Parcel Held by Customs in Nigeria: What to Do
A parcel held by Customs in Nigeria needs a clear explanation before you spend more money or send documents to anyone. The next step depends on whether the issue is paperwork, an inspection, a regulatory requirement or an unpaid charge.
Start with the courier's detailed tracking record and verified support channel. Ask what is missing, who must provide it and whether there is a response deadline.
This guide covers courier parcels, including purchases and samples from China. Information was checked against official carrier guidance on 27 October 2026.
What does the tracking message actually mean? #
Read the exact wording, event location and date. A shipment can encounter clearance checks in the origin country, a transit location or Nigeria.
An on-hold message alone does not establish a Nigerian Customs problem. Couriers also use hold messages for operational issues, incomplete contact details and delivery arrangements.
A clearance update may describe progress without confirming release. Look for the detailed explanation rather than treating every new scan as approval.
DHL's current Nigeria guidance identifies missing information, supporting documents, inspection, compliance review and unpaid duties or taxes as possible causes of a Customs hold.
Save a screenshot of the latest detailed event. If an agent booked the shipment, obtain the actual international waybill and courier name. A Chinese domestic delivery reference may belong to an earlier leg.
What should you do first when Customs holds a parcel? #
Contact the carrier through its official website or app. For example, use DHL Express Nigeria support or FedEx Nigeria support when those companies handle your shipment.
Ask these questions:
- Where is the parcel currently held?
- What is the exact outstanding requirement?
- Does the sender, recipient or clearance team need to act?
- Where should the information be submitted?
- Is there a deadline or an applicable storage charge?
Request a case reference and keep it with your waybill number. Notify the Chinese seller promptly if the courier needs corrected shipment paperwork.
If the parcel uses a postal or marketplace logistics service, identify the named Nigerian delivery operator. The contact route for an express courier may not apply to that network.
Which documents should you prepare? #
FedEx's Nigeria guidance identifies the commercial invoice and air waybill as the main clearance documents. Other requirements depend on the shipment's origin, destination and goods.
Prepare the requested records, which may include:
- The seller's invoice with item descriptions, quantities, values and currency.
- The international waybill or shipment reference.
- The purchase confirmation and relevant payment evidence, if requested.
- A packing breakdown for multiple items or parcels.
- Product specifications, model numbers or photographs explaining the contents.
- Any shipment-specific permit or regulatory document the clearance team identifies.
Use the commercial invoice guide to check the seller's document. Compare the consignee and shipment details against the air waybill.
For illustration, an order confirmation listing 20 items and an invoice listing 10 need an explanation. Check whether the seller made a partial shipment before requesting a correction.
Descriptions such as accessories or samples may be too vague. State what the item is, what it is made of and its intended use. Do not invent a lower value to make the paperwork appear easier.
Ask which product certificate or approval applies to the actual goods. Do not assume every small parcel follows the same document route as a full container.
How do you check duties, fees and payment requests? #
Ask for an itemised explanation. Customs duties and taxes, courier administration, storage and specialist clearance services are different charge categories.
DHL's Nigeria service schedule lists separate customs-service charges. That does not mean every parcel incurs every listed fee.
Before paying, confirm:
- Which shipment the bill covers.
- Who issued the bill and who receives payment.
- Which amounts are government charges and which are service charges.
- Why each additional charge applies.
- Whether the sender already arranged to pay the relevant charges.
If the seller promised DDP shipping to Nigeria, send that agreement to the booking party and request clarification. Compare the promise with the courier's billing instructions before paying the same charge twice.
Verify unexpected payment messages through support you reach independently. A courier logo, convincing sender name or correct tracking number does not by itself authenticate a payment request.
Do not send banking passwords, card PINs or verification codes to someone offering to release the parcel. Enter any legitimate payment authentication only through the verified payment process.
What if the parcel stays on hold after you respond? #
For a parcel held by Customs in Nigeria, ask what remains outstanding rather than repeatedly resending the same files.
Confirm that the team received your documents and accepted them as sufficient. An uploaded file may still require clarification. If you paid an invoice, ask whether the payment has been allocated to the correct shipment.
Keep one case history showing the requested action, date submitted and latest response. Escalate through the courier's published support route when the promised update has not arrived.
Message you can send:
Hello, I am following up on shipment [waybill number], case [reference]. The latest tracking event is [exact wording, date and location]. I submitted [documents or payment evidence] on [date].
Please confirm receipt, the exact requirement still outstanding, who needs to act and the next expected update. Please also confirm any response deadline and whether storage charges apply, including their start date and calculation basis.
Do not travel to a warehouse solely because tracking shows an airport location. Obtain confirmation of release, collection arrangements and required identification first.
How can you prevent the next clearance delay? #
Before dispatch, ask the supplier and carrier to confirm the actual contents, destination requirements, recipient details and billing arrangement.
Check the documents before the seller hands over the parcel. If you use an agent, establish who receives clearance enquiries and who can correct the invoice.
For samples from China to Nigeria, agree how they will be described and valued. A free sample still needs an appropriate declared customs value; ask whether any relief applies to the particular shipment.
Keep an accessible order folder containing the invoice, payment record, product information, waybill and seller contact. Give the carrier a working phone number and email address.
For regulated or unusual products, resolve the document question before dispatch. Paying for faster transport does not remove clearance requirements.
What do Nigerian buyers ask about Customs holds? #
How long can a parcel held by Customs in Nigeria take to clear? #
There is no single period for every shipment. Ask what is outstanding and request a case-specific update; a general transit estimate is not a release guarantee.
Does a hold mean my parcel has been seized? #
The status alone does not establish seizure. Ask the courier whether this is a routine clearance query, a regulatory issue or a formal Customs action.
I already paid shipping, so why is there another bill? #
Transport payment does not establish that duties, taxes and all service charges were included. Check the booking terms and request an itemised explanation.
Does Customs release mean the parcel is ready for collection? #
It may still need transfer or delivery processing. Wait for the courier's collection confirmation and instructions before visiting a facility.
Can I hire someone else to clear the parcel? #
Ask the courier about its broker-transfer procedure and applicable charges first. If needed, use the clearing-agent selection guide before appointing someone.
Will paying the requested bill solve every hold? #
No. Documents, inspection or regulatory requirements may remain outstanding. Confirm the complete list of actions with the clearance team.
Can the parcel be returned to China? #
Ask the courier and sender which options are permitted and what they cost. Do not assume return is automatic, free or possible for every item.
