How to start mini importation in Nigeria: what it really takes
How to start mini importation in Nigeria: what people import, how it flies in, the $300 duty free rule, what NAFDAC and CAC require, the sums.

Mini Importation in Nigeria: How to Start, What to Import & China Shipping Costs
Mini importation in Nigeria means buying relatively small quantities of products from China or another country, shipping them to Nigeria—often by air—and reselling them for a profit.
You do not need a container to start.
You do not need millions of naira either.
But you do need to understand one number before buying anything:
Your landed cost per product.
A ₦2,000 item on 1688 is not a ₦2,000 product in Nigeria after Chinese delivery, agent fees, air freight, Customs charges and local delivery are added.
That is where many beginners lose money.
This guide explains how to start mini importation from China to Nigeria in 2026, what products make sense, how the $300 Customs rule works, what NAFDAC regulates and how to calculate whether an item is actually worth importing.
What is mini importation? #
Mini importation is simply importing on a smaller scale.
Instead of buying:
1 container of 10,000 pieces
you might buy:
20, 50 or 100 pieces
and send them to Nigeria through air cargo, courier or consolidated freight.
Most mini importers sell through:
- TikTok
- Jumia
- Konga
- Their own website
- Physical shops
- Resellers
The business model is straightforward:
Find product → calculate landed cost → import small quantity → sell → reorder winners
The difficult part is choosing the right product.
How much money do you need to start mini importation in Nigeria? #
There is no honest fixed amount.
You may be able to test one lightweight product with relatively little money.
Another product may require several hundred thousand naira before the numbers make sense.
Your starting capital depends on:
- Product price
- Minimum order quantity
- Product weight
- Carton size
- China delivery
- Agent charges
- Air freight
- Customs treatment
- Nigerian delivery
- Marketing budget
Do not start with:
“I have ₦100,000. What can I import?”
Start with:
“What can I sell, and what will it cost me landed in Nigeria?”
Then decide whether you have enough capital.
Best products for mini importation in Nigeria #
Products that work well for small-scale air importation usually have four characteristics.
They are:
Small
Light
Easy to sell
Worth significantly more in Nigeria than their landed cost
Examples can include:
- Phone accessories
- Hair accessories
- Fashion accessories
- Costume jewellery
- Small beauty tools
- Small kitchen tools
- Home organisers
- Small household gadgets
- Stationery
- Car accessories
- Small electronic accessories
- Craft products
- Packaging accessories
That does not mean every product in these categories will make money.
You still need to calculate the freight per unit.
Products beginners should be careful with #
Some products are difficult for mini importation even when the Chinese purchase price looks cheap.
Heavy products #
If one item weighs 3kg, air freight can destroy the margin.
Very bulky products #
Air cargo may charge using volumetric weight rather than only actual weight.
A lightweight product inside a huge box can therefore still be expensive to ship.
Fragile products #
Glass, ceramics and delicate electronics can produce losses through breakage.
Products already dominated by Nigerian wholesalers #
If major importers bring the product into Nigeria by container, their sea-freight cost per unit may be far below your air-freight cost.
Do not assume China is cheaper.
Compare against the actual Nigerian wholesale price.
Regulated products #
Products regulated by NAFDAC, SON, NCC or another Nigerian authority can require approvals that make a casual small shipment a bad place to start.
The fact that a supplier will sell it to you does not mean Nigeria will allow you to import and sell it without additional requirements.
How to start mini importation from China to Nigeria #
The process is easier when you separate it into steps.
Step 1: Find the customer before the product #
Do not begin by scrolling through 1688 looking for something that looks interesting.
Start with demand.
Look at what people around you are already buying.
Check:
- TikTok
- Facebook Marketplace
- Jumia
- Nigerian wholesalers
- Local shops
- WhatsApp vendors
Ask:
What is selling?
What are people complaining is too expensive?
What has repeat demand?
Can I sell it without educating the customer for twenty minutes?
For a beginner, a proven product is usually safer than trying to create demand from nothing.
Step 2: Check the Nigerian selling price #
Before contacting a Chinese supplier, find out what the product sells for in Nigeria.
Look at:
- Retail price
- Wholesale price
- Competitor delivery cost
- Different quality levels
Suppose the product sells for:
₦15,000
Do not assume buying it for ₦4,000 in China gives you ₦11,000 profit.
You have not calculated the import cost yet.
Step 3: Find the product in China #
The two most useful platforms for Nigerian mini importers are usually:
1688
and
Alibaba
1688 #
1688 is designed mainly for China's domestic market.
It can offer very competitive wholesale pricing.
But many sellers expect:
- Payment in yuan
- Chinese communication
- Chinese delivery address
That is why Nigerian buyers often use a sourcing or purchasing agent.
