Forklifts from China to Nigeria: Buying Guide
Buying forklifts from China to Nigeria? Compare diesel and electric trucks, load capacity, mast height, supplier checks, shipping and the full project budget.

Forklifts from China to Nigeria: Buying Guide
Buying forklifts from China to Nigeria starts with the work the truck must perform. The weight and dimensions of your loads, storage height, available space and working surface all affect the specification you should request.
A low price for a 3-tonne forklift does not establish that it can handle your particular loads at the required height. The quoted truck may also exclude the mast option, attachments, battery, charger or support arrangements your operation needs.
This guide focuses on buying new forklifts for Nigerian warehouses, factories and yards, including supplier checks, shipping and the complete project budget.
What should you tell the supplier before requesting a price? #
Prepare a work brief rather than asking for a general forklift catalogue. Include photographs and a measured site plan where possible.
Your brief should state:
- Typical and maximum load weights, including pallets or containers.
- Load dimensions, packaging and any unusual shape or overhang.
- Highest storage or placement position.
- Doorway heights, aisle widths and loading access.
- Floor or yard condition and whether work is indoors, outdoors or both.
- Expected daily use, shift pattern and available power or fuel arrangements.
Ask the supplier to recommend a truck category and explain its suitability. A counterbalance forklift, reach truck and specialised yard machine should not be treated as interchangeable because their catalogue capacities look similar.
Have a competent material-handling professional review the proposed truck against the actual site and tasks before ordering.
Does a 3-tonne forklift lift every 3-tonne load? #
No. The stated capacity applies under defined conditions. Toyota's residual capacity guide explains that lifting ability can change with lift height, load centre and attachments.
The load centre is the horizontal distance from the vertical fork face to the load's centre of gravity. Long or unusually shaped loads therefore need more information than their weight alone.
When comparing forklifts from China to Nigeria, request the manufacturer's capacity chart for the exact truck, mast, forks and attachments offered.
Have your technical adviser confirm the permitted load at the required height and load centre. Record those conditions in the quotation and purchase specification.
Use manufacturer-approved capacity information for the actual configuration. A model name, a seller's chat message or the largest number in a brochure cannot replace that information.
Which mast and clearance measurements matter? #
Ask for the exact mast model and its dimensions. Toyota's mast selection guidance highlights lift height, lowered height and free lift as separate considerations.
Your comparison should include:
- Maximum fork height and the required placement clearance.
- Lowered or collapsed mast height.
- Fully raised overall height.
- Free lift available before the mast extends.
- Overhead guard and load backrest dimensions.
- Required working aisle for your pallet and truck combination.
Free lift is especially relevant where the forks must rise within restricted overhead space. Confirm the actual specification rather than assuming that every mast described as two-stage or three-stage behaves identically.
Send the supplier your doorway, roof, racking and vehicle access measurements. Ask for written confirmation of suitability, supported by a qualified site assessment.
Should you choose diesel, LPG or electric? #
Compare the working environment, duty cycle, refuelling or charging arrangements, maintenance support and complete operating cost.
Electric forklifts avoid engine exhaust at the truck. Hyster offers electric models for indoor and outdoor applications, but the particular model still needs to suit your surface, weather exposure and other site conditions.
For an electric quotation, confirm:
- Battery chemistry, manufacturer, model and capacity.
- Whether the battery and compatible charger are included.
- Charger input requirements and charging arrangements.
- Runtime assumptions, including loads, travel and lifting activity.
- Battery warranty, local servicing and replacement availability.
For diesel or LPG, confirm the engine specification, fuel arrangements and local parts support. Have a competent safety professional assess exhaust and ventilation requirements for the intended workplace.
Ask for operating assumptions in writing. A promised full shift needs a defined workload and charging or refuelling plan.
What should you check about tyres, forks and attachments? #
Give the supplier clear details of your working surface, debris, outdoor routes and floor requirements. Obtain the approved tyre specification for the selected truck and application.
List fork dimensions, side shift, fork positioning, clamps, rotators or other attachments separately. Confirm the supplied configuration and its approved capacity information.
Toyota Material Handling explains that attachments affect load characteristics and that the manufacturer must update the data plate when required for a modified configuration.
Ask who supplies the attachment, who approves its integration and who supports it in Nigeria. An attachment's own rating does not establish the combined truck's capacity.
Record replacement part numbers and maintenance requirements. Check whether optional equipment changes the truck dimensions, visibility, service needs or shipping arrangement.
How do you verify a Chinese forklift supplier? #
Request the registered company name, business licence, factory address and exact manufacturer and model. Establish which company sells, exports, receives payment and provides warranty support.
Ask whether the truck is manufactured to order or supplied from stock. Obtain a specification sheet identifying the mast, power system, tyres, forks and accessories.
If the bank beneficiary differs from the contracting company, resolve and document the relationship before transferring funds. Use our guide to checking a Chinese supplier before payment to organise the checks.
Ask for serial-number-based parts support and manuals in English. Confirm prices and availability for routine service parts and important components relevant to the quoted truck.
Identify who will diagnose faults in Nigeria. Record warranty exclusions, response arrangements and responsibility for replacement shipping, labour and technician visits.
What should a pre-shipment forklift inspection prove? #
Agree an acceptance plan before paying the deposit. Have a competent forklift technician or inspection team assess the actual unit being shipped.
The inspection brief should include:
- Truck, mast, engine or battery identification and serial numbers.
- Agreement between the truck configuration, data plate and capacity documentation.
- Forks, carriage, mast, hydraulics, tyres and visible construction condition.
- Braking, steering, controls, warning devices and specified safety functions.
- A controlled performance trial under manufacturer-approved conditions.
