa application with taking the risk of an expensive non-refundable ticket.

For the 140th Canton Fair, the China Visa Application Centre in Lagos currently asks applicants to provide the Canton Fair invitation, flight and hotel bookings, CAC document/company introduction and bank statements, among other application materials.

The Visa Centre also warns that passports with less than six months' validity can create refusal or entry risk.

So the practical approach is:

prepare a genuine itinerary, but choose a ticket that is refundable or changeable where possible until the visa is issued.

Do not invent a fake reservation.

And do not lock yourself into the cheapest completely non-refundable fare simply because you need flight details for the application.

Our China visa documents guide covers the full file.

Baggage matters more to a trader than a tourist #

A tourist may travel with clothes.

A Nigerian buyer returns with:

That is why baggage should be compared before ticket price.

Ethiopian, for example, currently publishes an economy allowance of generally two pieces of 23 kg, although exact allowances depend on route and fare.

Another airline may sell you a cheaper ticket with less useful baggage.

If you save ₦100,000 on the ticket and spend ₦250,000 on excess baggage coming home, you did not buy the cheaper flight.

Before paying, screenshot or save:

checked baggage allowance

cabin baggage allowance

extra-bag price

overweight-bag price

Then decide.

For larger samples, shipping can make more sense than taking them as excess baggage. See our guide to getting samples from China to Nigeria.

Book one ticket where possible #

Suppose you buy:

Lagos → Doha

from one company,

then separately buy:

Doha → Guangzhou

because combining them saves ₦80,000.

If the first flight is delayed and you miss the second, you may simply be a no-show on the second ticket.

If both flights are part of one protected itinerary, the airline normally has much more responsibility for getting you to the final destination after a disrupted connection.

For first-time China travellers, a clean through-ticket is usually worth paying a little more for.

Especially when the trip already includes visa costs, hotels, fair registration, supplier meetings and thousands of kilometres of travel.

When should you arrive for Canton Fair? #

Do not schedule yourself to land at 7am on the first day of the phase and walk straight into Pazhou.

Give yourself time.

For a first trip, arriving one or two days before your phase gives you room for:

immigration,

baggage,

hotel check-in,

SIM/eSIM setup,

WeChat and payment problems,

jet lag,

and learning how to reach the exhibition centre.

Guangzhou is straightforward once you understand it.

It feels much less straightforward after 20 hours in the air.

Our arriving at Guangzhou airport guide takes you from immigration to the city.

Before you pay for a Nigeria–Guangzhou flight #

Check these six things:

1. Your China visa route

Know what documents the Visa Centre currently requires.

2. Your Canton Fair phase

Do not buy first and check the product halls later.

3. The entire itinerary

Look at total travel time, not only departure time.

4. Transit requirements

Especially if the journey uses separate tickets or requires collecting luggage.

5. Baggage

Your return journey is where a trader's luggage grows.

6. Change and refund rules

A slightly more expensive flexible ticket can be worth much more if your visa, factory meeting or fair plan changes.

The short version #

As of September 2026, plan on one stop between Lagos or Abuja and Guangzhou.

The main routes worth checking are:

Ethiopian via Addis Ababa

Kenya Airways via Nairobi

Qatar Airways via Doha

Emirates via Dubai

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul

Air Peace currently does not list Guangzhou among its active international destinations, so do not rely on old information about its former direct China service.

From Port Harcourt, the picture improves on 1 December 2026, when Ethiopian says it will start four weekly Port Harcourt–Addis flights.

For the October 2026 Canton Fair, however, Port Harcourt buyers should still plan around positioning to another Nigerian gateway.

And when you compare tickets, do not ask only:

“Which airline is cheapest?”

Ask:

How long is the journey?

Can I transit with my Nigerian passport?

Are my bags checked through?

How much baggage do I get?

Can I change the ticket?

Those questions are what separate a cheap fare from a good China trip.

If you are travelling for the fair, continue with our first-time Canton Fair guide.

For the visa, start with how to apply for a China visa in Nigeria.

And once you land, use our Guangzhou airport arrival guide before heading into the city.