Alibaba #
Alibaba is designed for international buyers.
It is often easier for:
- English communication
- Samples
- International payments
- Export suppliers
- Trade Assurance
But the price can sometimes be higher than domestic Chinese platforms.
Our 1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao guide explains when each platform makes sense.
If the Chinese interface is confusing, read our 1688 English version guide.
Step 4: Get at least three quotations #
Do not buy from the first supplier.
Compare at least three.
Make sure they are quoting the same:
- Product
- Material
- Size
- Colour
- Quantity
- Packaging
- Specification
One supplier offering a product for ¥8 and another offering it for ¥15 may not actually be selling the same quality.
Ask:
“What is the price for 20, 50 and 100 pieces?”
This shows you where the quantity discounts start.
Step 5: Order a sample when the risk justifies it #
For a cheap, simple product, you may not need to courier one individual unit separately.
For products where quality matters, a sample can save you from buying 100 bad pieces.
Samples are particularly useful for:
- Clothing
- Electronics
- Private-label products
- Hair
- Beauty equipment
- Custom products
- Products from a new supplier
Our samples from China to Nigeria guide explains what to check before approving bulk production.
Nigeria's $300 de minimis rule #
Nigeria introduced an official US$300 de minimis threshold effective from 8 September 2025.
For qualifying shipments valued at US$300 or less, Customs provides exemption from import duties and related taxes.
The framework covers:
- Low-value imports
- E-commerce consignments
- Passenger baggage
But there are important conditions.
You cannot use the $300 exemption endlessly #
The exemption is limited to:
Four qualifying importations per year per importer or traveller.
It is not:
$300 every week
or:
$300 every time you want to restock.
After you outgrow that level, expect your imports to move into normal Customs assessment and commercial import procedures.
Prohibited and restricted goods do not qualify #
The $300 rule does not make an illegal or restricted import legal.
If an item is prohibited or requires regulatory approval, putting it inside a $250 parcel does not remove that requirement.
Always check the product itself.
Do not split one shipment to avoid duty #
Suppose you have a $900 order.
Sending it as:
$300 + $300 + $300
purely to manipulate the de minimis threshold is not a safe strategy.
Nigeria Customs specifically warns against artificial splitting and abuse of the exemption.
Use the rule for genuine low-value consignments.
Do not build your entire business model around trying to avoid Customs assessment.
What is SCADS? #
Nigeria Customs now operates the Simplified Customs Advance Declaration System — SCADS for cross-border e-commerce shipments.
The system is intended to simplify and speed up Customs processing for e-commerce cargo.
Individual buyers can register using their identification details, while businesses can participate using business and tax information.
This is important because small e-commerce shipments are increasingly becoming part of a formal digital Customs process.
Mini importation does not mean:
“Customs does not know about the goods.”
It means you are importing on a smaller scale.
Do mini importers need Form M? #
Do not use the old rule:
“Small goods never need Form M.”
Nigeria's formal import procedure uses Form M and PAAR for ordinary commercial cargo, while qualifying low-value e-commerce shipments now have simplified Customs arrangements such as SCADS and the de minimis framework.
The correct procedure depends on:
- Shipment type
- Value
- Product
- Import route
- Regulatory requirements
- Whether you are importing as ordinary commercial cargo or qualifying e-commerce
As your operation grows from small parcels into commercial consignments in your own name, Form M becomes an increasingly important part of the process.
Our Form M Nigeria import guide explains the formal import route.
Step 6: Use a China warehouse #
Many 1688 sellers will not ship directly to Nigeria.
They deliver domestically inside China.
That means you need a Chinese warehouse address.
The process looks like this:
Supplier → China warehouse → consolidation → international freight → Nigeria
If you buy from five suppliers, all five can send their products to the same warehouse.
The warehouse or sourcing agent can then:
- Receive goods
- Count cartons
- Record suppliers
- Combine shipments
- Repack where necessary
- Measure weight
- Prepare the cargo for Nigeria
Our shipping from 1688 to Nigeria guide explains the complete route.
Step 7: Check the goods before shipping #
For a small low-cost order, photographs or warehouse checks may be enough.
As the value increases, proper inspection becomes more important.
At minimum, confirm:
- Quantity
- Correct colour
- Correct size
- Product appearance
- Packaging
- Obvious defects
For a larger order, use proper pre-shipment inspection.
You do not want to pay air freight to transport defective products from China to Nigeria.
Our quality inspection in China guide explains how professional inspection works.
Step 8: Ship by air #
Most true mini-importation orders travel by air because they are relatively small.
Air cargo pricing is commonly based on the greater of:
Actual weight
or
Volumetric weight
That difference matters.
A product can weigh only 5kg but occupy enough space to be charged as 10kg or more.
