Container Seal Numbers: China to Nigeria Guide

Container seal numbers help Nigerian importers connect a loaded container with its shipping records. Ask for the reference and clear photographs after loading, then arrange checks at the relevant handover points.

The seal is one part of the evidence. It does not establish that the correct products, quantities or packing were inside when the doors were closed.

What is the seal number on a shipping container? #

On a closed shipping container, a numbered security seal is fitted to the door-locking arrangement. Its identifier allows the parties handling the shipment to record which seal was present.

Keep these references separate:

A container can have more than one seal reference to account for. Ask the loading team which references must appear in the shipment records.

Use the shipping-mark guide for carton identification. Putting your buyer reference on a box does not create a container-seal record.

Which shipping records should show the matching number? #

Compare the loading record, seal photographs and carrier documentation. Maersk's guidance tells buyers to check the seal reference against the bill of lading and identifies shipping instructions as the place the supplier provides it.

For a multi-container shipment, check each container-and-seal pairing separately. Matching a seal somewhere in a document is insufficient if it has been assigned to the wrong container.

Consider this fictional discrepancy:

The references differ. Ask the documentation team to investigate against the actual loading evidence. Do not assume it is harmless or immediately conclude that the container was opened.

Review the bill of lading checklist before approving a draft. Request any correction through the responsible shipping or documentation team and retain the confirmed version.

What should the loading team photograph? #

Agree the evidence you need before loading starts. Request a record connecting the goods, container and final seal:

Keep the loading date, location and responsible contact with the files. A close-up without the container context may leave you unable to connect the image to your shipment.

Label photograph files with the container reference and date so the clearing team can quickly retrieve the correct evidence.

You can send this message:

Please confirm the container reference and required seal type before loading. After loading, send the package-count record, photographs linking the goods to the container, a closed-door photograph and a readable close-up of the fitted seal. Confirm the same reference in the shipping instructions and tell us about any later authorised replacement.

Include the agreed checks in your China inspection brief. Confirm whether loading supervision is included; a product inspection and a loading record cover different work.

Why can container seal numbers change? #

An authorised inspection or other handling procedure may require a seal to be removed and replaced. A changed reference therefore needs an explanation and supporting records.

Ask the forwarder or carrier to identify:

Keep that explanation with the original loading evidence. A new photograph alone does not explain the change.

Carrier replacement procedures can differ by location. Follow the process applying to the actual shipment rather than assuming a published instruction for another country is the Nigerian procedure.

Do not conceal a discrepancy by editing a photograph or privately substituting a number in the paperwork. Ask the authorised documentation team to reconcile the record.

What should you check when the container reaches Nigeria? #

Agree with your Lagos clearing agent who will record the container identity, seal reference and visible condition at the permitted handover or inspection point.

If you cannot attend, request the available operator photographs and handover records. Ask when the observations were made and whether the container had already undergone an authorised opening.

If the seal is missing, damaged or different from the documented reference, record what is visible and notify the responsible forwarder, carrier and insurer promptly. Follow their applicable instructions before ordinary unpacking or changing the evidence.

Have the authorised handler follow the relevant opening procedure. A buyer's request to check a seal does not replace terminal, carrier or Customs arrangements.

During unloading, compare the actual goods and counts with the packing and loading records. If there is damage or a shortage, use the damaged-goods evidence checklist and ask about any required survey, notification or supporting documents.

Does this work differently for LCL shipments? #

With less-than-container-load shipping, your cartons share a container with other consignments. The consolidator controls the whole-container loading and unpacking stages.

Ask how its records connect your shipment to that movement. You may need the consignment reference, carton marks, warehouse receiving count, transport record and destination handover details.

The original ocean-container seal may already have been removed during authorised unpacking before your cartons reach the collection warehouse. Establish the documented sequence instead of expecting the original container seal on your individual packages.

For a small 1688 order, concentrate on identifiable cartons and the receiving-and-delivery trail while asking the forwarder about the container-stage records where relevant.

The LCL-versus-FCL guide explains the different shipping arrangements. Match the evidence request to the service you actually bought.

What questions do Nigerian importers ask? #

Are the container number and seal number the same? #

No. One identifies the equipment; the other identifies the fitted seal. Keep their pairing clear in the shipping records.

Does an intact seal prove every carton was loaded? #

No. Compare the loading record, package counts and goods received. A seal cannot establish the contents present before it was fitted.

Does a different seal prove the goods were stolen? #

No. Investigate the reason, timing and records of any replacement. An authorised inspection and an unexplained discrepancy require different follow-up.

Can I track the shipment using the seal reference? #

A mechanical seal identifier is not itself a tracking service. Use the reference requested by the carrier or forwarder for shipment updates.

Which type of seal should the supplier use? #

Confirm the booked carrier's requirements. For example, Hapag-Lloyd's published policy requires high-security seals meeting the applicable ISO 17712 standard for full containers under its bills of lading.

Do I need a container seal on a few 1688 cartons? #

Ask the consolidator about its container records. Your carton marks and consignment references remain important for identifying those packages through a shared shipment.

Does a correct seal mean Customs has released the container? #

No. A seal reference is not proof of Customs release or completed delivery formalities. Confirm the actual release position with the clearing team and relevant operator.

Keep container seal numbers with the loading photographs, shipping documents and any replacement records. That gives your team a clearer basis for investigating a mismatch when the goods arrive.
