Importing phone accessories from China to Nigeria

A phone accessories import is the classic first order: light, in constant demand, cheap to test. The certificate, the battery problem, and the arithmetic.

Phone accessories are the product almost every Nigerian importer starts with, and for good reasons that have nothing to do with the course sellers who recommend them. They are light, which makes air freight affordable. They are high value per kilogram. They break, get lost and go out of fashion, so demand repeats. And a first order can be small enough to be a real test rather than a gamble. This page is what to buy, what it needs to clear, and the one category inside it that is far harder than the rest.

What sells, and what that means for freight #

The accessories trade covers chargers and adapters, cables, cases and covers, screen protectors, earbuds and headphones, power banks, holders and mounts, selfie sticks and ring lights, memory cards, and small speakers.

The freight arithmetic favours you here. Air freight is charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, and accessories are mostly dense rather than bulky. A carton of cables weighs more than it measures, so you pay for the weight rather than for air. Our shipping cost page explains the divisor and why it matters.

That is why accessories can fly economically when furniture cannot. A first order arriving in a week rather than eight weeks also means you learn faster.

The certificate #

Electrical and electronic products are a SONCAP regulated category. That means a product certificate and a SONCAP certificate before the goods ship, with the conformity assessment done in China rather than at Apapa.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria's published fees are 500 dollars for a product certificate on the unregistered route, which covers a single shipment and lasts six months, 1,000 dollars on the registered route and 2,000 dollars on the licensed route, both lasting twelve months and covering repeat shipments, plus 350 dollars for each SONCAP certificate.

Look at those numbers against a small first order and you will see the problem immediately: 850 dollars of certification on a 1,500 dollar order is not a business. Two conclusions follow.

First, the economics of accessories reward volume, and the registered route at 1,000 dollars a year covering repeat shipments is the sensible shape once you are running. Second, the honest first step is a sample order, which is not a commercial consignment, and then a properly certified commercial order once you know the product sells. Our samples page covers the difference.

The penalty for arriving without SONCAP is 20 percent of CIF value or 2 million naira, whichever is higher. That is not a risk worth carrying on a margin business.

The battery problem #

Here is the split inside the category that catches people.

Cases, cables, screen protectors, holders and memory cards are ordinary cargo.

Power banks, and anything with a rechargeable cell in it, are dangerous goods. A power bank is a lithium ion battery on its own, UN 3480, and batteries on their own are forbidden as cargo on passenger aircraft, which is where most affordable air freight rides. They must be shipped at no more than 30 percent state of charge. DHL's ordinary eCommerce parcel service will not take power banks internationally at all.

Wireless earbuds and small speakers contain batteries inside equipment, which is an easier category, but still needs the UN38.3 test summary from the supplier and still needs the agent to know what is in the carton.

Our battery shipping page is the full set of rules. The short version for a beginner: keep power banks out of your first order, and add them once you have an agent who handles dangerous goods.

Buying without getting the counterfeit version #

The accessories market on 1688 and at Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen sells three tiers of the same looking product: original brand, unbranded generic, and counterfeit branded. The third is the one that ends badly.

Counterfeit and pirated articles sit on Nigeria's absolute prohibition list under the Customs Service Act 2023, and the Merchandise Marks Act makes dealing in goods with forged trademarks a criminal offence. A carton of cables in somebody else's branded packaging is not a bargain; it is a seizure. Our counterfeit page explains the exposure properly.

Buy unbranded, or buy your own brand printed on it. A generic cable with your own packaging is legal, defensible and, over time, worth more than reselling somebody else's name.

For where to buy, our Shenzhen electronics page covers Huaqiangbei and our 1688 guide covers ordering without reading Chinese.

What does quality mean for a phone accessories import? #

Accessories fail in predictable ways, and the failures come back to you.

Order samples of every variant before the bulk order and test them in your hand. Our quality inspection page covers getting somebody to check the bulk order before it ships.

The arithmetic #

Work out the landed cost per unit, not per carton: goods, Chinese inland freight, consolidation, air or sea freight, duty, VAT, port charges, clearing and haulage, at the exchange rate you actually paid. Our landed cost page has the method and our margin page covers what to do with the answer.

Then compare it against the real selling price in Computer Village or online, after the discount you will inevitably give to move the last third of the stock.

A phone accessories import is a good business when the numbers are done and an expensive hobby when they are not. The product is fine. The arithmetic is the job.
