1688 English Version: How to Use 1688 from Nigeria

There is no official 1688 English version. How Nigerians read 1688 in English, why the account and the shipping are the real problems, and what an agent solves.

A phone screen showing a 1688 product page translated into English in Chrome, held over a desk with a notebook

Yes, you can use 1688 in English from Nigeria.

The main 1688.com website is still built primarily for China's domestic wholesale market, but things have changed. The official 1688 app now advertises multilingual support, international payment options and logistics for global buyers, while 1688 Global is specifically designed for overseas buyers.

For Nigerian importers, however, translation is the easy part.

The real questions are:

How do you pay? Who receives the goods in China? Is the supplier genuine? Is the displayed price real? What will shipping cost? And after everything reaches Nigeria, is 1688 still cheaper than Alibaba?

That is what matters.

What is 1688? #

1688.com is Alibaba Group's Chinese domestic wholesale marketplace. Alibaba describes it as China's leading integrated domestic wholesale platform, connecting buyers with manufacturers and wholesalers across many industries.

Think of the difference this way:

Alibaba.com is built for international buyers.

1688 is built around the Chinese wholesale market.

That is why 1688 attracts Nigerian traders.

You may find products closer to Chinese domestic wholesale prices, sometimes from the same types of manufacturers selling internationally at higher prices.

But the lower price comes with more work.

A supplier on Alibaba may already understand export packaging, international payments and overseas buyers.

A 1688 supplier may simply expect you to pay in China and give them a Chinese warehouse address.

So do not judge 1688 only by the product price.

The cheapest price on 1688 is only useful if the goods can reach Nigeria at a profitable landed cost.

Is there an official 1688 English version? #

The answer in 2026 is more nuanced than it used to be.

1688.com website #

The main website is still heavily Chinese.

For most Nigerians using a laptop, the easiest solution is Chrome.

Open 1688.com, use Translate to English, and most product titles, specifications, prices and seller information become readable.

The translation will not always be perfect, especially for technical products, fabrics and manufacturing terms.

But it is normally enough for product research.

Official 1688 app #

The official 1688 app now says it provides global buyers with multi-language support, international payment options and logistics services.

This is useful, but do not assume every feature will work identically for every Nigerian account, product or supplier.

1688 Global #

There is also an official 1688 Global app designed for overseas buyers, with multilingual interfaces and services around payment and logistics.

So be careful with old guides saying there is absolutely no official international 1688 experience.

That information is now outdated.

Also be careful with websites calling themselves “1688 English.”

Some are sourcing agents or third-party platforms showing translated 1688 listings. They may provide a useful service, but they are not necessarily Alibaba or 1688.

Know who you are giving your money and login information to.

How to search 1688 from Nigeria #

Do not rely only on English keywords.

A better method is:

English product name → translate to Chinese → search 1688 → read results in English.

Why?

Because most sellers write their listings for Chinese buyers.

Suppose you want women's handbags.

Searching only in English may give weaker results.

Translate the product name into Chinese and search again, and you are usually searching the marketplace in the language suppliers actually use.

This can expose more products, suppliers and price levels.

Use image search too #

This is especially useful for Nigerian traders.

Maybe you see a bag at Balogun Market.

A rechargeable fan is trending on Instagram.

A customer sends you a shoe they want.

Or you find a product on Alibaba and want to know whether it appears cheaper on 1688.

Save a clear image and use 1688's image search.

You can quickly compare similar products from different suppliers.

Then look at:

Finding the product is the easy part.

Now you need to make sure you are comparing the same product.

Do not trust the first price you see #

This is one of the easiest ways for a new importer to miscalculate profit.

You see a product listed at ¥8.

You want 500 pieces.

So you calculate:

¥8 × 500

The business looks profitable.

Then the supplier tells you the version you actually selected is ¥15 or ¥18.

The ¥8 price may have been for:

Always open the product variations and quantity brackets.

Before payment, confirm:

product + model + material + size + colour + quantity + unit price + packaging.

For electronics, machinery, auto parts, solar products and similar goods, confirm technical specifications too.

A product photograph is not a specification sheet.

Why do Nigerian importers use 1688? #

Mostly because of price and supplier access.

A difference that looks small per unit can become substantial when you buy in bulk.

If you save ₦500 per unit:

100 pieces = ₦50,000

1,000 pieces = ₦500,000

5,000 pieces = ₦2.5 million

That is why serious traders are willing to put more effort into sourcing.

1688 can also be useful for:

But do not approach 1688 like Jumia.

You are not simply placing an online order.

You are managing a supply chain between China and Nigeria.

How do you pay 1688 from Nigeria? #

This used to be one of the biggest barriers.

1688 was designed around China's payment system, so Nigerian buyers could not simply assume their normal naira card would work the same way it does on an international shopping website.

Cross-border options have improved.

WorldFirst currently offers World Pay, a payment service developed for international 1688 buyers. Its Africa site specifically explains 1688 purchasing for buyers including Nigeria and says international buyers can pay participating 1688 orders without needing a mainland Chinese bank account.

Depending on your setup and eligibility, Nigerian buyers may use:

But there is something Nigerian buyers often overlook:

exchange rate.

Suppose an agent says the purchasing fee is only 2%.

That sounds cheap.

But what yuan-to-naira rate are they using?

If the agent gives you a poor exchange rate, you can lose more money through currency conversion than through the service fee.

Ask for:

Product cost

Agent/service fee

Yuan exchange rate

China domestic delivery

Other payment charges

before sending money.

