How to Track Goods from China to Nigeria in 2026

To track goods from China to Nigeria, first identify who currently holds the shipment and which reference works in that company's system.

A supplier's order number, a Chinese courier number and an international shipping reference may describe different stages of the same purchase.

Typing the wrong one into a tracking website can produce no result even when goods are moving. A “delivered” message can also refer to a Chinese warehouse rather than your Nigerian address.

This guide was checked on 26 October 2026. Use it to build a clear record of each handover and ask useful questions when updates stop.

What do you need to track goods from China to Nigeria? #

Ask the supplier or forwarder for more than a screenshot saying “shipped”.

Keep these details together:

Save the reference as text so you can copy it accurately. Ask which official website or customer portal accepts it.

For a consolidated shipment, record which supplier's cartons belong to which forwarding reference. Do not assume every item ordered on the same day travelled together.

Update your record when another company takes over. The useful question is: “Who has my goods now, and what evidence confirms that?”

Which number works for each stage of the journey? #

For delivery within China, request the domestic courier's name and transport reference. After delivery, ask the receiving warehouse to match that reference to your account and carton count.

Your warehouse customer code or shipping mark helps identify goods. Do not assume it will work on an airline or shipping-line website.

For international air cargo, ask whether you have an airline reference or a forwarder's house reference, and which tracker accepts it. Our air-waybill guide explains the distinction.

For sea freight, ask the forwarder which bill-of-lading, booking, container or house reference you should use. Read the bill-of-lading guide before treating these as interchangeable.

For final delivery in Nigeria, confirm the local operator and any new reference. Request the collection location if the service ends at a warehouse.

A reference is useful only when you know the company, service and stage it identifies.

How do you use the carrier's official tracking system? #

Open the relevant carrier's website yourself, enter the reference and read the event details, location and timestamp.

For DHL shipments, start with DHL Nigeria tracking. DHL Express uses a 10-digit waybill number; other DHL services can use different formats.

For a shipment handled by Maersk, use Maersk tracking with the appropriate reference and service. Ask your forwarder for instructions if you have its own house reference.

If NIPOST is handling the postal delivery, use its official Track & Trace page. Do not assume every parcel arriving in Nigeria passes through NIPOST.

A tool such as 17TRACK can help interpret supported carrier data. If automatic carrier detection fails, confirm the carrier with the sender before selecting it manually.

An aggregator's result does not replace a direct investigation with the company responsible for the goods.

What do common tracking messages actually mean? #

Read the complete event rather than relying on a large status label.

“Information received” or “pre-advised” can mean shipment data was submitted before physical handover. 17TRACK's guidance distinguishes pre-advice from the carrier actually receiving the parcel.

“In transit” does not, by itself, establish that your goods have left China. Check the latest movement and location recorded beneath it.

“Arrived” needs a location. Arrival at a transfer hub, Nigerian port or forwarder's warehouse represents a different milestone.

“Customs hold” requires a specific explanation. Ask the responsible courier or clearing provider what document, inspection, payment or other action is outstanding and who must handle it.

“Delivered” needs a destination and receiving record. Check the recipient, address, time and number of packages acknowledged.

For example, if a Chinese courier delivered to your forwarding warehouse, ask the warehouse to confirm receipt and allocation to your customer reference. That event does not establish delivery to Nigeria.

Before travelling to collect goods, get explicit confirmation of availability, release requirements, outstanding charges and collection instructions.

What if tracking is missing, wrong or unchanged? #

Start by checking the number, carrier and service. Copying an order number into a courier tracker is different from entering the transport reference it requires.

Ask the sender whether the shipment has been physically handed over or only booked. Request the latest acceptance or movement record if available.

DHL says tracking events commonly appear within 24–48 hours, but that guidance should not be applied to every carrier or shipping arrangement.

17TRACK identifies several possible reasons for “Not Found”, including an incorrect number or carrier and data that has not yet been updated. The message alone is not proof of loss.

For containers, Maersk explains that updates occur at key journey milestones and their frequency varies. Treat the latest recorded event as a milestone rather than assuming continuous location updates.

Compare progress with the written estimate for your actual shipment. Our China-to-Nigeria shipping timeline guide separates transport from the wider delivery process.

If the displayed destination, date or recipient conflicts with your order, send the discrepancy to the responsible provider and request verification.

When should you escalate a delay or missing carton? #

Follow up when an agreed milestone is missed, a handover cannot be confirmed or the receiving count differs from your records. Ask for a named person to investigate and a date for the next response.

Consider a fictional example: your packing list shows eight cartons, but the warehouse confirms six. You need the location and receiving evidence for the remaining two cartons, not only a general “delivered” screenshot.

Use this message:

Hello. Please investigate shipment [reference]. We expected [carton count] cartons, but the latest confirmed receipt shows [received count]. Please confirm each carton's location, the last physical handover, any remaining action and the next update date. Please also provide the relevant receiving or delivery record.

Keep the invoice, packing list, accepted quotation, tracking history, messages and receiving photos together. Record any shortage or visible damage at handover and notify the responsible parties promptly.

If insurance was arranged, check the policy's notice requirements and contact the insurer or broker. Our cargo-insurance guide explains what to clarify; a tracking delay alone does not establish an insured loss.

Before your next booking, compare the update process and complaint arrangements using our shipping-company selection guide.

What else do Nigerian buyers ask about shipment tracking? #

Can my 1688 order number track the entire journey? #

Do not assume so. Ask for the transport reference for each relevant stage. Your marketplace order number may help the supplier identify the purchase without working in an international carrier's tracker.

Does “delivered in China” mean the forwarder has received everything? #

Confirm with the warehouse. Ask it to identify your goods, reconcile the carton count and report any discrepancy. A courier delivery event alone does not establish that every expected carton has been allocated correctly.

Can 17TRACK track every shipment? #

Coverage and available data depend on the carrier and service. Confirm the actual operator and use its tracking or support channel when an aggregator cannot identify or retrieve the shipment.

How do I follow up on goods held by Customs? #

Contact the courier, forwarder or clearing provider responsible for that shipment. Request the exact issue, supporting reference, required action and responsible person. Verify any payment request through the provider's official channel.

Does a moving container prove all my cartons are inside? #

A container update does not independently verify your order's contents. Ask the forwarder for records connecting your cartons and forwarding reference to that particular shipment.

Does arrival in Lagos mean I can collect immediately? #

Ask for collection readiness. Clearance, carrier or terminal release, warehouse processing and payment requirements may still need attention. Confirm the actual collection address and required documents before travelling.

How long should I wait before reporting a problem? #

Use the agreed milestones and applicable complaint deadlines. Report a wrong destination, unexplained shortage or missed commitment promptly. Do not wait for a universal number of days that may not apply to your shipment.