- Battery and charger checks for an electric truck.
- Included accessories, tools, manuals, service parts and packing list.
Have the technician define the test method and suitable test conditions. Link photographs, reports and trial results to the actual unit and its serial number.
Specify correction, retesting and payment conditions if the truck fails acceptance. Our quality inspection in China guide helps turn these requirements into an inspection brief.
What should be ready in Nigeria before delivery? #
Arrange a site assessment before the forklift arrives. Confirm that floors, routes, loading areas and storage arrangements suit the truck and planned loads.
For electric trucks, have qualified professionals prepare the charging supply and battery facilities according to the manufacturer's requirements. For engine-powered trucks, resolve fuel storage, ventilation and maintenance arrangements.
Agree an unloading plan with the supplier, forwarder and receiving site. Specify responsibility for transport, lifting equipment, assembly and any reinstallation work after shipping.
Include commissioning, operator training, maintenance instruction and handover documents in the contract. Have a competent professional confirm readiness for use and the applicable workplace requirements.
Keep the truck's operating manual, capacity information and service records available to the people responsible for its operation and maintenance.
Which Nigerian import documents should you confirm? #
Before shipment, have your licensed customs agent confirm the exact equipment description, classification, valuation and required documents for the proposed forklift.
SON's import permit guidance explains that applications are evaluated using the importer, documentation and intended use. Confirm the correct certification or permit route for your shipment. Manufacturer status should not be treated as automatic approval.
SON's National Single Window notice sets out specified permit and certificate activation arrangements. Check the current filing workflow alongside our SONCAP requirements guide.
Ensure the invoice and packing list describe the actual truck and separately identify supplied accessories or spare equipment where appropriate.
This guide concerns new forklifts. If you are considering a used unit, obtain shipment-specific confirmation of import eligibility and documentation before paying, alongside an independent condition assessment.
How do you ship a forklift from China to Nigeria? #
Obtain the supplier's final packing plan before requesting freight quotations. Confirm dimensions, gross weights, disassembled items, lifting points and securing arrangements for every package.
Illustrative calculation for a fictional packing plan:
- Truck package: 3.1 × 1.2 × 2.2 metres = 8.184 CBM.
- Separate mast package: 2.6 × 0.9 × 0.8 metres = 1.872 CBM.
- Fork and accessory crate: 1.2 × 0.8 × 0.5 metres = 0.480 CBM.
- Subtotal: 10.536 CBM.
These invented dimensions do not describe a specific forklift or prove container suitability. The forwarder must assess package dimensions, weight distribution, loading access and securing requirements.
Tell the forwarder the exact fuel or battery configuration. For lithium batteries, request the relevant UN 38.3 test summary and safety data sheet. PHMSA explains the lithium battery test summary.
Have the carrier or qualified forwarder confirm classification, required documents and acceptance for the actual shipment. A battery document alone does not establish carrier approval.
Our cost per CBM from China to Nigeria guide explains what to check in a freight quotation.
What is the complete cost of importing a forklift? #
The cost of forklifts from China to Nigeria depends on the truck, mast, power system, attachments, shipping arrangement and Nigerian delivery scope. Compare quotations using the same configuration and commercial terms.
Fictional cash budget: these invented figures demonstrate cost categories, not current market prices or a supplier quotation.
- Truck and agreed equipment package: ₦12,000,000.
- China inland movement, export handling and inspection: ₦1,000,000.
- International freight and insurance: ₦2,000,000.
- Provisional duties, taxes, regulatory and destination charges: ₦3,600,000.
- Nigerian delivery, unloading and commissioning: ₦1,400,000.
- Initial service parts, contingency and operating reserve: ₦2,000,000.
- Total illustrative cash budget: ₦22,000,000.
Replace every allowance with dated quotations and a shipment-specific assessment. The provisional import charge is not a tariff rate. Identify excluded charging infrastructure, building work, extra batteries, attachments or training.
Use our landed cost from China to Nigeria guide to organise the import calculation.
Compare operating cost and service support as well as purchase price. Obtain equivalent local quotations so the import decision includes delivery time, warranty access and the cost of downtime.
What else do Nigerian buyers ask? #
Is a 3-tonne forklift suitable for my warehouse? #
Provide the load weights and dimensions, required placement heights and site measurements. Have a competent professional confirm the exact truck's capacity and suitability. The nominal rating alone cannot answer the question.
Can an electric forklift work outdoors? #
Some models are designed for outdoor use. Ask the manufacturer to confirm suitability for your surface, exposure, temperature and workload. Include charging arrangements and maintenance support in the assessment.
Can I change a lead-acid forklift to lithium? #
Obtain manufacturer approval for the proposed conversion. Confirm battery weight requirements, truck compatibility, controls, charger and updated documentation where necessary. Purchase a validated configuration rather than assuming that matching voltage is sufficient.
Can I order a higher mast later? #
Ask the manufacturer whether the exact truck supports the proposed mast and what approval, hydraulic, structural or capacity documentation changes would be required. Confirm cost and availability before relying on a future upgrade.
Does a forklift price include the battery and charger? #
Only if the quotation says so. Request the battery and charger models, specifications, warranties and quantities as separate line items. Include any spare battery or additional charging equipment explicitly.
Can I buy a forklift just to unload containers? #
Specify the containers, access, loads and intended handling tasks. Have a qualified professional assess doorway clearance, free lift, floor capacity and the complete loading arrangement before choosing the truck.
Should I compare buying with local hire? #
Yes, especially for occasional work. Compare availability, delivery, operator arrangements, maintenance responsibility and complete cost over your expected usage. Use equivalent load and site requirements when requesting offers.
