How to Find Your Postal Code in Nigeria for Orders
To find your postal code in Nigeria, start with the actual receiving location and NIPOST's official guidance. Avoid choosing a code simply because it appears beside your city in an online list.
This matters when ordering from China, receiving a parcel at your shop or sending imported goods to a customer in another state.
NIPOST's October 2026 guidance also describes a new digital postcode for individual buildings. That makes it important to check both the destination and the format a delivery service accepts.
This guide was checked on 26 October 2026. It explains the lookup process, address details and questions to ask when a checkout rejects your code.
What is a postal code, and is +234 one? #
A postcode is a location reference used with an address. It is not the recipient's telephone number or the carrier's shipment reference.
Nigeria's international telephone country code is +234. Put it in the appropriate phone-number field when that format is requested; it is not a Nigerian postal code.
There is also no single location code that correctly identifies every delivery destination across Nigeria.
Before searching, decide where the goods should actually go: your home, shop, office, an agreed warehouse or someone else's receiving address.
If you are preparing your first import order, our mini-importation guide for Nigerians explains the wider buying and delivery arrangements.
How do you find your postal code in Nigeria? #
Use the official NIPOST postcode finder. NIPOST links to this service from its own website.
The public finder offers location, map-link and postcode lookup options. Choose the method that identifies the intended destination, especially if you are ordering for someone elsewhere.
NIPOST's published building-lookup guidance recommends these steps:
- Open the official postcode service.
- Use the appropriate location method.
- Identify the correct building on the map.
- Check the selected building against the real address.
- Copy or save the postcode associated with that location.
If using your phone's current location, make sure you are at the intended receiving place. Being in the same neighbourhood is not the same as selecting the correct building.
For an order going to another person, ask them to confirm the destination. A map link should point to that receiving location rather than a nearby landmark.
Keep the full code with the written address so you can recheck it before paying or booking delivery.
How does the new digital postcode differ from six digits? #
NIPOST describes the conventional six-digit postcode as identifying a broad postal area. Its newer digital system uses an 11-character combination of letters and numbers associated with a particular building or addressable location.
These are different formats and levels of detail. Do not assume a building-level code can be converted into six digits by removing its letters or keeping only part of it.
If a service requests a conventional six-digit code, ask NIPOST or that delivery provider to confirm the correct area code for the full receiving address. Do not shorten the digital building code as a substitute.
NIPOST's guidance says the digital postcode works alongside ordinary address information. Your street, area and city remain useful.
A published national addressing system also does not prove that every foreign marketplace has integrated the new format. Check the requirements of the actual checkout and delivery provider.
Keep postal information separate from shipping marks on imported cartons. A postcode identifies a destination; a warehouse customer mark helps staff identify whose goods they have received.
What should a complete delivery address contain? #
Prepare a consistent receiving record before entering the checkout form:
- Recipient's full name.
- House, plot, flat or shop number, as applicable.
- Street, estate or community.
- Area, locality and city.
- State and country.
- Verified postcode information in the accepted format.
- Reachable phone number.
- Necessary access or collection instructions.
Use the fields the platform provides. Keep a clear written version too, rather than relying entirely on a location pin.
For example, a trader in Ibadan ordering goods for a Lagos shop should use the Lagos shop's receiving details. The trader's current phone location does not establish the delivery destination.
An instruction such as “use the side entrance” can help a rider enter the premises, but it should accompany the main address.
Confirm whether the booked service delivers to that address or ends at a collection point. Our shipping-company selection guide explains the service-scope questions to ask.
What if an online checkout rejects your postcode? #
First check that the country, state and city match the intended Nigerian destination. A form configured for another country may expect a different address pattern.
Read the field's instructions and the error message. Note whether it accepts letters, numbers, spaces or a particular length, without assuming those rules establish the correct postal information.
If a verified code is rejected, ask the platform or carrier which format it currently supports for that destination.
You can send this message:
Hello. I am entering a delivery address in [city and state], Nigeria. The postcode field rejects the verified code for this location and shows [error message]. Please confirm the postcode format your checkout and delivery service require, and how I should enter the correct address.
Do not invent a code or change the receiving city just to pass validation. A successful form submission is not proof that the parcel has a correct delivery address.
Before paying, confirm that the accepted information still identifies the intended destination. Keep the response with your order record if support provides specific instructions.
How can Nigerian importers and sellers avoid address mistakes? #
Confirm the destination for each separate stage of an import.
If a supplier is delivering to a Chinese warehouse, use that warehouse's current receiving details. Your Nigerian postcode belongs to the onward receiving arrangement, not automatically to the supplier's first delivery. Our China-warehouse address guide explains what to confirm.
For a customer delivery within Nigeria, ask the recipient to approve the written address before dispatch. Keep home, office and warehouse records clearly named so the wrong saved address is not selected.
You can use this confirmation:
Please confirm your full receiving name, phone number, house or shop number, street, area, city, state and postcode. Also confirm any access instructions and whether you will be available for delivery or collection.
If you sell imported goods online, include this check in your order process. Our online-selling guide covers the wider customer and delivery arrangements.
An accurate address helps the receiving stage, while production, transport and clearance still affect arrival. Use the China-to-Nigeria shipping timeline guide when planning an order.
For ChinaBridge Global assistance with an import, send the product details, quantity, shipping route and intended Nigerian destination. Agree the delivery scope and fees before booking.
What else should you know before using a postcode? #
Is +234 the postal code in Nigeria? #
No. It is Nigeria's international telephone country code. Postal information identifies a location and belongs in the appropriate address field, separate from the recipient's telephone number.
Does Lagos or Abuja use only one postcode? #
Do not choose a code solely from the city name. Verify the relevant area or building, depending on the system and format required by the delivery service.
Is a ZIP-code field asking for something different? #
Some forms use “ZIP” or “postal code” as the field label. Select Nigeria as the destination, read the field requirements and confirm any rejected format with the platform or carrier.
Can several people share the same digital postcode? #
NIPOST says the digital postcode belongs to the building or location. Several people receiving goods at that same building can share its location reference; it is not a personal identity number.
What if my building does not appear? #
Check the search and location carefully, then follow NIPOST's approved request process for a missing building. If existing details are wrong, use its correction process. Do not assign yourself a neighbouring building's digital code.
Do I still need my street address? #
Yes. NIPOST's guidance presents the postcode alongside the written address. Include the recipient and contact details, plus useful access instructions, as required by the delivery arrangement.
Can I track a parcel with a postcode alone? #
A postcode identifies a destination. Ask the seller or carrier for the shipment's tracking reference and the system that accepts it. Keep the order number, transport reference and address information separately identified.
