You can walk around Canton Fair without an interpreter.

Many export booths have somebody who can speak enough English to explain the product, give you an MOQ and quote a price. The Canton Fair app also supports supplier search, instant messaging and digital communication tools.

The difficulty starts when the conversation becomes commercial.

Why did the price change from ¥28 to ¥31?

Does the MOQ mean 500 individual pieces or 500 cartons?

Is the person speaking to you the factory or a trading company?

What exactly did the supplier say to their colleague after you mentioned your target price?

That is where a good Canton Fair interpreter becomes useful.

But the important question is not simply whether somebody speaks Chinese and English.

It is who they are working for.

How much does a Canton Fair interpreter cost in 2026? #

The Canton Fair has an official interpretation service inside the exhibition complex.

For the current service, the published rates are:

Less than four hours is charged as half a day. More than four hours is charged as a full day. Payment is made in RMB at Buyer Service Centres in Areas A, B, C and D.

The official service currently lists:

The Fair also warns that interpreter numbers are limited, so early reservation is sensible.

For the autumn Fair, the organiser accepts advance interpreter reservations from 30 September to 14 October, before the exhibition opens on 15 October.

Booth interpreter or exhibition escort? #

These are not quite the same service.

A booth interpreter is useful when you need interpretation around a specific discussion or booth.

An exhibition escort interpreter is more suitable when you want somebody walking the halls with you, moving from supplier to supplier and helping throughout the sourcing day.

For a Nigerian buyer attending to compare many factories, the escort arrangement will usually be closer to what people mean when they say, “I need an interpreter for Canton Fair.”

That is also why it costs more.

Can you bring your own interpreter? #

Yes, but do not assume that paying a private interpreter automatically gives them access to the exhibition halls.

The Fair controls credentials separately.

This became particularly important in 2026.

For the 139th Canton Fair, the organiser announced that Chinese accompanying personnel of overseas buyers would no longer use the old buyer-representative credential and would instead use a dedicated overseas buyer accompanying-person credential.

Older Canton Fair rules used charges such as RMB 300 per person per day plus a badge production fee for Chinese accompanying personnel, including interpreters, but those older rules should not be copied into a 140th Fair article as though nothing changed.

If you hire your own Guangzhou-based interpreter for the 140th Canton Fair, confirm two prices separately:

1. Their interpreting fee

and

2. Whatever current Canton Fair credential or access requirement applies to them

Do that before the first morning.

Never assume “interpreter fee includes Canton Fair entry” unless it is written into the agreement.

Whose side is your interpreter on? #

This matters more than whether their English sounds perfect.

Your interpreter will hear:

That gives them a powerful position in the transaction.

A properly independent interpreter should be working for you.

Be careful when an interpreter receives undisclosed commissions from suppliers or continually pushes you towards factories where they already have relationships.

That does not automatically mean the factory is bad.

It means you no longer know whether the recommendation is based on your interests or somebody else's commission.

What are the warning signs? #

Watch the behaviour rather than looking for one dramatic sign.

Be cautious if the interpreter:

One of the simplest protections is to say this before the Fair starts:

I am paying you for interpretation. Please do not accept commissions from suppliers without telling me.

Make the relationship clear.

What should a good Canton Fair interpreter actually do? #

A good interpreter does far more than translate “How much?”

They should help you ask precise questions quickly.

For example:

The interpreter should translate the supplier's answer—not replace it with what they think the supplier means.

That distinction is important.

Use numbers on your own phone #

Do not allow all pricing information to exist only inside a spoken Chinese conversation.

When the supplier quotes a price, type it into your phone.

For example:

Model X28

1,000 units — RMB 31

3,000 units — RMB 29

MOQ — 1,000

FOB Shenzhen

25 days

Then show it to the salesperson.

Now everybody can see what was agreed.

It reduces confusion between you, the salesperson and the interpreter.

It also makes comparing ten suppliers at the end of the day much easier.

Our first-time Canton Fair guide explains how to organise supplier notes during the exhibition.

Ask whether the company is really the factory #

A good interpreter can help here, but do not treat interpretation as supplier verification.

Ask the exhibitor:

Are you the manufacturer?

Then:

Where is your factory?

Then:

Can we visit it?

If the booth belongs to a trading company, that is not automatically a problem.

Trading companies can be useful.

The problem is paying factory-level money while incorrectly believing you are dealing directly with the manufacturer.

Take the Chinese company name, business card and booth details so you can verify them later.

Do not rely only on what somebody tells you verbally inside the hall.

Can the Canton Fair app replace an interpreter? #

For basic tasks, technology helps a lot.

The official Canton Fair app provides exhibitor and product search, itinerary planning, instant messaging, trade matching and electronic business-card exchange. Canton Fair materials also describe automatic translation within its messaging functions.

Translation apps are also useful for simple conversations.

But software becomes less reliable when the discussion involves:

Use technology for simple communication.

Use a person when misunderstanding the sentence could cost you money.

Do you need an interpreter for every day in China? #

Not necessarily.

The strongest use cases are usually:

Canton Fair days, when you need to move through many supplier conversations quickly.

Factory visits, where production, quality and technical questions become more detailed.

Serious negotiations, particularly before a large first order.

For normal transport, restaurants, hotels and simple shopping, many Nigerian visitors manage with translation apps and basic English.

Guangzhou also has a long history of trade with African buyers, so communication in some wholesale environments can be easier than a first-time visitor expects.

Spend interpreter money where misunderstanding carries financial consequences.

What about Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba or Nigerian Pidgin? #

The Canton Fair's current official interpreter-service list does not include Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba or Nigerian Pidgin.

English will normally be the bridge between a Nigerian buyer and a Chinese interpreter.

Arabic is officially available, which may also be useful to some northern Nigerian traders who are comfortable conducting business in Arabic.

The important thing is that the interpreter understands your English clearly.

An interpreter with technically strong English but who constantly misunderstands your phrasing can slow down every conversation.

Should a Kano buyer get an interpreter? #

If it is your first sourcing trip, it can be especially useful.

The Canton Fair moves quickly.

You may speak with 20 suppliers in a day, each discussing MOQ, specifications, production time, packaging and price.

The easier those conversations are, the more useful information you collect.

Our Canton Fair from Kano guide covers the rest of the journey.

Never let the interpreter control the supplier relationship #

This is one of the most important rules.

Get the supplier's:

Connect with the supplier directly.

Your interpreter can remain inside the conversation, but you should not be completely dependent on them to reach the factory.

If the interpreter disappears after the Fair, your supplier relationship should still exist.

After the exhibition, use our guide on what to do after Canton Fair before sending your first deposit.

How should you choose an interpreter? #

For a first trip, there are three sensible routes.

Use the Canton Fair's official interpretation service.

The price is published and the service is organised through the Fair.

Use somebody recommended by a buyer you trust.

Ideally, get a recommendation from somebody who has personally used the interpreter during sourcing—not somebody who merely has their WeChat number.

Arrange one through your sourcing or delegation team.

Ask clearly whether the interpreter receives commissions from suppliers.

Whatever route you choose, agree before the first day:

Get it in writing on WeChat or WhatsApp.

Booking through ChinaBridge Global #

ChinaBridge Global's October Canton Fair buyer delegation includes interpretation support during the Fair, with separate arrangements possible for one-to-one factory visits.

The important rule remains the same: the interpreter should be representing the buyer's interests, not quietly earning from the factory being recommended.

If you are travelling independently, send the ChinaBridge desk your Canton Fair phase, Guangzhou dates and product category before requesting an interpreter.

That tells us what type of interpreter you actually need.