Always ask your freight company:
- Rate per kilogram
- Minimum charge
- Actual or volumetric calculation
- Customs included or excluded
- China warehouse charges
- Nigerian delivery included or excluded
- Expected transit time
- Restricted products
- Battery surcharge
Our shipping cost from China to Nigeria per kg guide explains the calculation.
What does “door-to-door shipping” mean? #
Be careful with this phrase.
Two freight companies can both advertise:
Door to door
while including different things.
Ask whether the quoted rate includes:
- China receiving
- Export handling
- International freight
- Customs clearance
- Duties and taxes
- Lagos warehouse collection
- Delivery to your address
Do not assume.
Get the complete cost before buying the products.
How long does mini importation from China take? #
Air freight is faster than sea freight, but there is no universal delivery time.
Transit depends on:
- Airline capacity
- Cargo route
- China warehouse processing
- Product type
- Customs clearance
- Nigerian destination
- Consolidation schedule
Some services may complete the journey within several days.
Others can take one to two weeks or longer.
Do not promise your customer a delivery date based only on the flight time.
Our China to Nigeria shipping-time guide explains the difference between transit time and real door-to-door time.
NAFDAC and mini importation #
This is where many social-media mini-importation tutorials become dangerous.
NAFDAC regulates categories including:
- Food
- Drugs
- Cosmetics
- Medical devices
- Herbal products
- Dietary supplements
- Certain chemicals
If you are importing regulated products commercially for sale in Nigeria, applicable NAFDAC registration, permits and clearance requirements still matter.
The shipment being small does not automatically remove those requirements.
Be careful with skincare and cosmetics #
Beginners are often attracted to:
- Serums
- Creams
- Lotions
- Makeup
- Skincare
- Supplements
- Weight-loss products
because they appear cheap in China and profitable in Nigeria.
But these are exactly the kinds of products where regulatory compliance matters.
Do not order 50 bottles of an unknown cream simply because the supplier says:
“Very popular in Africa.”
Before importing regulated products for sale, check whether the product and importer need NAFDAC registration or another approval.
NAFDAC maintains an official database of registered products.
Beauty accessories are different from cosmetics #
A makeup brush is not automatically treated the same way as the cream applied with it.
Simple accessories may be easier to import than the regulated cosmetic formulation itself.
Examples can include:
- Cosmetic bags
- Brushes
- Hair accessories
- Mirrors
- Non-medical beauty tools
But product classification still matters.
Do not assume every item called a beauty product has identical requirements.
Phones are no longer a casual mini-import product #
Nigeria's phone-import environment changed in 2026.
The Nigerian Communications Commission has started implementing its Device Management System for SIM-enabled devices.
Newly imported SIM-enabled devices must be appropriately registered, and the NCC says devices that are not duly registered will not be permitted to operate on Nigerian networks.
That means importing random phones because they are cheap in China has become much riskier.
If you want to sell phones, read our buying phones from China to Nigeria guide first.
Phone accessories are a different category.
Do you need CAC registration for mini importation? #
Do not confuse Customs' ability to process an individual buyer with running a business legally over time.
Nigeria Customs' e-commerce system allows individuals as well as companies to register as importers.
But if you are carrying on business under a business name, CAC registration becomes part of formalising that operation.
CAC allows individual proprietors to register a business name online without hiring a lawyer or other professional.
Registration gives you a formal business identity and helps when you need things such as:
- Corporate banking
- Business contracts
- Supplier relationships
- Payment gateways
- Regulatory applications
- Formal import documentation
- Wholesale customers
Do not wait until you have a large shipment stuck in a business process before thinking about registration.
The calculation that decides whether a product will make money #
This is the most important part of mini importation.
Calculate:
Product cost
-
China local delivery
-
Agent or purchasing fee
-
Warehouse charges
-
International freight
-
Customs charges where applicable
-
Nigerian delivery
-
Packaging
-
Payment charges
-
Expected losses and damaged units
= Total landed cost
Then divide by the number of sellable units.
That gives you:
Landed cost per unit
Only then should you calculate profit.
Mini importation example #
Suppose you buy:
50 units
at:
₦2,000 equivalent each
Product cost:
₦100,000
Then you spend:
- China delivery: ₦8,000
- Agent charges: ₦7,000
- Air freight: ₦55,000
- Other handling: ₦10,000
Total:
₦180,000
Landed cost per unit:
₦180,000 ÷ 50 = ₦3,600
If the product sells for:
₦5,000
your gross margin is:
₦1,400 per unit
not ₦3,000.
And you still may need to pay for:
- Customer delivery
- Advertising
- Returns
- Damaged items
- Unsold stock
This is why buying price alone tells you almost nothing.
Weight can matter more than product price #
Imagine two products.