Our guide to paying Chinese suppliers from Nigeria covers the payment side in more detail.

You still need somewhere to receive the goods in China #

This is the part beginners often discover too late.

Do not assume every 1688 supplier will ship your cartons directly to Lagos.

A typical order may look like this:

1688 supplier → China warehouse → consolidation → air/sea freight → Nigeria

Suppose you order:

shoes from Guangzhou,

electronics from Shenzhen,

bags from Yiwu,

and furniture accessories from Foshan.

Instead of arranging four international shipments, you can send the goods to one warehouse in China.

The warehouse can receive everything and prepare it for Nigeria.

Depending on the service you use, the warehouse may:

This is consolidation.

It is one of the reasons having a reliable China-side partner can make 1688 much easier for Nigerian importers.

Read our guide to shipping goods from 1688 to Nigeria for the full route.

Cheap product, wrong quality #

This is a bigger danger than translation.

You order a handbag that looks perfect in the photo.

It arrives in Nigeria.

The material feels cheap.

Or the shoe sole is too soft.

The extension socket plastic is thin.

The hair density is lower than expected.

The rechargeable fan battery lasts one hour instead of four.

The supplier may not even have scammed you.

The problem may be that you ordered by appearance instead of specification.

Chinese factories can often manufacture several quality levels of products that look almost identical online.

So instead of asking only:

“How much?”

ask about the things that determine quality.

For different products, that might include:

And for a serious order, get a sample or inspection.

A ₦30,000 sample can be cheaper than discovering the mistake inside ₦5 million worth of stock.

How do you check a 1688 supplier? #

Use the information 1688 gives you, but do not rely on one badge.

Look at:

Then look at the store itself.

A supposed factory selling wigs, tyres, kitchen equipment, handbags, phones and children's toys from the same shop deserves more investigation.

A specialist manufacturer will usually have some consistency in what it produces.

For larger orders, verification should go beyond the marketplace profile.

Our Chinese supplier checking guide explains what to verify before sending serious money.

Factory or trading company: which is better? #

Do not automatically assume factory means better.

Factories can offer excellent pricing when you buy volume.

But they may also have higher minimum orders.

Imagine you need:

100 handbags
100 wallets
100 belts
100 sunglasses

Four factories may each require 500 or 1,000 pieces.

A trader may offer all four products in the quantities you actually need.

You pay a slightly higher unit price, but you avoid tying millions of naira into stock you have not tested.

For a Nigerian retailer testing a market, that can be the smarter deal.

Factories become more attractive when:

Do not chase the word factory.

Chase the supplier structure that makes the business profitable.

Check Nigerian import rules before paying #

Your Chinese supplier's job is to manufacture or sell the product.

It is not necessarily their job to understand Nigerian import regulations.

A supplier may know nothing about:

So before buying 2,000 pieces, answer one question:

Can this product legally and practically enter Nigeria?

This matters especially for regulated categories such as cosmetics, food products, telecom equipment, electronics, batteries and some children's products.

Do not wait until the goods reach Lagos before discovering that you needed documentation from the manufacturer before shipment.

Start with our Nigeria prohibited imports guide and product certificate guide.

Is 1688 cheaper than Alibaba for Nigerians? #

Often at product level.

Not always at landed-cost level.

This is the comparison you should make:

**1688 product price

Then compare that total with the complete cost of buying through Alibaba.

For large or repeat orders, 1688 can be very attractive.

For a tiny order, the saving may disappear after all the extra costs.

The lesson is simple:

Compare landed cost, not website price.

Our landed cost from China to Nigeria guide can help you calculate it properly.

Do you need a 1688 agent in Nigeria? #

Not necessarily.

If you can handle payment, supplier communication, China warehousing, inspection and shipping yourself, you may not need one.

But a good agent is useful when you cannot.

What matters is what the agent actually does.

Before paying an agent, ask for:

A good purchasing partner should make the transaction clearer.

If they make the numbers harder to understand, that is a problem.

First 1688 order? Start small #

Do not put ₦5 million into your first order simply because the prices look good.

Start by testing the chain.

Find the product.

Compare suppliers.

Confirm specifications.

Check Nigerian requirements.

Calculate landed cost.

Buy samples if necessary.

Confirm what reaches the China warehouse.

Then scale.

The goal is not to make one lucky import.

The goal is to find a supplier and shipping process you can use repeatedly.

Example: buying rechargeable fans from 1688 #

Suppose you find a rechargeable fan for ¥38.

Do not immediately order 500.

First ask:

What battery capacity?

How many hours does it run?

What voltage?

Which plug?

What motor?

What material?

What accessories are included?

What is the carton size?

How many units per carton?

What is the gross weight?

Is there a cheaper and more expensive version?

What certification or documentation will be required in Nigeria?

Can the factory reproduce the exact same model on your next order?

Those questions tell you whether you have found a product.

The ¥38 price only tells you that you found a listing.

Best way to use 1688 from Nigeria #

Use 1688 to find products and Chinese wholesale suppliers.

Use translation to handle the language.

Use Chinese keywords and image search to improve your product search.

Verify the supplier.

Confirm specifications.

Calculate the real cost.

Arrange payment.

Send the goods to a reliable China warehouse.

Inspect important orders.

Consolidate when it saves money.

Then ship to Nigeria using the method that makes sense for your product.

That is how 1688 becomes useful to a Nigerian business.

Not because the product looks cheap.

Because you have built a route from the supplier's warehouse in China to your business in Nigeria.
