Best products to import from China to Nigeria, honestly
The best products to import from China pass four filters: legal to import, certifiable, sellable at a Nigerian price, and small enough to survive a mistake.

Every list of the best products to import from China to Nigeria says the same four things, and every one of them is written by somebody selling a course. Phone accessories, human hair, solar, fashion. The lists are not wrong so much as useless, because the product was never the hard part. The hard part is the four filters underneath it, and a product that fails any of them loses money no matter how good the margin looked on 1688. This page is those filters, and then what actually passes them in 2026.
Filter one: is it legal to import? #
Start here, because it is free to check and it is where the expensive mistakes live. Nigeria's import prohibition list bans a set of finished goods that first time importers pick precisely because they seem easy: footwear, bags, furniture, plastic household wares, used clothing, used fridges, used air conditioners and used compressors. From 1 April 2026 a further seventeen items from outside ECOWAS joined the list, including bagged cement.
Used tyres are banned outright. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria stated at a training for importers and vulcanisers on 7 April 2023 that all second hand tyres qualify for seizure and destruction, and Customs separately prohibits retreaded and used pneumatic tyres, with a narrow exception for large truck tyres brought in for retreading.
Our prohibited imports page has the whole list. Read it before you read any product list, including this one.
Filter two: can you certify it? #
Most manufactured goods need a SONCAP certificate before they may be cleared. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria's published fees are 500 dollars for a product certificate on the unregistered route, 1,000 dollars on the registered route and 2,000 dollars on the licensed route, plus 350 dollars for each SONCAP certificate. The unregistered certificate lasts six months and covers one shipment; the other two last twelve months and cover repeat shipments.
The penalty for arriving without one is 20 percent of the CIF value or 2 million naira, whichever is higher, on SON's own wording.
Food, drugs, cosmetics, chemicals and medical devices are outside SONCAP and inside NAFDAC, which is a slower and more expensive door. Phones need type approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission. Our page on which certificate your product needs is the decision tree, and it is the single most useful thing on this site for a beginner.
The practical consequence: a 300 dollar test order of a certifiable product is fine, because SONCAP applies to commercial consignments rather than samples. A 3,000 dollar first container of an uncertified regulated product is a 2 million naira penalty waiting at Apapa.
Filter three: does the arithmetic survive Nigeria? #
This is where most product lists lie by omission. The price on 1688 is not your cost. Your cost is the goods, the Chinese inland freight, the consolidation, the sea or air freight, the insurance, the duty, the VAT, the port charges, the clearing agent, the inland haulage and the exchange rate on the day you paid. Our landed cost guide works it through with a real example, and our duty calculator page does the government side.
Then compare that against what the goods actually sell for in Onitsha or Aba or online, not against what you hope. If the answer is thin, no amount of hustle fixes it. Our margin page covers the arithmetic and the break even quantity.
Filter four: can you afford to be wrong? #
The first order is tuition. Something will go wrong: the colour will be different, the quality will be a grade below the sample, the carton count will be short, or the market will not want it at your price.
So the right first order is small enough that the lesson is affordable and large enough to be a real test. Our capital page sets out what different amounts actually buy, and our samples page covers testing before you commit.
So what passes all four? #
Things that are light, unregulated or easily certified, not counterfeit, and genuinely wanted:
Phone accessories. Chargers, cables, cases, earbuds, holders. Light, high value per kilogram, constant replacement demand. Electrical items need SONCAP. Our phone accessories page covers it, and anything with a lithium cell in it has its own shipping problem.
Human hair and beauty tools. A large, price insensitive Nigerian market. Our human hair page is the buying guide. Note that finished cosmetics are a NAFDAC matter and a different business entirely.
Solar components. Real and growing demand, and our solar page covers the duty position. Batteries inside a solar kit bring dangerous goods rules with them.
Auto parts. Enormous demand, and enormous counterfeit risk, which our auto parts page deals with directly.
Building materials that are not banned. Tiles, sanitary ware, aluminium, fittings. Heavy, so the freight arithmetic decides it. Our building materials page has the rules.
Packaging and small machinery for Nigerian manufacturers, which is a quieter business with better margins than anything sold on Instagram.
What to avoid on a first order #
Anything branded that you did not buy from the brand. Counterfeit and pirated articles sit on Nigeria's absolute prohibition list under the Customs Service Act 2023, and the Merchandise Marks Act makes dealing in goods with forged trademarks a criminal offence. Our counterfeit page explains the exposure.
Anything on the prohibition list, however clever the workaround somebody describes.
Anything regulated by NAFDAC unless you are prepared for a registration that officially takes 120 working days.
And anything you chose because a list called it profitable. The best products to import from China are whatever is left after the four filters, not whatever the video said. The product is the last decision, not the first. Our page on what not to import is the other half of this one.