Product A #
China price:
₦1,500
Weight:
800g
Product B #
China price:
₦2,500
Weight:
100g
Product B may actually be the better mini-importation product because many more units fit into one kilogram of air freight.
Always ask the supplier for:
- Unit weight
- Packed weight
- Carton dimensions
- Number per carton
before buying.
Watch the yuan-to-naira conversion #
Another hidden cost is the exchange rate.
If an agent is paying a 1688 supplier in yuan for you, ask:
“What CNY/NGN rate are you using today?”
Do not look only at the sourcing commission.
An agent charging a low visible commission but using an expensive exchange rate may cost more overall.
Our how to pay a Chinese supplier from Nigeria guide explains the main payment routes.
Do not choose products from screenshots #
A common mini-importation pattern is:
Someone posts a Chinese product screenshot showing:
¥10
and a Nigerian retail screenshot showing:
₦15,000
Then claims the difference is your profit.
That calculation is incomplete.
Ask:
- What is the actual quality?
- What is the MOQ?
- What does it weigh?
- What is China delivery?
- What is the air-freight cost?
- Is it regulated?
- What are competitors selling it for?
- How quickly does it sell?
- How many customers actually buy at ₦15,000?
Screenshots do not calculate landed cost.
Should you pay for a mini importation course? #
You do not need a course simply to understand the process.
The mechanics are straightforward:
Research → source → calculate → buy → consolidate → ship → clear → sell
What no course can guarantee is the most important part:
That your particular product will sell to your particular customers at a profitable price.
Be cautious when someone promises:
- Guaranteed income
- Guaranteed products
- Guaranteed daily sales
- Secret Chinese suppliers nobody else can access
- Huge profit without discussing freight
- Importing regulated products without compliance
- Customs avoidance
- “No risk” importing
A good trainer should teach you how to calculate and verify.
Not just show you screenshots of possible profit.
Common mini importation mistakes #
Buying too much on the first order #
Your first order is a test.
Let the market prove the product before you increase quantity.
Ignoring freight before ordering #
Get the packed weight and shipping estimate first.
Choosing products because they are cheap #
Cheap does not mean profitable.
Importing regulated goods without checking #
Do your Nigerian compliance research before payment.
Using only one supplier #
Compare several suppliers.
Paying for goods without checking quality #
A supplier's product photo is not quality control.
Spending all your capital on stock #
Keep money for:
- Freight
- Customs
- Marketing
- Customer delivery
- Returns
- Reordering
Treating revenue as profit #
Selling ₦500,000 worth of products does not mean you made ₦500,000.
Calculate your real costs.
How to test a mini importation product #
For a first order:
Start small.
For example:
- Research the Nigerian selling price
- Find three Chinese suppliers
- Calculate landed cost
- Import a small batch
- Photograph the actual product
- Sell it
- Record customer feedback
- Measure how quickly it sells
- Reorder only if the numbers work
A product that sells out quickly deserves more capital.
A product that sits for three months does not deserve a bigger order because the supplier offered a discount.
When mini importation becomes normal importing #
A successful product eventually reaches a point where air freight stops making sense.
You may discover that you are importing:
- 100kg every month
- Several hundred cartons
- Large-volume stock
- Repeated commercial consignments
At that stage, compare air freight with:
- Sea consolidation
- LCL shipping
- CBM pricing
- Full container shipping
Formal import documentation and regulatory compliance also become increasingly important as the business scales.
The business has not failed.
It has simply outgrown the mini part.
Our shipping from China to Nigeria guide explains the larger import route.
Mini importation or sea freight? #
Use air when the product is:
- Small
- Light
- Urgent
- High value relative to weight
- Being tested in small quantities
Consider sea freight when the product becomes:
- Heavy
- Bulky
- High-volume
- Regularly reordered
- Too expensive to fly profitably
Do not stay with air freight just because that is how you started.
Your logistics should change as your business grows.
The safest way to start mini importation in Nigeria #
Keep the first order boring.
Choose a product you understand.
Check that people already buy it.
Avoid complicated regulatory categories.
Compare suppliers.
Know the packed weight.
Calculate the landed cost before paying.
Use a reliable Chinese receiving warehouse.
Start with enough units to test demand, not enough to impress people on Instagram.
Then let actual sales tell you what to do next.
The simplest mini-importation formula is:
Find demand → calculate landed cost → import small → sell → measure → reorder winners
That is the business.
Not screenshots.
Not courses.
Not the cheapest price on 1688.
If the numbers work after the product lands in Nigeria, you have something worth scaling.
Start here, it takes about two minutes
Tell us what you need. A person from the ChinaBridge desk will reply on WhatsApp, usually the same working day.
Buying, selling, shipping, a visa or the paperwork, it is the same desk. Nothing is payable to open a file, and nothing is due until you have agreed a plan in writing.
